U the real MVP.
The D-50 has such a special warm and full sound while being digital, it's very unique. Great synth, I've had one since 1994 and I've bought and sold many synths, but it's the one I've always kept (and always will keep)
Bought this years ago for my daughter, and can't remember about the internal vse the read only card. Seems like I borrowed a book and made a lot of other sounds in the internal. Did the internal have the same programed sounds the read only card had but allowed you to make changes internally? after years of sitting the battery died inside and I lost all internal sounds. How do I get them back?
Staccato heaven sound reminds me of my youth back in Mexico. There is a band by the name of Grupo Samurai and they used this iconic sound for about 70% of their songs. I still listen to them to this day thanks to CZcams!!!!
When I’m feeling low, your channel cheers me up. I loved the opening. Keep your inspirational work up. Few CZcamsrs convey the joy of music making with synthesisers like you do.
"One synthesiser is too many.
A thousand are not enough."
Geddy Lee, RUSH.
Wait did geddy actually said that
wait, why is one too many? i'm dumb, could anyone explain like i'm 5? I can see the other part.
(btw synths own
@@SimonPiano42 One's too many because of the time you spend on the things, either sound designing, maintaining or repairing them in the case of some vintage synths. And because you only need one to act as the gateway drug for the next 40 (you're at 3, you'll get there!!!!) 🙂
Most unbelievable intro ever. I don't think you'd turn down a synthesizer even if you were buried in a room full of them lol.
I watched the whole, long, video, because it was a joy to watch you jam and react to your own nostalgia.
Mine is waiting onthe shelf at the moment. soon he will get of. ;-)
Claudio, undoubtedly one of your best videos and also shows your deep love for each of the patches that you showed of this fantastic keyboard. Your face of happiness! I understand you perfectly because I had the D-50 many years ago. Now listening to it again, all that magic and melancholy came back for those great sounds designed by Eric Persing. Damn! I should never have sold it. Thanks for sharing.
Such a fantastic synthesizer! Super classic patches! Thank you, Doctor Mix for sharing!
It's always fun to see a musician having fun and reliving past good times.
i really love the way you play that thing. i can feel your joy in the sounds flowing from your heart, through your fingers and out of the speakers.
ahhhh, 55 minutes of bliss, always love your jams and solo's
Have this synth for 34 years now. Still use and love it!
I could play with this for hours, days, weeks. Fantastic!
Had a D50 for a few weeks in the 80’s while my D10 was repaired. Wonderful sounds!
Soundtrack. The best pad of all time!
Jaw droppingly beautiful. I get tears in the eyes when I play it on my D50.
Yes, let's hear those awesome Eric Persing patches!
Eric Persing probably had the biggest "meta" impact on music out of anyone... The sounds he designed can be found anywhere from hit music from the 90s to the music of video games of our childhoods and teenage years like Silent Hill, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time etc... Seriously the guy is my hero.
@@zomologorg I share your statement. And what he is doing with Spectrasonics is simply amazing. I use Keyscape and I get the best piano sounds imaginable.

@@zomologorg Eric is my hero, too. His patches continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers.
@@JamesBermingham Soundtrack is a monumental achievement as far as I'm concerned. It wouldn't have been easy to create that patch. It sounds incredible. It's one of my favourites.
DOC, your presentations and enthusiasm are amazing and so unique, ‘one and only’.....nobody can do the same way as you do. Sei inimitabileeeee! 👏🏻👏🏻
It's nice to see how much joy you exude while performing extensively on the D-50
Thanks Doctor! Sometimes listening to patches just heal the soul! At 31:38 I almost cried listening to that patch. Great vid!
When we were young and there weren't so many synthesizers, we could devote all our time and effort to explore a single synth... and the D-50 was one of such synths. If you know your way around this synth, you must be like me 😅
it's always great to see Claudio unpacking a new synthesizer, you can literally feel the joy of playing the first note :-) that´s why we are on this channel ..i wish i could play just a little like him
Yup. My most loved synth. I will never get rid of my D-50 and PG-1000 combo. Cool to see this vid! Well done and thank you very much Mr!
The sound of this synthesizer is highly appreciated in Chile and Latin America because many cumbia bands used it, especially the sound of the minute 9:54 I recommend listening to "mujeres y cerveza" from the band "alegria" there the D50 is used and I think the korgM1 too
I still love the D 50, more than 30 years later, especially with its programmer PG 1000. But what I also like is your good mood!
That Fantasia patch is soooo nice. Love your enthusiasm dr. Mix.
Great synth! Soundtrack is such a great and classic sound.
Thank you for another great vid!

It's so amazing how you find the appropriate tunes for different patches. 5 thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍

Vintage synths still sound awesome, they will always sound awesome!
Hands down one of the most precious synths on the planet.

