  • This study was composed already in 1623 by Italian chess pioneer Gioachino Greco.
White has a tactic variation to save the draw here. Can you solve it?

If one knows the rule of the "wrong color bishop" the solution comes relatively easily.

I'll admit to being baffled at first, but once he gave the first move, the solution very quickly dawned on me. Of course , it should have earlier, but I kept looking for some kind of tactical trick with the rooks on, etc.
VERY nice example of that nice drawing resource. I just love to get extra half points in games from knowing about the endgame. Unfortunately, the REST of my game is very "meh"... I just like to study the endgame because of the purity of it. You either know what you're doing or not. You can't sidetrack the issue (for long) with distracting tactics.

Yes, I saw the solution immediatly. I saw the diagram and I knew on the spot all. The move Ba6 is not new. There exist a famous game played by Grandmaster Shirov with Black. He played the famous move with Black ...Bh3!!

Shirov was clearly inspired by this study which would have been part of his training.

The chess program tells you the best move of the position, but would it be possible to find a program that tells you the best move that was the previous move. That is, analyze the position backwards. However, the captures is difficult to program.
I thinking, what was black last move?

Black has moved Kxb8 because White has moved Rh8xb8+ before, because Black has moved N(d7)b8 because White has moved R(h7)h8+ before. Is it enough for you, or have I go backwards to the beginning of the game?
