The best thing I ever did for my style was to give away all my tunics, about 10 years ago. It took me several years to figure out why I always felt frumpy, it was those long, boxy tops.
There is a lovely old English poem, by John Herrick, that is entitled 'Delight in Disorder'. It speaks of having a bit of clothing, even a hair ribbon undone slightly, to add interest!
The French also have a term for that: desinvolte. Something a bit undone prevents the try-too-hard effect. French women are masters of this. It is supposed to look "effortless" but believe me, they have thought it out thoroughly.
You did a great job articulating a hard concept! Well done and so helpful
Interesting topic. I may have to listen a dozen times to really grasp it.
These are the types of videos you should be doing instead of sponsored videos. They are true to you and your knowledge of clothes and how to present them to women of a certain age. You can see the planning and research that went into this content.
One of the most helpful videos on styling and outfits I’ve ever watched. Thank you Kay!!
The all black base with that bright cobalt jacket … WOW! Beautiful heels didn’t hurt either.
I kept 2 long sweaters that are too heavy to tuck-- going in donate bag cause they’re not good proportions. Thx for mentioning posture… I’m in my 70’s & can still hear my mother saying “stand up straight” from 60 yrs ago!! So many people just slouch & look terrible!
❤ You did a great job explaining these concepts, Kay. I especially liked the examples of personal intensity by using photos of many different women. This video even cleared up a makeup mystery for me. I FINALLY understand why I always think most eyeshadows are too dark for me. 🎉 Both my skin and eyes are light intensity. (Hair is medium.). A medium shade of eyeshadow always seems to look too dramatic on me (in my opinion) but that same shade looks natural on my friend because it matches her intensity. When I use it, I’m aiming for daytime natural but end up looking like I’m going somewhere special for the evening.
Wow! Kaye, that was a whole lot of data at one time. I am going to watch again. The contrast is a great topic as well as the horizontal lines which most folks don't really think about if it is not an actual line on a shirt. Thank you for all of the research and delivery!
One of your most profound videos. Especially the artist in me appreciates these tips. Thank you Kay!
I’m always careful not to have a line at my widest part. I’m pear shaped so my lower hip is my widest park. I have to be careful where my jackets end. They either have to be above my low hip or below. Thanks for the tips.
Years and years ago, an image consultant said to pair the color of your bottom or skirt with either the third piece/topper/jacket OR with the blouse/T-shirt/sweater so you have a continuous line from bottom to shoulder on the inside or outside track.
"Will make legs look too long". Legs can never look too long 😉
I have found that in doing the front tuck I'm able to wear tops that didn't work for me before, from my own closet! I love it!
Thanks so much. I am currently on a weight loss journey and I am lucky enough to be able to sew. I took in my t-shirts but now realize I should also shorten them. I’m only 5’3”. I also have light grey corduroy pants and light tan boots that I’m going to try together.
The intensity thing makes sense. If only I could translate that when I am shopping my closet! Thank you for your encouragement, Kay. This was ANOTHER well done video. We are learning so much from you. Thank you.
Great job, Kay! That's a complicated topic and you did a really good job. Lots to think about for sure! I'll probably go back and watch it again.
Now I know why I have lots of clothes in my closet and nothing to wear. I’m buying a lot of different colours that look good on me, shades of blues and greens, but I’m having trouble making outfits cause the shades don’t coordinate together. I love your videos, they inspire me so much, I write notes with your tips , but I still wonder what to wear each day. Maybe I need to invest in neutrals. My husband says I should take pics of every outfit and put them in an album so I can refer to it each morning. Not a bad idea lol.
Now THAT'S a helpful hubby ! 😁
Excellent- thought provoking…
As I’ve been changing my wardrobe to include dresses ( every day) I see what you’re saying is 💯 spot on…
May God bless and guide us as we serve Him in our wholesome prudent and modest dress…
Blessed be the name of the Lord 🙏🏻💕😊
Well, you are AMAZING! You lost me at “advanced math” but brought me right back again with Tip 1. You have taught us so much, I couldn’t believe you had THIS much more to teach (!), but I always learn so much. I concentrated hard and took extensive notes, but now I can’t stop thinking about the Second Coming. I sure am not ready to be judged - but I am so looking forward to getting rid of short pants. Thank you for such a great video!!!!
