One trick I use to get a straight line on wood that has no straight/square outer reference edge is to use the 3-4-5 triangle method, using one of the straight glue lines as one of the sides. That'll get you 90 degrees to the glue line, which is what you are after. Beautiful door, Johnny!
Love the modified live-edge slab. It really worked well for this project. Not so sure about the hardware screwing into the end grain, for longevity. But it does look nice. Great job.
Man I would never look at that and think that that was multiple pieces of wood. It looks fantastic, and very seamless. I agree as well about the handle it just would take away from the whole thing. Nice work!
Another awesome video, Johnny! Thanks for the shoutout! Love how your sliding barn door came out. You came up with a great solution using two smaller slabs to make a single, large one. I've looked at slabs that are huge, and you're right...I think the one I saw was over $800. Whoa! That hardware looks really slick...might have to find another reason to build another door now. ;)
Bruce we love the projects you're working on and thanks for the props on our hardware, Johnny knows what he is doing, let us know if you have any exciting project coming up
Whew!!!!!!! that was a lot of work and planning...….It turned out perfect......BTW you have a shop to die for......The very best of luck to you in the future...….Thank you for your Vid!
Nice looking door. Great build. Though I think you are going to need to rework that slide guide on the bottom as the door is going to "thump" as it swings due to pressure changes when windows are open in the house.
Did you do anything to prevent the remaining bark from falling off? I think that slabs look so much better, if the bark is left on, but it seems like most woodworkers remove the bark, which I think detracts a lot from the slab aesthetic. If anyone has any suggestions, I’d appreciate your comments.
barbara kvistad I have seen some people Lee bark on by adding some type of a penetrating resin to the bark. I think I first saw Matt Cremona do this. I’ve tried it, but the epoxy I used is glossy so it was still not the look I was going for.
I’ve finished many pieces of live edge with bark. You can use epoxy.. but absolutely not necessary. I have just recently finished some oak like edge kitchen shelves and finished with danish oil. I used a foam brush to apply the oil to the live edge by dabbing the oil in and catching any drips. Make sure to do that last because otherwise small pieces of debris will be in the main finish.
This slab had no bark on to begin with, it’s highly dependent on when the tree was cut down. You can definitely epoxy any loose pieces, but if the bark is super loose, it’ll probably be a pain to try to get to stay on.
great work, nice idea, thanks for sharing! I have one question: Why all that jump-cuts while you talk? They are driving me crazy and I can't focus on what you are saying.
I would imagine getting the script right in one take is very difficult unless you use some sort of teleprompter app on an iPad, or something similar. I would guess if he screws up what he's saying or changes and wants to say something different then he keeps rolling and edits all the footage after the fact.
Sadly the impression then islikew*missingwheny*justeditit*ethat. Pauses and mistakes are totally fine to me, why hiding them? But, ok, that's the way how I see it, don't want to put pressure on you, more the opposite. Keep up the good work!

Nice, good trick! Good old Pythagorean, I'll have to remember that one.
Chris Williams I never thought of using the glue line as a reference. Good idea!
That's awesome dude! Turned out sweet. I agree that no handle is needed, it would only detract from the look.
I agree, but I don't know if I would have thought to leave one off. How is it being able to think independently, Johnny? ha
Thanks man!
Can't tell you how much I love that. It looks awesome and I agree with your choice of not adding a handle. Very nicely done!
Thanks man’
another piece of art
Awesome build Johnny! You've got some of the best projects on the tubes!
Johnny’s channel is the best thing on CZcams right now. Interesting projects, well made videos and a great eye for design. Keep up the good work.
Really like the juxtaposition of the modern hardware and the slab.
Thanks, me too!
Pat, thanks for the kind words, we love the timeless modern look of stainless against this rustic slab too
So good.
Hey Johnny. Another thing you can do when doing threads in wood is to add super glue to the hole sides before tapping. Thanks for sharing.
Love the modified live-edge slab. It really worked well for this project. Not so sure about the hardware screwing into the end grain, for longevity. But it does look nice. Great job.
I love barn doors . The stainless steel looks great
Thanks Frank!
he certainly made this combo work very well!
Turned out great! Awesome color and grain match.
Thanks man!
yep he sure is an artist
Clever idea mate, turned out beautiful!
Thanks man!
Excellent work would of never thought a live edge barn door looks awesome and great shop
Thanks Joseph!

