- I picked up the PlayStation Portal this week as I've been doing a lot more gaming on the go recently but one thing that I haven't really been able to do is play my PS5 games away from my setup.
Here is my full review after a few days of using it!

Told myself i would buy it if i saw it in the store. I saw it but my wife was with me.
I feel your pain brotha 😂
Time to let the wife go. Priorities
Oh man 😂😂😂😂
I told my wife we needed this to have a healthier relationship😂
😂😂😂😂
This is a god send for someone who is disabled like me. My cervical spinal injuries only allow me to play in a chair for so long until I have to lay down. I'm definitely buying this.
Strongly agree with you on this one..I have cervical and thoracic syrinx and chiari malformation which is debilitating so having this will allow me to play while resting in bed. Just ordered one. Excited for it
I have my TV at the end of my bed 🛏️ 📺 so I can lay down, using a bigger pillow and play my games comfortably that way.
I'd love to get a PlayStation Portal, but I feel it'll be a waste since I have no kids, my TV is set up right at the end of the bed, etc...but I understand the PlayStation Portal has its uses such as your guy's situation.
Hopefully in the future, Sony makes a PlayStation Handheld similar to the PSP.
The portal proves 100% that Sony needs to make a new standalone handheld device. A vita 2 as it were. I think the market is now ready for it
The market is definitely ready for one, with all these companies coming out with handhelds from steam, asus, Lenovo and Logitech to name a few Sony could definitely capitalise on the handheld trend and dominate the market. If done correctly and by correctly I mean make a ps vita 2 that allows physical games it would sell incredibly well. The technology is there the exclusive games are there if anything they would be losing money not making one.
Sony won’t make a dedicated handheld seeing the success of the Portal they will make another streaming only device just watch.
@@ryans413 that wouldn’t make any sense at all why would they make a second device that does exactly the same thing as the first? It’s streaming the only upgrade they can make to this joke of a device is to add an oled screen and they might but nobody is going to buy it. It’s a lot more likely they are working on a psp/vita successor on the level of a steam deck or ASUS rog ally
@@TigerSuit24 everyone said no one would but the Portal and it sold out.
@@ryans413 yes....that is exactly what I would expect. And its the most logical choice. Because people want a portable device that is totally integrated with their console if not a hybrid system ala the Switch. If you are holding out for a portable device with a new physical media platform then you are only setting yourself up for disapointment. The only way to integrate a handheld device with a console is through streaming. Especially if you want said device to run the same games. With cloud streaming the console does the heavy lifting freeing the portable device to run the games. Just look at how under powered the Switch is and how it can barely run many games because of its limitations. Thats not what Playstation owners want. They clearly want a way to play the console games on the go, and the Portal proves that.
Sony knocked the build design out of the park. If they make a stand-alone that look exactly like this, even if it's a little thicker, everyone will buy it.
They definitely need a PSP follow up with a design based on this
Its way better now with the wifi update. It worked flawlessly for me out of town in a hotel. No connection issues....super dope experience for me.
That’s the one thing I’ve not tested yet but I’m hearing that it can be hit and miss still
so you can be out away from the house and it works on any wifi connection?
@davidatkinson6267 yes
I just got the portal and i experience no lag im amazed
how did you connect to a hotel
I love this thing ever since i bought it. Ppl was trashing it until they actually hold and play it 😎
Facts bro!! The portal is dope! Glad I picked one up.
Bro do you get any input lag or delays?
@abidhussan5604 I se to, depends on your internet on the portal (like if your away from home)
But your best bet is to have your PS5 connected to an ethernet cable. So that way your not pulling from your home wifi to stream to another. It'll be a stronger stable direct connection to your ps5 to give your portal a stable connection as well, just make sure your on a good wifi connection too.
@@rikko47 see if you’re home with like a 120mbs average download and like 26 upload, would that be good?
@abidhussan5604 if your at home, trust me that's more than enough
Just bought it last week after holding out and it’s dope. Ratchet and Clank is one the best games on the ps portal seriously 🔥
Spud videos are like ASMR without trying to be, hes a good vibe.
My nugga
Thank you very much 😁
@SpuddGaming ya bro thanks for the great content, keep it up!