Bringing back the old days mate. Made so much music with these sounds...
Serious, I bought one just 2 weeks ago. What an awesome synth, great sounds.
D-50 wonderful instrument from the 80s, perfect for new age music compositions. Thank you for sharing this passion for instruments. I had a strong emotion when you played with the I24 Combie String OMG sound. L-O-V
Claudio you read my mind! I was waiting for a D-50 deep dive. Thank you!
That’s in fabulous condition! I recall the build quality of Roland stuff of that era was always good...Well done 👍
It‘s not the D-50 alone which makes this video sound great. It‘s also the player. :)
@
Doctor Mix Fun fact: most Japanese musicians, songwriters and arrangers or musicians still uses some of those D-50 presets until today, along with instruments from Logic Pro X, Cubase, FL Studio, Mixcraft and Ableton Live, with traditional japanese/oriental instruments like the Koto or the Shakuhachi flute and percussions sounds like Taikos and Gongs, with pianos, strings and drums and a lot of synthesizer/bell sounds too!
Great! Awesome! Claudio, your playing is alway so inspiring. Many thanks!
Going to keep coming back to this video just to hear this man play beautiful music like it’s nothing
The D-50 is definitely one of the cooler 80s/90s synths, and like you said, it was groundbreaking for its time. A friend of mine worked in a pawn shop and one came in - keyboard player needed money, so he sold his synth. Well my buddy snatched it up for $200. I borrowed it from him for about a month and he offered to sell it to me for like $400. You know I still kick myself for not buying it, right?
Along with the other amazing songs mentioned here, the D50 was also used for the intro and soundtrack for Star Trek The Next Generation!
Yeah~ I love my D-50 too. So your video always has value to watch. Thank you very much indeed 😆
Bringing back memories of the 80s for me... Thanks!
I came for “Orinoco Flow”...was not disappointed.
I was just about to comment the same thing hahaha
Such a gem. I'll cherish mine forever. Playing daily. Also quite cool to make your own patches
yeah, cumbersome but still fun. it's incredible how much potential this synth still has. Some patches may sound dated but i've heard some custom presets by other people and my god, no other synth sounds like that out of the box.
4:45 lovely mate. And it's nice to hear your vocals come in as well on this one
Love it Dr Mix, I still own my D50 and love it to bits. Way beyond the factory presets I have a library of over 14000 patches and some of them are superb. Great deconstruction of the synth.
Love my D50
31:10 is from the breakdown in Shout by Tears for Fears. We got you 80's fam!
Nice work. Loved my D50 back in the day. Have just dug up some of my old 4 track demo's I did in the late 80's. Classic sounds!
Completely enjoyed this one man. Takes me back and actually got me searching for one of my own again. Keep it up.!

That's the most obscure reference I ever seen but you're dang right.
Excellent synth demo! love when you play something to show the presets, that way i hear much more of the sound palette.
Just scored one of these today! Found both your videos on the D50 so great and inspiring me to play it. I’m a guitar player but these are such great sounds from my late teens.
The D-50 is a wonderful synthesizer! Yesterday I picked one up for only 80 €, I even got a suitcase with it. A cable was loose and the battery was dead so it didn't work. Now I have to buy a better midi interface that transmits SysEx so that I can load the factory patches onto the D-50.
Hi, Doctor! I really love your series about synthesizers! Presenting synths in more detailed way is very interesting, that's a great thing!! What about Moog Polymoog? Are you gonna present this instrument some day? It is one of my favourite synths of all time and I'd love to see that! Best greetings from Poland!! Stay safe:)
Yes, do Polymoog.
Love your jam and your music feelings, love the D-50's sounds, the longuest video but one of the best ! Need that synth !
Well congratulations Dr mix you just broke the record and I'm so proud of you because you have one of my dream synthesizers
Wow, a D-50!
Used to have one in 1988, one of the best digital synth Roland ever made and also I consider somehow ahead of it's time.
Enjoy it Claudio!
PS. Make room on Studio B for more stuff, I know more is coming...LOL!
I have the D-05 boutique. It's the perfect recreation of the D50 and has all the presets from the original and all the extra cards that were released later, more than 300 in total . Great sounds and great demo, Dottore! Very entertaining als always....
So do I, as its now discontinued .... its also going up in value ;)
@@TheB1gduk with how much it's going for you may as well buy a D550 or D50 now. Was looking to get a D05 and it's just not worth it.
@@benanderson89 that’s true but I bet in another 10 years the D05 is still working whilst older gear will start to fail. Saying that Roland Cloud is another solution, though I don’t like the idea of subscription models as I dip in and out , a bit like paying a gas bill while you are not home. I digress :)
@@TheB1gduk Old digital synths are built like tanks, often out of solid metal (the D50 has a metal chassis underneath). If they've lasted thirty years already then they'll last thirty more. DX7s from 1983 for example have only needed a battery replacement to keep working to this day. The D05 meanwhile is made of plastic and uses a switching power supply Instead of a transformer like the original, and switching supplies will need new caps long before a transformer fails (if it ever does); plus the D05 is all surface mount components where older units are through hole; maintenance will be a nightmare when it eventually needs it.
Not saying the D05 is bad (again, I tried to buy one), but saying it'll outlive an original D50 is probably not true.
@@benanderson89 I hope you are right well I hope they all stand the test if time. Finding a good example is another challenge.
great work Doctpr thanx for your patience (&spontaneity at the same time!!) - Please keep on.....
This is how love for synths looks like ❤️ I like it 😎
Still love and use my D50
Have had mine since late1988, still a very useable synth. Backup battery just died and it dumped internal memory with several collected and custom patches. It’s backed up in three places....now where are those three places 😂