Thanks, glad it looks like one big slab!
super slick job in deed
Oh my goodness this is beautiful! You r an amazing Craftsman. I wish I had those tools I would love to have a door like that in my home.
That's a BIG ass door! Nice looking finish!
Thanks Joe!

Great job! The door looks great and i like your problem solving solution at the end.
A great door and awesome project overview. The door looks ridiculous in that room.
Love it! I might have to have one of each (Bruces modern look version & yours). The door truly looks like 1 huge slab as oppose to different boards.
Thanks Janie, I really love both of our doors!
You ever thought of building a man cave and adding sliding doors charging stools and classic wood tabkes. I think a man cave would be ace
That’d be nice
Crafted Workshop something I'd definitely like to see wooden shed "man cave" And all you projects inside
Wow man, that door is off the hinges!
Thanks Josh!
That's pretty cool. It looks like a slab right off of a bandsaw mill.
Thanks!
Looks awesome, Johnny! Have you ever tried using the glue seam on a panel to find square? C-channel is the new domino... haha
Nice job clean A.F.
Great project! Love how that looks.
Thanks!
This def gives me the motivation to do this in my house
Go for it!
let us know if you need any help
@@kncrowder4426 Definitely will! Thank you!

This one is slabTastic 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Awesome build!

Beautiful piece!
Thanks!
wow man, I really like the way that came out! love the way you made it :)
Thanks Marylou!

I’m right in thinking that you would always see the C channel on the other side when the door’s closed though? (or have I missed something)
I was about to ask the same.
Nice looking door. Great build. Though I think you are going to need to rework that slide guide on the bottom as the door is going to "thump" as it swings due to pressure changes when windows are open in the house.
Thanks! And there is a gap between the trim and the door, I don't think there's any way the air pressure change would move the door.
Nicely done Johnny! 👍👊
Thanks Fred!
Beautiful!
As usual, amazing job!
Thanks Guy!
very nice. would the domino have worked as an alternative to create a deeper rebate in the bottom?
Thanks! I guess I could have cut a ton of Dominos mortisers but that would have been pretty slow.
Really cool!!
Thanks!
Very nice!
Thanks James!
This video was awesome!
Thanks Jonathan!
Very cool!
Thanks!
Good stuff, man! 👏😏
Awesome spin on the 'traditional' barn door look! FYI, your link to KN Crowder could be more focused, it currently leads to the contact page.
thanks , we will get that changed, cheers
Cool!
Thanks Daniel!
I love the door, but not fond of how it goes with the original trim around the doorway.
He was going to replace it but they probably thinking to move out and take the barn door to their new house
I dig it.
Thanks!

@@craftedworkshop would you say a handle looks good if the wood is a darker color?
Que linda!!!👏👏👏
Gracias!
Great vid as always! Learned something new! Thanks! How do you know the right span between those c-channels?
Thanks! And I just spaced them about ⅓ to ¼ in, doesn’t have to be precise.
@@craftedworkshop oh I meant the two grooves you made. 😅 but thanks for that too!
Yea, I’m talking about the grooves. I meant ⅓ of the way down the slab.
@@craftedworkshop ohh right right. Gotcha! Really appreciate it man! 🙏
Forgot to ask how you are liking the CT Cyclone?
Working well so far!
What color and brand is that paint your friends have on their walls? @craftedworkshop
The Canadian rail company don’t sell to the UK. 😢
Rockler sells something similar, not sure if they ship to the UK!
epic
Thanks!
Similar to frank howarth's
Yea, Frank's door was awesome!
Indeed

So, the bottom of the door is loose ?
Gravity keeps it against the guide, it doesn't swing at all.
@@craftedworkshop good to know ^^
all of our KNC products come with channel guides, if you choose to use another option like Johnny did all good too
I find your collection of tools more impressive than the project. Jealous

Sweet looking door. Check out the barn door hardware in this video: czcams.com/video/7sLQ-2rCdmw/video.html
looks like a 10 dollar saddle on a 10 cent horse.
So you're saying you don't like the look of the slab? If so, something is wrong with your eyes.
no Im saying this is too nice for john's house.
1st woooo
Nice!
Too bad the hardware has nothing to do with the aesthetic of the wood.
That’s an expensive sliding door
Wood is expensive.
