    Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (stylized as D00M3 RESURRECTI⊕N ⊕F EVIL) is a first-person shooter video game developed by Nerve Software. It was released for Microsoft Windows on April 3, 2005, as an expansion pack and sequel to Doom 3 and on October 5, 2005, for the Xbox video game console. The Xbox version does not require the original Doom 3 in order to play, and includes the original Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, and Master Levels for Doom II.
    The video game features eight multiplayer game modes. Resurrection of Evil features twelve new single player levels, six new enemies including the hunter, four new multiplayer maps as well as new weapons such as the double-barreled shotgun originating from Doom II.

    Yea, back in the day DLC wasn't planned until the game was out. Now they cut the game in half and resell it to you.

      +Tool0GT92 Sometimes it was, but the games were at least complete. For example in the design document for Diablo, they say that they plan to make an expansion pack for the game, but again, the game was actually complete.

      +Tool0GT92 Pretty much this. And now DLCs are already planned in advance without waiting until the fan reception is in.
      DLCs should be extra content on a game, not the stuff that wasn't finished before the game was released, or couldn't be bothered for be finished before release.

      Now we still do unplanned expansions as well as planned. XCOM 2 comes to mind with the War of The Chosen expansion being planned, while the Tactical Legacy Pack was not planned ahead of time. Since it was developed coming up to the anniversary of XCOM as a franchise.

    Doom 3 and RoE are one of the best games I have ever played. Real shame that gaming industry grow out of this awesomeness that were health packs, no quick time events, a lot of in game interaction stuff and many more. The only thign I like more with modern games are iron sights, much better option that just zoom weapon a little.
    And yeah, RoE ending was also.... rushed. I felt that Doom 3 ending was much better done than RoE one.

    • @TheDutchGhost
      @TheDutchGhost Před 8 lety +6

      +2SSSR2 Perhaps Half Life 2 Episode 1 and 2 are also to your liking (or you probably already played those). All these games (Doom 3 + RoE, Half Life 2 Ep 1, Ep 2) all came out during a sort of transition period of First Person Shooters being PC games first and console games, to game that appeared on both consoles and PC (often suffering on the PC), the result being rather visible in both level design and size, and gameplay.
      Designers also seemed to want to make games more 'cinematic', forcing player through certain cutscenes or having to talk to various characters before finally being allowed to move on.
      The First Person Shooter genre has been in rather decline since 2007 and it is frustrating that there has not been any new FPS ip since, only resurrecting old ones.
      As for RoE's ending, I wish the designers had made a clear one instead for going for all this 'Lost ambiguity' nonsense.

      Weird isn't it? It is basically the turning point and I wonder why.
      Gaming wise there have been a few gems for me like Fallout New Vegas but before that there were so many great games I wanted to play but since then outside of the indies there haven't been that much decent games.
      In 2007 Half Life 2 Episode 3 and Metroid Prime 3 came out, I remember that winter being great.
      But since then...
      What happened? Was there some decision by publishers and game developers, not to mention people making Internet content that the quality had to go down?

    • @TheDutchGhost
      @TheDutchGhost Před 8 lety +2

      Rather frustrating that it has all gone down like this. I fear that within ten years gaming in general will be completely irrelevant outside some indie and small developers.
      It will probably all move to mobile devices and televisions capable of directly running or streaming games.
      But who knows, perhaps that can lead to a second golden PC age when the mainstream audience has moved on to other platforms.

    • @TheDutchGhost
      @TheDutchGhost Před 8 lety +2

      Blitzstrk
      Not necessarily a crash, more like mainstream gamers moving on to those online devices I mentioned (televisions that can stream games and devices like the Steam box or whatever it is called).
      Valve, Amazon, and several other companies are now working on such devices and services.
      I would welcome a crash though, the game industry has become to bloated. I don't wish developers to loose their jobs but as the industry has become to focused on making large profits the CEOs and investors keep pushing for games with the largest market appeal which often then suffer in the gameplay department.

    Apparently the Grabber was in development before HL2's release.
    "Resurrection of Evil has come under some criticism about the use of the Grabber due to the prior popularity of the similar weapon in Half-Life 2. The developers have commented that the tool was originally in Doom 3 before Half-Life 2, and was used to create "damaged" rooms; instead of building a ruined room, they would build a pristine room and use the grabber to "damage" it realistically." So that's interesting.
    I did like the increased monster count, though. Doom 3 was very, very slow paced for me. Pinkies were used all of what, 4 or 5 times and Revenants were made slower than PSX Doom's.