Gonna be buying this myself within the next few weeks. Excited to have this option when the wife wants to watch TV in the living room or I'm away from my house
In regards to feel: it’s weighted perfectly, and as a bigger person with bigger hands than normal, it actually feels better than the regular controller, having my hands separated more is just so much more comfortable and I never thought it would be
Your setup is awesome, I think I will get a PlayStation Portal soon when it's in stock near me ^^
Thanks for your beautiful vidios!
💜
Finally bought one yesterday. It’s seriously amazing- and it’s being nit picked way too much. It works great and the screen is beautiful. Zero regrets.
It’s mostly nit picked by people who don’t play PlayStation very much or have poor internet and connectivity issues, or aren’t willing to pay £200 to play only PS games
@@SpuddGamingPSVR2 having same problems from crazy xbox fans with dedicated ps hate channels. So many of them on YT smh.
Facts
Do you have to let your ps on restmod to play on it
@@wy_tryyup all it can do is remote play . Nothing more . Ur phone can do exactly the same thang except ur phone doesn’t have the nice controls
was goin buy just for the media, can't believe not a feature, thanks for video
That room is super clean, nice setup
I bought it two months ago, im still realy happy i did i play more on the couch than behind my ps5 and it’s relaxing!!
I just bought one of these myself after trading in a bunch of old stuff after being skeptical about it since release and I’m genuinely kicking myself for not getting one sooner. Absolutely gorgeous and so seamless with the connection to my main console.
I think my only complaint is the thick bezels. If they made a Portal 2, that’s what I’d want them to work on to give us more screen real estate.
Love the portal. The most underrated device ever. The comfort of the controller is amazing
Good videos.. cool set up..
Thank you 😁
Really good review! Can you livestream from it?
This dude really said I have 2 ps5’s and has duplicate handheld systems and a full blown pc he’s definitely not married with no kids
Sometimes my portal sucks and sometimes it’s smooth. When it’s good i actually refer it on the portal, when it sucks, I wish I returned it haha just depends on the day.
Bought it at launch and have absolutely love it. ☝🏻
All the way from Malaysia here 🇲🇾!!
Been playing my PlayStation with the ps portal for some months now and since the newest update I have been really enjoying playing with the ps portal and I think Sony should add in a feature for having split screen such as playing It Takes Two with my girlfriend and we found out that it would be absolutely amazing if we could have portal to split screen player 2 on the portal with full size gameplay since we don’t really have 2 different PlayStation or tv to separate the screen.. just sharing my thoughts
The PS portal plays excellent, I play this now more than the PS5 on the big screen truly a fantastic handheld addition
I was about to sell mine, but the updates changed my mind!!!
as a over the road driver this looks so good for me
I was debating between getting one of these and just getting a Backbone controller. The about using a Backbone w/ Remote Play is that it still doesn't work unless you're on the same network as you're console. I'll prob pick one up next week 😄
great video,
Thank you 😁
I would like to know how will it work for example when you are at a hotel on vacation. Can you remotely boot up your PS5 and play it? How good does the connection have to be?
Yes you can power on your console from the portal as long as it is in rest mode and you have gone into the “power saving” settings on your PS5 and enabled “enable turning on PS5 from network”. You can then activate your PS5 from the portal no matter where you are. You can connect to public WiFi like in a hotel now as this was added in the latest software update
I’ve used mine on my phones hotspot on numerous road trips and it always works great, there’s a little lagging if my phone service drops. In terms of Wi-Fi it usually works perfectly with 2/3 bars of WiFi, 1/3 is when I start to notice some lagging
I would've paid an extra $50-$100 if they had an OLED option.
Why then the portal would cost more the 1080p LED screen is fine.
Steamdeck does it just fine with native controls. Just tested it today.
Do you think a 350ish MB speed would be on par with your latency? Seems to be doing quite well for you
I think the portal is worth the price, btw nice review Spudd 🔥
😂 just for remote play device $200 worth??