🤣
This will help me. As soon as I figure out what intensity I am. I think I’m medium now. My hair is still kind of dark, my eyes are hazel, and my skin is medium. Right now it’s a lot lighter than in the summer. Right now, I’m wearing a red Ohio State shirt, that’s big. And some gray sweatpants. I’m staying home and getting something done. After watching videos. I get the intensity. And the lines. I’m going to try and make better outfits now. But only if I go out in public. When I’m at home, and it’s just the dogs here. I don’t really care what I look like. I know I probably shouldn’t feel that way. But it’s just who I am.
OH - IO go Buckeye!!!
Such a great video. Since I’m only 4’10” and have a long torso and short legs I often have to do the two thirds on top and one third on bottom. I also do the same color top as bottom often.
Thank you Kay! Great refreshers and especially enjoyed the teaching about lines!
I am so glad that you speak about low contrast! My colouring is low contrast: light skin, light brown eyes, mousy hair (with highlights). I truly cannot wear hight contrast outfits because it makes my face and person sort of invisible. You mentioned this topic previously and I always found it helpful. It was a big game changer for me to understand this concept!
Great video Kaye & it all makes sense to me... Happy to hear tunics are out. They did nothing for me. I look best in tops that come to the waist or just below...I love ankle pants especially in the summer. A little longer in the winter months...Hope you have a great week. Take care. ❤🌹
This makes sense. Just did an online color analysis and got medium intensity warm. No idea what it meant before this.
Nice job, Kay. This is making more sense to me. I've heard about the 2/3 and 1/3 proportion, but the intensity levels are a new concept. I will start paying more attention to it.
Thank you, Kay, for your intense work in researching and presenting all that you do. This is an outstanding lesson.
This is one of your bests videos by far. All of your information is so helpfull and easy to apply to my own wardrobe. I totally get what your talking about with the lines. Hopefully I will be able to apply this better going forward. Thank you for all you do . Many blessings dear lady.
Thanks for all the guide lines. Haha.. I never thought of styling outfits in this way.
Thank you for reviewing these subjects again. I am trying to have this info really sink in for me so I do not have to over-think it every time I get dressed. I agree with you on the importance of these principles.
I am high intensity but I find that I often prefer low intensity items to put together. Am I making a mistake? I like a contrast pop of color, but I also like all neutrals.
Thank you Kaye, this was a lightbulb moment for me. Great video
I think that most longer cardigans look best with shoulder pads.
I appreciate all of the work you put into your videos! It helps women like me who just want to look put together at our age without thinking too long and hard about it.😂Thank you!!
A great video! Thanks. I'm going to look at my closet and find "outfits" that I haven't thought about as outfits!
This was an excellent video! Thanks, one of your best.
Well done! 👏I sometimes also get Shirts tailored. Especially for petite persons tailoring can create much better proportions when we think about horizontal lines.
This video was a life changer. I now totally understand why I need to tuck my tops. Thank you so, so much for such as informative video. Well presented and helpful. I will definitely need to watch a second time.
Well articulated Kay, thanks so much!!
Whoa! This is definitely worth watching twice and I did. Thanks for these tips! I love everything you said. I am going to take a second look at myself and try to follow this.
Awesome point! I need to check my essentials. Thanks a bunch!!!
Yay! When Jesus comes back I just might be wearing ankle length pants! 😍😍😍
Your hair looks so good! The style makes you look younger. Yes, it is so important to create those lines. I don't think we even consider it but we will learn it.
Bravo Kay! You totally nailed it! I love how you are able to explain the foundational principles of dressing attractively. This is what every woman needs to know whether she spends a lot or a little on her wardrobe. I am 59, super petite at 5’0” (standing up straight of course 😉) and watching your video I finally realized why it is that I think so many outfits just aren’t flattering to me and why I am so particular about the length of my tops! Great job as always - love your style and your videos!!!! ❤
More and more, I’m drawn to monochromatic pants, shoes and tops with a contrasting jacket, sweater or handbag.
Thanks Kay. I always learn something from your videos.
Very enlightening! This gives me a few more things to look at when choose an outfit. Thanks Kaye!
