I have never used a light box but I do have a projector. With a projector I never have to print my photos. But I can see that a light box would be handy for some. Thank you Liz.
Well, Liz, once again, I have learned something SO helpful from you!! I saw the title of this and thought if you liked this brand, I would buy one (in a smaller size) as I haven't been happy with the one I have. When I try to trace a sketch I've downloaded or something I've traced from a book, I always have to go over the lines with pen to be able to see it clearly, even with the lightbox. And even then, I still miss some things. Imagine my surprise when I got to the part of the video where you crawled on the floor (HAHA!) to mimic a dark room! I turned off the lights and closed my blinds and - lo and behold, lots more details showed up! It NEVER occurred to me to do that - so thank you! I may want a bigger one eventually, but for now, I can keep using the one I have. (And I will be able to trace photos now!) Also, thank you for the "rant!" I'm glad you think that tracing is "okay" while learning to paint...I DON'T draw well or confidently. It's all I can do to learn the painting part! It was fun to get a glimpse of that side of your studio and your view, as well! (And I love that the "scrooge" side of you 😁came out and is going to use every little thing in that box!)
I had an old school light box I really use but it is much deeper and more awkward for the size of lighted area than this product. It really looks like they have improved the product greatly. Mine also has only one light level. Thank you for the demonstration.
Thank you so much, I wish I had this information before I bought my light pad, but it turned out fine. I use mine a lot doing holiday cards, especially if I am painting 15 or 20 cards! Who wants to draw all of those, boring. I learn so many great tips from you!
Oh wow a lightpad in those sizes A1, A2, & smaller is fascinating. I don’t have a lightpad of any kind at the moment but I have been interested in what kinds would be beneficial for artists. Mine just came in. I got the A3. Can’t wait to try it out. I did test it with my 140 lb watercolor paper and it looks very usable. I will be using it for my own work and the grands will get to play…with supervision.!
Actually I tried it in various light situations. The best was my one window dining room with lights off. It was in afternoon and the sun was not hitting that window, so it wa dim…but at least I didn’t have to crawl under the table!@@LizChadertonArt

it sounds like one will really help. but I am going to also suggest ‘Drawing on the right side of the brain’ or a Jake Spicer book. Anyone can learn to draw, I promise you!
I have a light box which I use for a sketch, especially as I’m trying to move towards watercolour portraits, and for embroidery transfers. My granddaughter likes the bead painting so this might be a good Christmas gift! Thanks Liz. I’m also going to request that my local library start stocking your art books.

I am currently looking at the A3 model you used for comparison (Toheto, I think) as it has a pretty good lux level, the non rechargeable is 8000 lux as well as the3 color temperature levels ( the rechargeable is 6000 lux). However, I am now going to go take a look at this Artdot light pad after your excellent review of it. I think your studio is awesome and like you, I never throw any of those extra bits out either! You never know when they’ll come in handy. All the best.
hope you come to a good conclusion. A light pad is a very handy thing to have. My favourite is a rechargeable one, as I can never find the correct cable in a hurry!
@@LizChadertonArt Yes, I’ve come to the conclusion that I should get a light pad because I end up with too many erasures on my watercolor paper. I’ve emailed Artdot for the specifications and told them I am interested after watching your review.
Interesting. You’ve reminded me of the A3 one I have in my art room stash somewhere! 😊 Those small plastic containers can also be used to put sharpenings of Neocolor 2’s to use with water as watercolour paint. 🙂

i use a light box to transfer my final sketch to whatever paper I am going to use. If I were to sketch directly on my watercolor paper, I would end up erasing all the good paper bits away! lol
I love my wee lightbox! It's an A4 lightbox/pad, but it's so useful. I use it for quick tracing for portraits, mostly. I find I struggle with sketching even more than usual when the need to be accurate is essential!

I found the instructions to be odd, it says the light pad remembers your lighting setting but it dosent I can’t seem to get that to work, did u have this issue

ooh, I had not considered that aspect of my speech before. I usually try to refer to North America, because a lot of Canadians get upset about being overlooked, but had not thought through the impact on Latin Americans. So what is the best way of referencing and distinguishing? North American and Latin American? or is North, South and Central American better? Any guidance would be appreciated. I have been lucky enough to visit both Central and South America, but my Spanish is very rusty, so hopefully translate will do the work!

A projector has the huge advantage of changing the size. What sort do you use?

I use it mainly for my portraits and I can get my sketch to any size I want to work on.

yes LED lights have revolutionised light boxes. They used to be huge!

I find them super handy. They are no substitute for drawing but a really good time saver 😊

The secret is to use it in a dim room!

I had to turn it around (top to bottom) as I’m right handed and slightly brushing the on off button would alter or turn off the light.

Yes, I know a lot of people draft their composition and then transfer to not damage the paper. It’s a great idea.

if you don’t want to damage the book and you are not happy drawing freehand, good old tracing paper would be the way to go I reckon

I always have it on brightest so no issue, so it’s probably best to contact the manufacturer
