    I feel it necessary to point out that Paul was shooting a 12”ish target at 200 yards with a 10.5” AR USING IRON SIGHTS WITH SIGNIFICANT WIND! What a boss.

      Farley Moab the point is that there’s a fat chance that any average amateur gun enthusiast can pull off shots like that. No one is comparing Paul Harrell, who is a renowned competition shooter, to possibly the best competition shooter today Jerry Miculek.

      No wind w/the 1st round with the 10.5 and wind at his back on the 2nd round with the both the 10.5 and 20... good shooting, of course but not all that difficult. Pre-ACOG days in the Army, that’s what we were trained to do. I’ve recently have learned that so many guys have never used irons. They get flattop ARs and put optics on them. Some will pick up a cheap set of BUIS later, but never even sight em in! I was recently looking into getting a new set for a build I was doing. 10 out of 11 guys I asked about their BUIS and how do they like them, didn’t know because they have never used them! Not even to sight in. 8 of those guys didn’t even know how to sight em in. So I guess when they see me hitting 200, 250 and 300 yds using my irons, they prob think I’m an amazing shooter. When I’d only consider myself maybe a little above average, among iron sight guys. Those 10 guys? I’m leagues above.

      Aikibiker1 ammo selection is important. This would have been very different if M855 had been used. The 77gr load is not too dissimilar from Mk 262 which had gained a reputation for both the long range accuracy from a long barrel and close to midrange terminal effect with short barrels.

      @Darren4352 Před 4 lety +17

      @@509Gman I would beg to differ. At the relatively short range of 200 yd I don't think you're going to see truly different effectiveness. If we we're looking at 500 to 600 yards then I believe we'd see some significant differences in terminal performance but relatively speaking 200 yards is still close range. An additional factor would be there is no need to penetrate any sort of armor.

    There is no substitute for data gathered under real-world conditions. When such data isn't practical or moral (it's not ethical to dose your friends with meth, get them excited and then shoot them at various ranges before cutting them apart to see what the bullets did) simulations approximating reality are as good as it gets. Terminal ballistics testing has to be conducted with simulations--whether water jugs or something deemed more "scientific." Test media isn't free and there's the time to set up the test and then interpret the results.
    Your testing is a public service. Thank you.

    • @maximilianmustermann5763
      @maximilianmustermann5763 Před 4 lety

      @@Dang_Near_Fed_Up CZcams already does loudness equalization, which means that every video above 14 LUFS gets turned down to that level. This is a lossless process and doesn't change the sound quality, it just equalizes for perceived loudness.
      However they can't and shouldn't do any more than that because it would mess with well recorded and mastered videos.
      There are millions of professional music videos and other well mastered videos on the platform that would suffer massively from any kind of auto-equalization or compression, they simply cannot do that.
      I watch a lot of videos with more amateurish sound recording/mastering, too, so I usually use Equalizer APO in combination with Windows' built-in Loudness Equalization on the shortest setting. It is basically an auto-gain, auto-compressor/limiter. This is a rather aggressive setting that fixes most problems in amateur sound recording/mixing, but I wouldn't want to listen to music with this, it sounds horrible on professional recordings.

    • @maximilianmustermann5763
      @maximilianmustermann5763 Před 4 lety

      What I'm trying to say is: CZcams as a platform cannot do anything about bad sound recording/mixing/mastering. It's just up to the creators to get some good sound in their videos. It's not rocket science, everyone can learn enough about it to make at least a half-decent sound track. Unfortunately most people don't realize that bad sound is way more distracting and annoying than some shaky footage or a lower resolution picture.

One here, is that all the velocities were chronographed at the same relatively short distance, not truly muzzle velocity, but close enough. As expected, velocities were lower from the 10.5" barrel, but most of us would choose that short barrel for CQB, not because of best performance, but for compactness and manuverability. At 200 yards, the 20" barrel velocity will be close to Paul's 10.5" barrel velocities at the shorter range. Here are my personal takeaways:
    - While I won’t go below a 1:8 twist, 16 inch barrel for 5.56/.223, I was impressed by the 10.5 inch barrel at 200 yards (more effective than I thought it would be, although obviously less so than the twenty inch barrel).
    - The 77 grain Remington just was added to the top of my “buy some” list.
    I’d also like to add one comment that may be of value to some of your viewers. Months ago, Chis Baker of Lucky Gunner produced a CZcams where he interviewed two really knowledgeable Federal Ammunition professionals (and I’d emphasize that both these fellows were not “marketing types,” rather they were the engineers and the testers who make design decisions and trade offs including projectile composition and shape, muzzle velocity from likely weapons, and so forth . . . really first rate people). Okay, they unambiguously stated that hydrostatic shock is unlikely to occur with velocities below 2100 FPS. So, I’d presume the 77 grain meat targets results (citrus lung tissue especially) might reflect that.
    Again, thinks - this was one of your very best (imho).