    • @nexusshark
      @nexusshark Před 8 lety +4

      +M. Birchman Doom 3 was slow paced because it was a horror shooter. RoE was faster paced because it tried to be more like the classic Doom games, using the Doom 3 engine. That combination didn't work for everyone though.

    • @medec10667
      @medec10667 Před 8 lety +4

      I just find it unfortunate that the combat was so lackluster. Doom was interesting because each monster had a simple purpose and were combo'd with others to make you strategize, where Doom 3's were just as simple but only put in solitary encounters most of the time.
      It's for that reason the "horror" shooter falls short, because the monsters take 10 seconds to teleport in and are simply not smart, numerous or threatening enough (slow-ass revenants doing 17 damage per rocket on Veteran?) and you're loaded to the teeth with health and ammo to deal with them easily. How are monsters supposed to be threatening at all when you can just walk up and shoot them in the head as they play their hour long teleport animations?
      It's just left in this awful blend of trying to have oldschool run and gun shooter combat with the pacing of a survival horror game, and they picked all the wrong parts to mix. RoE improved that, then made it even easier anyway by adding the artifact... the two are just disappointing.

    I recall my first experience with Resurrection of Evil being particularly special, which might have been due to my graphics card.
    The visual effects created by the Grabber and the Artifact did some magical things. The Grabber's visual effect is represented by a giant circle in the center of the screen when latching on to something, which looked a bit glaring. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't flip the perspective within the circle completely upside down. And using the artifact flipped the whole screen upside-down, which made the mandatory artifact sections a royal pain.
    That being said, I'm somewhat grateful that I didn't know how to fix these visual bugs at the time, because it meant I could spend most of the game without using the incredibly overpowered Artifact. I think I only completed it on Normal Difficulty, though, I should go back and try Veteran Mode at some point.

    The "Vulgar" enemy was actually id Software's original Archvile design for Doom 3. They dropped the design shortly after they nailed in the Hellknight design, and wanted the other demons to fit that style instead.
    So the model was removed from the game completely. As were a couple other early model concepts that featured more horns and spikes.

    I played this expansion on Hard Mode, and I gotta say I've never hated Revenants more than during the back half or so of the game. It just loves to spawn them in in these cramped spaces where there's little room to avoid their rockets. I remember one particularly irritating part where I was dealing with like two of 'em and one other enemy from the front only to get taken out by another god damn Revenant that I had no idea had spawned behind me. As with F.E.A.R. I was trying not to rely on the time slowing mechanic too much because I didn't want it to turn into a crutch but near the last half or so with the enemy count going through the roof it's obvious that the developers reeeeeaaaally want you to use it.

    Man, going back in time couldn't feel any better. The words "expansion pack" are so alien since "DLC" and "Pre-order exclusive bonus" are now thrown around these days. Also, it is so true that most expansion packs had far more content packed in than a lot of DLCs of today. Basically, expansion packs cut the the bull$hit and offer a better deal for your wallet.

    I'm actually playing Doom 3 right now, it's good for what it is though I get a lot of Half Life vibes with it. Great review. I'm gonna play it after I finish Doom 3. We occasionally on a blue moon get a proper expansion in the modern age of gaming. I mean Wolfenstein: The New Order was a really good one that came out last year and hopefully Fallout 4's Far Harbor expansion is gonna be some good fun. I hate it when Destiny calls their DLC expansions, it's glorified DLC people. You get roughly the same amount of content as you would by buying some CoD map packs. I'm very disappointed that the new DOOM is going the same route in DLC map packs, I wished they would do an expansion instead.

The expansion packs I consider to be the best include Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity for Quake 1, Mysteries of the Sith for Jedi Knight, the Plutonium Pak and Duke Caribbean for Duke 3D, the Plasma Pak and Cryptic Passage for Blood, the Nitro Pack for Interstate '76, and Opposing Force for Half-Life. I also am partial to expansions in other genres, like Hellfire for Diablo 1, Beyond the Dark Portal for WarCraft II, and Brood War for StarCraft. I lament that some of the awesome games from the past didn't get expansion packs, like Sacrifice, Deus Ex, Alice, or Giants: Citizen Kabuto.