Thanks for the Inspiration playing my Roland D-50 cloud version amazing sound classics
AMAZING! Thanks for the entertainment. Watched the whole video with a BIG smile.
Probably 90% of Jean Michel Jarres Album Revolutions is build with presets from this gear. :)
Yep, Mix of factory presets, Roland's own ROM card presets, and some early 3rd party ROM card presets too... The VC-1 "card" of my V-Synth XT and my D-05 Boutique both have a suitable bank of nostalgic sounds... ;) When Claudio was going through the samples I wondered if he'd reach the "Loop" samples... Think it's either "Loop10" or "Loop11" that's really famous on that album...
Not wrong !!!
yes and its intresting to know who made the presets
Roland D-50, Korg DSS-1, Korg DSM-1, Fairlight CMI, Synthex, EMS Synthi AKS, OSC OSCar, EMS Vocoder, Dynacord Add-one, Cristal Baschet, Akai MPC60, drum programming, percussions, Vocoder on "Revolutions"
YAMAHA DX7 : Every presets! Next!
Dx27 would be cool too. It has presets none of the other DXs had.
@@EdwardT9
But nothing that couldn't be programmed into the other DXs.
dx7 is impossible because all presets can be programable an create everything

We already love you!
I loveeeeee this Synth one of my favorites!
Will never part with my D-550, gorgeous machine that still holds its own today!
Is the D-550 the rack mount module ?
@@JoeLinux2000 Yep! 2U rackmount equivalent, all the same factory presets too. Built like a tank. Sadly rarer to come by these days than the keyboard equivalent.
19:50 Bass sound of "Danger Zone" from the Top Gun soundtrack
22:10 JMJ "Souvenir of China" strings
34:08 Organ sound from "Faith" intro by George Michael
38:20 "Sail Away" by Enya
39:55 "Slave to the Rhythm" pad (Grace Jones)
54:31 "Watermelon Man" Herbie Hancock intro flute sound (Probably not the real sound, because Herbie Hancock used the CMI a lot)
The Bass sound of Danger Zone came from a Yamaha DX-7.
Souvenir of China was recorded in 1981. The D50 sold from the year ‘87 to ‘89. Impossible that Jarre used the D50 for that track.
I finally got around to watching this one. Man, there are some really nice patches in this thing. That would be a great edition to my Roland JX3P and Ensoniq ESQ-1.
I have two D-50 and one D-550, I love this machine, an iconic sound 😉👍🏼
Many sounds were used by Jean Michel Jarre.
Rendez Vous and Revolutions for example.
Name at least one patch used in these two songs?

Great video, would love to see more of those (with different synths). I love how you can find great melody that just works with the preset.
My lovely synth.thank you for posting
I have the D-05 and it's a great addition, but I don't think the vintage D-50 will appreciate much because the Roland Cloud, System 8, and Zen Core hardware can all replicate the sound exactly, it was digital to begin with.
Very good ! Only the songs by J.M.Jarre from the album Revolution were missing
and Enya :(
@@F-Andre He played a bit of Orinoco Flow when demonstrating the Pizzagogo patch (albeit in a lower octave), which is what Enya used on that track.
Goosebumps the very moment you opened that case!

31:13 - "Shout" by Tears For Fears (1985)
🔥💥
On this roland D-50 can fly to Mars and back ))
Right but, as you say, "Shout" it's from '85. The D-50 was commercialized in 1987. Unless i'm mistaken, the flute sound it's from a Fairlight.
@@TheRenormalization It was an Emulator.
The ONLY real downside of that synthesis was the attack sample didn't go through the filter. Only the synth waveforms did. But i wonder how many times people even noticed that little limitation.
You could always run it through an external filter.
There is actually one more, but that's the final one. What am I talking about? Roland's decision to NOT let the joystick send out MIDI !!! What were they thinking? The rest is pure joy! :D
@@curiouscatlabincgetsworrie7755 lol go easy on them. They probably wanted to but had to somehow not delay the release of this thing even more ;) I don't think the Vectorstick of the Yamaha SY22 sent out the movements via MIDI either. But i could be wrong.
My first Sampler was the D-50 as well, bought it in early 1993, bought my 909 in the same year for $350 from someone who worked at Paisley Park, an engineer Chuck Zawicki. good times for ever. I love your vids, so glad you do them. Questo e la mia musica che ho fatto come venti ani fa. I'm not italian, a Minnesotan, I speak a little Italian however, 4 months there in Milano mostly, anyway. Bello ciao.
Thank you Claudio for the long video!
The one keyboard I have I'd never sell.
Don't sell it
That synth is hella precious so don't sell it.
This Synth is one of the holy grails, if you sell that, you maybe never become a D-50 back or you must pay a lot of money to get it back. Maybe not that expensive like a very rare Jupiter-80, but a D-50 has also a bit of a price. And why should you sell it?! The D-50 is still a great device nowadays, with great sounds to produce or make live music or just to have fun.
