I have seen wire harness’s destroyed because of a poor connection from the ground strap on the battery to the frame due to paint on the frame, or the ground strap ring connector being secured under an engine mount bolt that snapped ..preventing a good connection. What happens is, when you hit the starter button to start your bike. You need a very good ground for that process of using the maximum power from your battery at that moment. If you don’t have a good ground, what happens is, there are lots of little grounds in the wire harness connected to the frame in a few places, like under the gas tank at the coils ..Those little wires have ring connectors, then go to ground. When you push your start button, your electrical system is grounded through those tiny wires instead of through the thick cable going from your battery to the ground strap to the frame... I have replaced 2 complete wire harnesses on Yamaha motorcycles with this issue. Back in the 1990s, a wire harness, a simple wire harness compared to today. Wire harness was over $400. I can’t imagine how much a harness for something like a royal star venture or a GL 1800 Goldwing would cost today. and just imagine what the labor cost is to replace it.. those relatively simple machines that the wire harness got melted on were Yamaha XS 650 twins that went out of production I believe in 1993. Because those tiny 14 or 16 gauge wires were carrying all the negative load, they actually melted the insulation off and then ended up burning into other wires in the wire harness. The reason for that was pretty much because the XS 650 did not start instantly. Those machines had to be cranked sometimes for about five seconds when cold. That was enough time to make that wire harness light up like an Edison lightbulb in places.. I can just imagine the havoc and damage a poor ground connection would make on a fuel injected motorcycle.. I would run a resistance check on those wires that had the damaged ends. And I probably don’t have to tell you that your alternator puts out more than enough amps to kill.
I have an 08 Royal Star Tour Deluxe doing the same crap. I guess I have to try shaping out that 30 AMP fuse....battery voltage is at 12.35 volts. Should be enough.
I'm hoping you can help me with this question. Is there a replacement bulb for the speedometer in the dash? All my other lights i.e. neutral, o/d, etc on the dash light up fine . I cannot find anywhere on the net for that question