    @gordonsbuck Před 4 lety

    The engineer/mathematician in me was so intrigued by your velocity tests of 7/24/2020 that I had to try to correlate velocity to barrel length.
    The simplest correlation is to assume a velocity loss of 50 fps for each inch that the barrel is shortened. For example, in the first test, the average velocity was 3194 fps for the 20 inch barrel. For the second test, the same ammo produced an average velocity of 2762 fps from the 10.5 inch barrel. That is a loss of 45.5 fps per inch of reduced barrel length. I rounded this off to an even 50 fps and found that the velocities from the 10.5 inch barrel could be predicted from the 20 inch barrel velocity within a few percentage points. (The actual velocity losses varied from 41.0 to 61.4 fps per inch.)
    I did research and found references to equations from Homer Powley. These were somewhat complex as the equations use velocity to the fourth power.
    Not as simple as velocity loss per inch but more satisfying to me was to consider the ratio of the barrel lengths to the ¼ power. (The ¼ power of a number can be taken quickly by taking the square root twice.) The ratio of the 10.5 inch barrel to the 20 inch barrel is 0.525. Taking 0.525 to the ¼ power yields 0.851 (square root of 0.525 is 0.725 and the square root of 0.725 is 0.851). Using this method, the velocity from the 10.5 inch barrel is 0.851 times the velocity from the 20 inch barrel for the same cartridge. This method also predicted velocities within a few percentage points of accuracy.
    The most accurate method that I found was to use the “bullet travel length” of the barrel instead of the overall length. The case of the ammo you used is about 1.76 inch long and the bullet about 0.5 inch long. Therefore the bullet travel length for the 20 inch barrel is 20-1.76+0.5 = 18.74 inch; for the 10.5 inch barrel, the bullet travel length is 10.5-1.76+0.5=9.24 inch. The bullet travel length ratio is then (9.24/18.74)=0.493 and 0.493 to the ¼ power is 0.837. Using this method, the velocity from the 10.5 inch barrel is 0.837 times the velocity from the 20 inch barrel for the same cartridge.
    Your velocity tests of 6/18/2020 using 20, 16 and 10.5 inch barrels also match very well with these correlations.
    Although you, doubtless, did not intend a mathematical approach to the velocity from a shortened barrel, I’m very pleased to have found one that is, in fact, relatively simple.

    Great info as always. The 77 gr Rem ammo was impressive, especially in the 20' barrel. Those holes in the rear ribs were something. Guess i will have to try some in my 16" and/or my bolt action. I bet they would be great on coyotes. So would the Federal 50 gr. Great call on showing the velocity diff with 38 Spl and 38 Super. Exact right loads to choose. Was just shooting that 38 Spl the other day- common practice ammo for me. Far as i know, it is the old USAF service load, rated at 800 fps from a 4" barrel.

    One additional piece of info from my experience. I shot 45 grain winchesters, cant remember bullet type, out of a 24" and the bullets were exiting and spinning fast enough to explode half of the time just a few feet out of the barrel. video showed a puff of dark cloud appear about 2 feet from muzzle.

    This is a great tutorial on the 10.5 inch barrel. Here are short barrel take aways:
    Use 5.56 ammunition, not .223 commercial ammunition to get full performance.
    Use 55 grain ammunition to assure maximum velocity potential .
    Do not be distracted by velocity loss. 2700 feet per second is ample performance for most applications.
    With respect to the rifle, the short barrel is a very productive feature for defensive use. It is very difficult to keep a full size battle rifle with you as a defensive tool. A SBR/AR - braced pistol is far easier to keep available and bring to bear in a fight.
    How do I know this? I had to engage professionally from a vehicle. Those with M-16s were unable to bring rifles into the fight due to weapon length in a confined space. My CAR-15 deployed perfectly.
    I keep a CAR-15 clone with a green dot as a truck gun without apology, regret or concern about its inadequacies. From very close to 100 yards I have zero concerns.

    I would enjoy seeing a comparison of 6.5 Grendel in the AR platform, different barrel lengths, as many are considering the 6.5 Grendel to be "the optimal AR cartridge" for several reasons. I understand one of the reasons is that it burns more powder very quickly, giving it a muzzle velocity far from a "standard 16 inch" AR barrel, VS longer right barrels.
