- Adam unboxes a set of new writing tools from the designers at Makers Cabinet. First off is a their Ferrule pencil holder that grips a standard wooden pencil using a machining collet. Adam also checks out a prototype of their new Lazlo ballpoint pen (named after the inventor of the ballpoint). The springless mechanism deploying the pen is so satisfying!

Thanks for watching!
Makers Cabinet:
The modern ballpoint pen was invented by László Bíró, a Hungarian-Argentine inventor, patented in Paris in 1938. That might be where the name 'LAZLO' comes from.
“I don’t have a pencil sharpener so lemme go use the belt sander” is quite possibly the most quintessential Adam Savage sentence ever
As a photographer, the Iris spoke to me. I didn’t realize it was a circle-drawing tool until I checked their website.!
I love brass, it's such a perfect material for making tools and fasteners. It's corrosion resistant, durable, malleable, firm but not brittle, it takes a nice polish but it still looks amazing with wear, and it has a pretty gold-like color.
I'm a huge fan of metal writing instruments, especially steel and brass fountain pens. This looks like it would be a really nice companion piece. Thanks for sharing!
Adam, invite us for a drink at Lazlo sometime? When you're next in London, come visit our workshop and then pints at The Victory - our local pub in Bethnal Green: sticky shag carpets, a dodgy pool table, a jukebox with a very random mix... but always well-poured Guinness 🍻
Laszlo, after Laszlo Biro, the inventor of the ball point pen. (and why pens in British English, are called Biros).
Going to sharpen the pencil and hearing the sander boot up is the best thing ever lmao
"This is not a quid pro quo" . "Thanks for sending me free stuff"
Are you doing okay? That's the cleanest I've seen your hands. And no bandage in sight.
A knurled texture where you grip the pen to write would be good.
The pencil holder reminds me so much of the old blackboard chalk holders my teachers would use in class.
Man that is such a satisfying click the Laszlo makes.
Adam, in the wood lathe hobby community, pen and pencil making (using kits, but making the shell) is a common sub-branch of the hobby. If you're not already aware of it, look up "pen kit" in any of the woodworking online companies. People use wood usually, but acrylic, bone, and metal are also used.
Adam... once again... Wow! You find / get the nicest things... Just impressive workmanship in what we take for granted, the humble pencil... so satisfying and nice!
Great.. now with the tattoo available I expect there will be dozens of Adam cosplays at Comic-con.
Anytime I hear "Lazlo" I immediately think of Real Genius. He could throw those sweepstakes clear over those mountains, man.
Thanks Mr. Savage. your passion is wonderful!
I've loved pens since I was a kid, I have a quite large collection of them from fountain pens to glass pens, to feather and normal ballpoints, I love the Fisher space pens, any writing tool I am into! This is very nice, I love brass, one of my favourite fountain pens is a Kaweco Brass Sport!