Great job! This video is packed with relevant, useful information that is immediately applicable to everyday life. Your content just keeps on getting stronger. Thanks!
At 5’2” I find those “lines” to be extremely important! Fit is everything for me. There are few places to find petite sizes within my budget nowadays. Thank goodness for Talbots sales! I sew many of my clothes for a better fit but sweaters I purchase. I found this video to be so helpful in making sure I have enough basics for a cohesive wardrobe.
I absolutely agree with you! I’m also 5’2” and sew most of my wardrobe for a better fit. I learned about the 1/3, 2/3 proportions years ago and it makes so much sense.
Love this video. I have learned so much from you, Kay. Especially about color and fit.
I love the front tuck and ankle pants. I think the ankle is such an attractive part of a woman's body. Why not show it off!
Thank you for all your hard work. 💅👗👠💄
Wow! This was fabulous. Thank you for covering these topics in this way. I think I understand … hoping I can make it work from my own closet. And thanks for saying what you did at the end about that, knowing even you struggle at times helps me understand that it’s ok to feel a little lost with how to apply the strategy, but to keep trying. Thank you, Kay, for being such a great teacher and encourager!
Kay, I am wondering if you have done a makeup application video. Your look is so beautiful and I long to have your look. I am 68 yo and have allowed my natural hair color (Now salt & pepper) to come in and my hair length is about the same as yours. Thank you for all you do here on CZcams. Great advise.
Learned several new concepts from this video. Now to put them into practice. Thanks!
I am learning so much! Very confusing all this info- but important.
Keep the videos coming!
Thank you thank you thank you for this video! I like all of them but this has been so helpful to me as I am struggling so much with my outfits and now I can't wait to try some!!
Alright then, I’ve been listening to your videos on this topic whenever available. This time, something clicked and I might have it! I have white hair, ivory complexion with dark brown eyes and eyebrows. Hmmm, high contrast in low intensity??
Excellent video - thank you so much! I do need to watch this video again and check out my closet to see how to make the best use of it now. A factor you didn't mention is having a large bust and the effect on the rest of the silhouette; I struggle with that because the rest of me is slim. I always come away from your video with good ideas
Front tucking is a tool, not a trend. That said, I wear my tops longer than a crop, but shorter than a tunic because of stomach issues. The last thing I need is attention drawn to my middle. Head to toe monochromatic or mono intensity outfits really help.
You did an amazing job of explaining with helpful illustrations. It makes sense to me.
Would love some tips for plus style too.
So helpful!💝
Advanced math isn't in my wheelhouse, either! Great video Kay. I would love a video on styling your hair. Mine is almost the same length and I like how yours is tousled.
Thank you, always enjoy your videos!!
I think instead of showing videos where are you buying and buying more? I think videos on how to put together your outfits in your closet is a much better idea. I am retired at 68 and I don’t want to buy things all the time .I have a classic minimal wardrobe I just need outfit ideas which I get on Pinterest and videos like yours .I don’t like all the halls because it makes everyone want to rush out and buy things. I don’t need any more clothes.😊 Thank you, great video!
Great video Kay! Very helpful!
This is brilliant! Many, many thanks for affirming what I seem to have known intuitively
A couple of years ago, I realized that I need to wear petite tops because Im short waisted
with long legs. I always thought "petite" meant tiny. And Im not. Its been a game changer for me!
Same here. Petite tops make all the difference.
Here's the problem I see. In trying to create the 1/3 top-2/3 bottom, women's tops usually create a line around the hips. That line makes hips look bigger thereby throwing body shape proportions off. Wearing a vest or overshirt seems like a "must" if you don't want a big hip look unless you wear a color column.
Agree - if only they would make more tops that were higher on the sides (sort of like shirttail) we could avoid the straight line across the hips.
It seems weird, I know, but you can tuck your top in so that it’s shorter in front (creating ‘longer legs’ visually), or shorter on the sides (a similar effect). Just tuck in all the way around and then pull out the sides or middle. I was skeptical but it works!
Yes the tuck works sometimes but doesn't work with all bottoms. 😊
Very helpful. Thanks so much!!💕
I learned a lot from that video Kay, I will heading to my closet tomorrow to see what I can create. Thank you 😊
I’m going to review this several times as there is so much useful information contained in this video!
