Tbh, even if we look past USADA and overcoming striking, even Gordon’s BJJ game would have to change. Right now he has developed a style that is basically designed to gas his opponents over a long period of time with constant pressure.
Yes, he has been able to produce quick submissions, but this isn’t his A-game and it was against BJJ folks at a BJJ pace.
A UFC Gordon Ryan is un-roided, can at least defend against top tier strikers, and is much, much more explosive/faster moving in the grapple. Could he do it? Probably, I think so, but he’d have to get started ASAP and it would likely mean leaving the BJJ scene for awhile while he prepped.
We’ve seen these leg-lockers get exposed plenty with ground and pound. Sub Grapplers that accept TDs, pull guard and leg-attack constantly get fking smashed in the UFC. Plus he can’t juice anymore??? Nah it ain’t happenin…..
You realize ufc fighters still take roids even with testing
Up most confidence and professional statue that needs to be seen in all sports future. Applauded.
You do know he takes ped roids all that right?
Correct decision. He has not much to win and everything to loose in MMA. Also, Gordon is a bright guy and I would hate see him getting brain damage over time.
It would take time to recalibrate his training and get acclimated to strikes… as an amazing “analytical” athlete he could go far. There are strikers who evolved as he did in grappling and rounded out their game to do just fine.
We saw the template, to some degree, with Roger Gracie where he himself said it was his decision to cement his legacy in Gi and no-Gi vs a rededication to MMA.
👊
I think what a lot of people underestimate with steroid use is skill acclimation. Gordon's skill acquisition is second to none, and we all know about steroid issues in bjj. Personally, if both competitors are openly on substances, I wouldn't mind. But the UFC likes to appear clean.
Would take a long time to pass a USADA test too

1. It would be interesting to see Ryan in MMA, just because he's clearly specialized in one area. I don't know if he would be fighting at 185 or 205 but there's zero chance he would compete at any other weight
2. Ryan would need to enter the Usada testing pool, and I'm pretty certain that he would not piss clean.
3. He's a tremendous grappler, but think about how he realistically would match up with someone like Pat Downey in mma- who BTW, just lost. His success doesn't come from being explosive, it comes from strategy. That's more conducive to ju jitsu than mma. He's not going to be a champion in the UFC, unless he gets a very favorable match up. The MMA world looks different these days , a good portion of competitors have trained MMA from day one instead of the old way of focusing on one discipline and then picking up others later in your career to be able to compete . Gordon has put all his focus on BJJ and done so successfully , at this point in his career to start adding striking etc would be a major disadvantage if he joined MMA and was against someone who trained several disciplines their whole life . IMO i would stay right where he is , continue to be the captain , and steer the BJJ ship into the mainstream like hes been doing .

Generally speaking, BJJ specialists actually do terrible in MMA. Gordon is a terrible wrestler and therefore a terrible grappler. What he does works in BJJ tournaments, but this style is not for fighting. Also, BJJ is a full time job. There's no way Gordon can strike at a high level. Gordon would get smashed in the UFC.
@@theemperorcharlemagne I see your point but if you think a wrestler is going to just grapple Gordon Ryan without the threat of being placed in compromised position, then we’re not on the same page.