Yeah tbh. It is so convenient, and easy to use when the tv is occupied @kapilbwin6090
@@kapilbwin6090 dude theres pro controllers that cost that, its a normal price for a device like that, if you think its expensive dont buy it 😂
Yes steam deck can do more, but it’s double the price so you would expect it to. So many people say “X device is better” and to that I say, well you’re paying more so I should hope it is or you’re wasting your money 😅
@@SpuddGaming true 😅
ok so i will say this.. it worked flawlessly when i first got it no issues what so ever.. but after they did this recent update i noticed some connection issues. I never had an issue playing anywhere in my house until now.. hope they fix it with next update
Dude me to, I got mine pre ordered at launch and it always worked bad ass no issues, but now for some reason I’ve noticed the quality of the games have gone down since the last update. Have no idea why
@@Jus_dope95have you tried remove the wifi network and then connect to it again? Sorts out several problems with both my iPad Air and Samsung S22 Ultra.
I do have a hidden network, but these two devices are the only ones acting up from time to time.
i was so skeptical about this thing but i caved and got one. and i promise u i cant get out of bed to game anymore lmaoo i love this thing. its not the old psp no but we have those. give this thing a chance if u own a ps5 deffff look into these. theyre awesome!!! i can also leave my ps5 on rest mode and go to work and play on this thing! perfect for ps5 players!
it works wayyyyyy better & smoother when the ps5 is connected to a lan cable rather than it being on wifi... u can't play music from the app that sucks too.. hopefully they make a patch update..if they make a disc version id definitely buy it i don't like being limited to features
My PS5 is wireless and works just fine for me it’s peoples wifi coverage in there homes it’s probably awful.
Would you recommend buying a 2 year warranty?
I’m pretty okay with taking care of devices but wondering what others recommend?
I'm curious how long are the furniture risers you use.
Hopefully in the future, Sony makes a PlayStation Handheld similar to the PSP.
Nice video as always my guy 🫡
Thanks my dude 😁
I love mine it’s my go to handheld I play this more than my legion go and my Rog ally
I use PS Remote Play on my iPad and bring a controller with me, and it’s actually awesome
So can you play on this at work on your break as long as you have your ps5 on at home and have a hotspot from your phone?
2:37 If it links to the PS5 via wifi, that solves the issue of the Bluetooth on the PS5 going bad, of which the BT on the PS4 is now going bad for various PS4 users. I ended up just going with a wired PS4 compatible controller to keep using my PS4.
I kinda want one since closest to a Modern PSP, but ever since announced I’ve been 50/50 because remote play and I have bad internet
I never understood the dislike of the portal, it's a fantastic bit of tech, I've played in pubs before the public WiFi was added, I just connected my phone to the WiFi and used it as a hotspot, it was a complete none issue. Mine is used all the time as I'm at my in-laws a lot and my kids play it, it's awesome
It was just those people that wanted a dedicated handheld that hated this thing. Same idiots that said just youse your phone with the backbone.
I’ve had mine for a little over a week, and for me personally it’s been a fantastic edition to my gaming life. I’m only a casual gamer that plays PlayStation so for this at only £200 to basically take and use my PS5 anywhere and everywhere has been well worth the investment. It’s not going to be for everyone but pure convenience and freedom, topped with the quality of the controller itself it’s a great bit of gadget kit.
Got one, it’s great but it would’ve been perfect if it was OLED
I know most people don't understand what Remote Play actually is. But everything you said, I agree with I've had my PlayStation portal for a while. And honestly, I love it. I do understand that. They should have gone with Bluetooth, but they did say Bluetooth offers latency, which I'm good because I have their pulse Elite and they connect fairly easy, and I've enjoyed my sessions in helldivers great video and review
Why is everyone tripping over the Bluetooth the built in speakers sound fine.
@ryans413 They do I have played world of tanks using the speakers and they sound fine, only use a pulse elite Because I play games that require to speak to people, and there's nothing like having a microphone close to your mouth, but still you're right. The Built in speakers sound good
@@ryans413my only issue is the Bluetooth, if I'm in public somewhere with this thing I don't wanna be the asshole with this thing being loud, other then that it's probably going to have me playing my PS5 more now
@@holamix true good point
@@holamixjust get a €5 usb-c to 3.5mm adapter 👍🏻
Amazing product but they gotta give us Bluetooth for more choice of wireless headphones
So basically like a remote control...
