    I recently lifted the front of my Baha, and was experiencing a lot of wandering. I had heard about caster shims but never got a definitive answer as where to put them on the top or bottom. Thank you so much for explaining this. Great video. I may add this to my channel. But will give you credit sir. Thanks again.

      I just looked these up on apple tree and noticed they come in different degrees of thickness also. My Baja is lifted pretty extreme. Cut and cranked with thing trailing arms and spindles. So I’m thinking probably I need the thicker ones.

      @larrymcgarage I have a 63 baja with a stock kingpin front beam. It has adjusters on both beams but I don't know how to raise them higher to get a bit more front end lift.
      Do you have or know of any videos I can refer to?
      There's more adjustment on the set screws/bolts but the preload on the torsion bars won't let me go any further if that makes sense?
      Thanks

  • @muzzcovw7674
    @muzzcovw7674 Před 7 měsíci +1

    I totally agree with adding these in many situations, ESPECIALLY if you do any freeway driving! The difference in directional stability at speed is phenomenal. I can easily run 75, 80 MPH now easily. These cars were designed with a lack of caster for easier steering, but ther easily a trade-off in stability. WELL worth it... as well as a proper 4 wheel alignment

      @@SladesVWBeetleLOL! Some feel that a garage alignment is enough, but after experiencing that and a proper 4 wheel i totally disagree. My '75 standard was so far off in the rear. I can now actually throw it into corners hard up here in the hills of western Mass and its now totally planted, and doesn't feel like I'm going to launch into the woods. Took the highways from here to a VW show in NYC last summer and it was fantastic on the highway

    Nice video. When you add the shims, you need to also remove the small line up tabs on the bottom of the beam where the steering box clamp goes on. Because it changes the angle of the steering shaft of the steering box, to the steering column. This information is from samba,that I have read over the years. I need to do this upgrade to my bug also.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yes, exactly. Although my tabs are on the top tube of the beam. It does really help, I have also read a lot on this and watched quite a few videos. I’m going to test fit the beam this week. So I’ll make sure I bring that up.

    Thanks for the video Slade !! Question do you have to pull the beam out or can you just loosen it and slide them behind the beam.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hey my friend!
      You do not have to remove the beam. Just loosen all four bolts very slightly, and then take a crowbar and pry the bottom of the beam slightly just enough to slide the shims in.
      And then of course, pull the bottom two out and put your longer bolts in.
      I’m going to be doing the install this coming week.
      So I’m going to go over quite a few things like checking the angle of your steering box.
      It might not affect it, but if it does, It’s easy to adjust. Stay tuned brother I’ll be showing that in about four days.

    This is just the video I wanted to see. I have a lowered beam, and it came with these Shims, but no bolts(I bought someone's project) and was wondering if I needed the Shims or not, and now I know. Thanks.
    I have a question, Is it a bad idea to use lowered spindles with an adjustable beam?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  Před 7 měsíci

      You are perfectly fine using lowering spindles with an adjustable beam. If you scroll back a few videos, I show the beam, with the lowering spindles on them. Make sure you get the longer bolts, and also adjust your steering box if needed so it’s not off.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  Před 7 měsíci +2

      You can do drop spindles with a stock beam, as I have done before. If you are at 60 MPH going down the highway and it’s smooth and doesn’t start wandering around then I would leave it alone. But I did describe in the video, it even helps stock beetles out. That are wandering on the highways.