Great instructions!
The examples really helped to illustrate these tricky concepts. Thank you!
Thanks, this was really helpful!
Really helpful thankyou Kay 😊
Great advice and very interesting - especially the concept of intensity, which I hadn't really thought about but explains a lot
Thank you so much for this perfect explanation of how to use lines and contrast to create a well put together wardrobe!!
Wow, Kaye, great video. You did really well explaining those ideas about lines and contrasts. I’ll definitely have a look at your other videos as this is really interesting. I was a bright redhead and always relied on my hair to give that pop of colour. Now that it’s fading, I’m needing to work harder at that. Love, love, love that red lip you’re wearing by the way!
Wow, Kay this is the best! I've never heard of the lines concept but it makes so much sense! Thanks!!!
Great video content. Will definitely need to re-watch this one.
Thank you, this makes so much sense. It explains why I don’t feel right in contrasting colours and tones. This is one of the most helpful tips I’ve seen on CZcams recently. X
Good ideas!
Super helpful! Thanks so much. Also do you have a video on how to create a winter capsule wardrobe? I’m in Canada and we already have snow and my wardrobe is in desperate need of an overhaul but I’m scared to go shopping without a plan. I have typically been one of those people who see an outfit I like on a mannequin but then have troubles putting outfits together from my closet. I definitely need essentials but would love your suggestions on what to include. Thanks!
This was super helpful. You shared some great food for thought. Now I’m understanding why so many things in my wardrobe don’t look the way I want them to on me.
Your information helps to have an idea of a formula. This help’s explains why outfits look good or bad.
Thank you, great tips und a great video 🌻🙂
Excellent content, and lots of food for thought!
Bravo, Kay! Thanks once again for helping me improve my wardrobe choices. I’ve got a bit of work to do, but I know my direction.
Great video! I am working on making different outfits with what I have!
Thanks so much Kay for this wonderful video. Thanks for all the effort you put in. I have learned a lot from you, more so than from any other fashion blogger!! ❤❤❤❤
Amazing video; thank you so much; really appreciate all the tips!❣️
Sweetheart, Kay, thank you, for this informative video.
I am absorbing some information, but I need to watch this video again, for somewhere I missed some information.
Thank you, for understanding us for watching it again.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful and very enlightening.
God bless you, and you r truly amazing. 🙏😘👍❤️✝️💫🍂🧡✨🌟🍁
I'm short - 5'1" - with long legs and a very short torso, so I try never to tuck a top in as it accentuates how short it is, but trying to find a sweater that I can leave untucked, without it being too long, is nearly impossible. Even those that say "cropped" are often too long. The most flattering hemline is the shirttail - high on the sides, lower on the front. This idea of intensity etc. is very helpful - and since my hair turned white explains why I look so washed out in things that used to look fine when I was a redhead!
A slight side tuck can help with this.
Thank you, Kay, for all your research and the clear way you present valuable information. You are not only stylish, but have the gift of teaching. This video is another keeper that I will save and watch again. Is it only me that cannot see the shoes of the outfits you show on the inserts?
Hmm. You should be able to see the shoes. What are you watching on ? I’m glad you enjoyed the video. 🥰
I don't mind the front tuck, but what is up with the crazy look of one side of a button up shirt tucked in and one side untucked? Ankle pants are okay, but all styles come and go. It's how the fashion industry keeps making money. Your tips about contrast and the 1/3-2/3 look are spot on.
This was excellent! It opened my eyes to many fashion tendencies that I did know to consider and incorporate into my outfits and some which I shouldn’t do anymore! Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for the helpful information.
This video does make sense. I purchased an ivory corduroy jacket that I have barely worn, because I just couldn’t figure out how to style it. Now, thanks to you, I know what I was doing wrong and how to correct it. I can’t wait to try it out, since the rainy weather here is perfect for corduroy.
I’m also knitting a sweater from the neck down and have to determine the length. Before watching this I would have made it longer. Now I’ll stop the ribbing so it sits just over the top of my jeans. I’m subscribed and saved the video ❤ looking forward to watching more of your videos.