It's definitely defeats a feature of handheld purpose, being a stand alone console...
Super-psyched!! Just used a Verizon welcome voucher to get one for freeeeee 🤩
What the hell is airplane mode used for if this only uses WiFi and you would most likely have the device turned off or on anyway?
I was thinking the same
After the latest update this morning, I can finally play it lying down on my bed, 20 meters from the PS5, across two bedrooms and a family room, playing GTA5 without pulling my hair. Usually? HORRIBLE!
Sold mine yesterday. Too many disconnection issues outside of the home. Ended up being a paper weight
Not a bad device if you own PS5 think it as expensive controller with screen, btw the price comparison with handheld pc is totally wrong because you forget to include the PS5 console itself unless you want pretty expensive paper weight 😅
Can you use the mic, for example for game chats. For example with switch lite you can’t chat to friends as there’s no mic support
@@callumhollamby2189 yes the mic is available with the portal just as it is with the actual controller
Yes it works just the same as on the PS5 controller
Yes
Might be a silly question, but can this be used as an additional controller when gaming locally with a family member or friend?
I believe it mirrors gameplay to your ps5, so i doubt it
do i have to be near my ps5 if i want to connect my pulse headset to the portal?
Question, I have a portable hotspot and haven’t used it to its fullest yet. I was on a fire crew and one fire we went too was on top of a mountain. We had downtime and when I tried connecting to my phone it didn’t work. Now let’s say I take the portal and that happens again, will i be able to atleast log into the portal and play or neither?
You should be able to connect to it via hotspot if the connection is good enough, it’s not as reliable as home WiFi but it should still work yes
Hey, brother would you recommend it for someone who would use it for some online multiplayer use ? Like like fifa 1v1 multiplayer or some gran turismo online races ?
Due the streaming nature of PS Portal / Remote Play, I don't think you'll be happy in 1v1 games. There's a bit delay that's works fine with single player games, but will be a problem in more in competitive ones.
It works with online games but it’s not as good if you don’t like the small input lag it’s better to use for offline games
My problem with this is what is the support for it going to be like in the long term? Since with the psp and vita they could last forever since games were physical but for this where will it be in 10 years time
Started using mine again
if the portal like the switch it would be better?
I wanted to love it but there were a few things holding it back for me.
1. No Bluetooth. This is crazy to me that the only thing you can do is connect their proprietary devices to the Portal.
2. The infamous stutter…
3. No HDMI support.
The Bluetooth is a big drawback for sure, I want to use my wireless headset with it but can’t and that sucks. I’ve only had a stutter issue once when my internet dropped out but 99.9% of the time it’s been fine. Curious as to what you want the HDMI for on a device of this type though
Bluetooth is not really that big of an issue. The stutter is probably your own internet setup not the portals and why do you need an hdmi connection for.
@@SpuddGaming HDMI would be huge if you are a big traveler like I am, If I wanted to play it as a controller and have it up on my hotel room tv would be awesome.
My only gripe is the thumbsticks. They're too small. Hopefully, the covers fix the issuenthough
Not that’s small the Vitas are smaller.
If you use chiaki you can use the gamepad on these devices
What happens when you get stick drift on it? How do you replace the sticks?
On the go? Can you take it outside?
I really only want one to play college football 25 on
I Ponder the Portal via future updates or its finally form might be like but don't even own it.
the issue I have with this is longevity, this will only last with the current ps5 console and maybe ps5 pro if that comes out. where the ally or other pc gaming may last longer cause they are standalone.
Imagine going to 2005 and telling a console player that this is the console
you can use ps remote on any handheld , for people that dont wont to buy this....psplay for android or chiaki and chiaki for windows or even the latest psplay for windows... you can use any bluetooth controller or your device controls (rog ally/steam deck/legion go etc)
Still wish it was cheaper as its not worth the price but maybe if it goes on sale I might consider getting one.. Living in Canada 🇨🇦 so everything is too costly 😂
I was able to play Playstation remote play with my Logitech I believe after purchasing the $5 one time charge PS remote play app from the android store. Anyone else do similar?
Yes PS Play, that’s a work around if you want to do it that way, I did that when I was testing the original Ally last year, I did search for it when I was testing the Ally X but I couldn’t find it so I wonder if it’s been taken off the store, or had been temporarily maybe
I've been doing that on my steam deck for a long time and it works perfectly
Steam Deck is one of the very few devices the remote play app works properly on
Are you telling me i can connect wireless earbuds (sony wf1000xm5)to this PSP?because I’ve been reading everywhere that you need an adapter
Can u play online games on this? Will it lag?
Can you play any game on it?
I don’t understand how in2024 back buttons are only reserved for “elite” controllers. It should’ve standard by now, big miss
It's awesome right you know I was thinking about getting games for the Nintendo switch but this is more better like I play Spyro old game on the switch and I played on the PS5 but I think this is way better than that so I think I'll be buying it I love to play games I'm a gamer and I'm more professional with games so yeah I'm so going to get this I know we're not supposed to trust technology but something like this I want Yes
Yeah I get 10MBs on a sunny day. Rural life is hard.
Damn, that’s a struggle
I live in countryside and ended up getting Starlink getting around 350mb download and 28mb upload and portal seems to work good😊
@@waifuowner911 I live in a holler between two mountains. Satellites don’t work here. I’m lucky there’s even one internet provider at all in this area, and that it stretched its DSL out this far. If I could get Starlink I definitely would.

WE MAKING NINTENDO JEALOUS WITH THIS ONE🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥
do we know how many milliseconds of input delay we have in an optimal network setting (like a
About 2 not much
I secretly want a steam dech but i dont have a PC
Don’t need a PC the Steam Deck is a PC
Need to on the ps5 to login the portal or not?
can u leave the portal on the desk..use a ps5 controller to play with it?
like the switch?
I’ve not tried that but I don’t think so, it would be entirely pointless in this case. The switch is a console in its own right so you can play on TV or handheld. The portal is purely for remote playing your existing PS5 away from your setup so there would be no purpose in leaving it on the desk to play with a controller
No
We need a PC Portal.
So my question is do you have to be near your ps5 in order to play the games on wifi? I can’t be like playing games on wifi at the barbershop or something while my ps5 is at home?
You can play on any WiFi anywhere, you don’t need to be next to your console
@@SpuddGaming sold!
Not gonna lie, I had issues trying to do remote play from my phone away from my home to others wifi, and the lag input is ridiculous. Don't know what to do
He said he has 2 playstations.
Damn bro i dont even have one
can a 40Mbps (Megabit per sec) works seamlessly? or there one or two lag input? I planned to buy this
40mb is plenty Portal only needs 15mb to work. Your good.
it's only smooth if you internet is fast and stable, most countries don't have such a good connection
Not fast just stable
I thought you could play ps5 games directly with the controls on the steam deck and rog ally? I’ve seen videos of it. Are they not real? I’ve been planning on buying one and it was definitely a selling point.
Steam Deck I’m not sure, I’ve never used one. ROG Ally does not support remote play without a controller, nor does the MSI Claw or Logitech G Cloud. You can play some games using the PlayStation Plus app which is cloud gaming and that works with the onboard controls just fine, but it’s limited titles and you need the correct PS Plus subscription tier
I got mine two days ago
And ?
You have to make sure your PS5 is plugged into your LAN Ethernet. I haven’t had an issue with connection. Went to Kansas for my son’s college graduation and used the hotel WiFi. I had no issues. PS5 was in Cali.
You don’t at all, I’ve been using mine purely on WiFi and it’s been fine
No my PS5 is wireless and the Portal works just fine.
So let me get this straight can I only play on this with a ps5 close by or can I leave the ps5 at home and go play this at the other end of town and just connect to a random hotspot? I don’t understand the logic of it if you need a ps5 nearby to be able to play a portable device lol
It works off an Internet connection both the PS5 and Portal connect to your PSN account that’s how the Portal can access your PS5 and the PS5 can share the screen to the portal. So really the screen game and control inputs are all being streamed over the internet back to the PS5 and the PS5 dose the same to the Portal. Yes you can go to a public building access it’s wifi and play your games from the PS5.
What’s the meaning to have the aeroplane mode in a device that need always to be connected online?
You activate aero mode and got disconnected lol
No idea lol
