Thanks again to Ritual for sponsoring this video! I love their vitamins because I can easily swallow them. Remember to use my code DRESSED20 for 20% off during your first month! www.ritual.com/DRESSED20
You mentioned a Vneck makes the shoulders look wider but I don’t see that. I have wider shoulders and a v neck seems to break that visual. A square neck or any wider neck seems to accentuate the shoulders.
Thanks for explaining. This makes so much sense! I've been confused because most of my life I was a straight-up hourglass based on measurements and I dressed accordingly. However perimenopause and ankle injury caused me to gain weight which threw off the proportions. I had been told I had become a rectangle as a result. But my shoulder and hip stay the same. The weight went on the front of me.
Yes! I am a straight-on rectangle until I turn to my profile--then I'm sort of an oval....
That was great information Kay! Thank you for explaining it so well.
Your instructions on finding your personal measurements has been eye opening! Thank you so much!
This was the best information on body typing for dressing purposes I have ever come across and thank you soooo much for sharing your insight. I look forward to listening to more of your videos!
Great information Kay. I appreciate the research you did, and more importantly, your ability to communicate it to us. Nice job!👍
Thank you, Kay for this great video, and caring for us and what we wear. God bless!
You never disappoint! One reason why I enjoy your videos is your current/updated information and take on things and pertinent way to implement it in our unique lives💚
Such a useful video. Years ago I attended a class that had us outline each others full body shape, which was very telling. I truly had no understanding of what mine looked like! Over time, and with age and weight gain, I'm sure mine has changed, but I will use your method to check it once again and adjust dressing where necessary. Thank you!
What a great informative video on body shapes. I can't wait to try the measuring system you presented.
Thank you, I have been very frustrated with trying to determine my shape and this is so clear and concise and makes sense!
This video is so interesting I've never heard of body shaping being found like this! But not does it work & make life a lot easier 😀 Thank you Kay for your great knowledge & the way you share x God bless you 🙏
Good Morning Kay
Wow! Great info! i learned so much today.
Good information, as always, Kay. Thanks!
Fascinating and so useful. Thanks, Kay!
This was a great video, Kay! I know a lot of people think an hourglass has to have a very tiny waist, and a much larger bust and hips. I'm a trim hourglass like you, with my shoulders and hips the same width. The Talbots size chart puts me at a size 10 for my bust and hips, and an 8 for my waist, though. Finding pants and skirts can be frustrating. I usually look for ones that are looser around the hips, and just buy the smaller size for my waist.
Great info. Thanks so much. Your visual explanations were excellent. I will save your info for future use. Nice to have visuals , as sometimes hard to picture using words!
Superb video, Kay! I am going to watch it again when I can use a measuring tape to determine my shape. Thank you!
Such a great video! When I was in a costume design class at Baylor many, many years ago we had to wear a skin fitting leotard and draw an outline of our body! This sounds like an easier way to do it! Thank you!
Excellent video Kay!
This is an excellent video, Kay, thank you! 😊🙏
So informative and helpful! Thank you!
I think this the clearest discussion of body shape I've ever watched.
This was the best explanation of body shape I've ever seen in my whole life. Excellent!
Lol! Thank you. I’m glad it was helpful. 💕
Thanks Kay for a different perspective on the Pear shape. I love the thought of being a triangle instead of a pear. Thanks to my grandfather, all the ladies in our household have hips! I can’t wait to get my yarn out and see if that still holds true for my post menopausal body shape at 63! I love the camel trousers you were wearing with the white button up shirt and black blazer. I did not see them in your shopping widget and I’m hoping you can tell me where they are from. They are so flattering. Enjoy your time off with your family! It’s so wonderful when the kids come around. We will look forward to seeing you when you get back to work, whenever that may be. Just enjoy yourself, work will still be there later.
Hi Jan. The pants are from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and have returned to full price unfortunately. I thought they had sold out so I didn't link them. But they do have them in limited sizes. I'm actually featuring them in next week's video with styling tips. shopstyle.it/l/bJ1sT
Hi Kay , love your videos. I have known since I outgrew the junior dept that I was a pear shape. Short waist , small waist and larger hips. Thank God for separates. Never have been able to wear dresses without tailoring. Agree with you on all the suggestions for dressing my shape. Thank you 😊.
Same here. Size small tops, large bottoms.
Great job with this video! Very helpful.
Great advice Kay. I'm learning how to age gracefully. Thank you.♥️♥️
This was brilliant! All this time I thought I was a rectangle, but after determining that I don’t have a defined waist, I learned I’m an oval. Makes so much sense - thank you! That said, would I be one of the few body types that should stay away from wrap dresses? Trying to decide if the diagonal neckline is flattering or not. . .
Kay - this was my favorite video so far. You always make me smile. Thank you for all the helpful information. Best Regards, LRM
You’re so welcome. Thanks for letting me know that you liked it. 😊
Thank you Kay!!
A few weeks ago a few people commented that I have an hourglass figure. I went away thinking, “WHAT”? I always assumed that I had a straight-ish figure.
Well, I watched your video and did the string test, Kay. And guess what. I AM AN HOURGLASS! This has totally blown my mind. I can’t believe that I’m 68 and just now realizing this.
I think there’s a few reasons why I never considered myself an hourglass. 1. As a teen and beyond the fashion industry/magazines have encountered all of us to do whatever it took to dress to “look” as long and lean as possible regardless of one’s actual figure. 2. Curves seemed “out”, matronly and maybe too sexy. 3. I tend to run a bit short waisted so that always threw me off some as to what my actual figure was.
I’m going to sort through my clothes and get rid of the things that I’m not enjoying wearing. Now I know why! Thanks so much, Kay!!
Have a wonderful NEW YEARS EVE AND DAY. Rest up and I’ll see you soon in 2023.
Very good advice. Thank you!
Hi I wanted to drop a note to say thank you. I have just found your channel and I am grateful. I always thought I am an apple apparently not I'm a rectangle H which explains why I have been getting things wrong. I am looking forward to the new journey with you from here in the UK. Thanks Kay
I’m so glad this was helpful. Thanks for letting me know. 😊
Good morning, sweetheart Kay and thank u.
Thank u , so much for caring enough, to share and enlighten us.
Great information and very valuable tools on how to dress up.
God bless u, and have a great day. 🙏🥰👍👏🌹🌟❤️✝️
Thanks so much for clarifying why my bust, waist, hip measurements weren’t really getting to my actual body shape. Based on these measurements, I would be classified as hourglass, but I have very narrow shoulders compared to my hips (I’m really large-busted). I’m actually a triangle.
Loved this
THANKS FOR A REVOLUTIONARY WAY OF LOOKING AT MY BODY SHAPE!
I took a course too, possibly the same one. It was not fun. I was diagnosed as a pear. Turns out I'm hourglass like I thought. Appreciate your explanation, so much easier.
Thank you so much for this information. Believe it or not I’ve been dressing correctly for my body type and I didn’t even know it. Ha ha
Perfectly clear😊
I’m a rectangle, so if I need a belt to give shape to a dress, for example, I often choose one that is the same color as the dress, to eliminate that high contrast and horizontal emphasis that a contrasting-color belt would give. I have all my neutral and basic color (navy, khaki green, burgundy, etc.) colors in quality belts acquired over the decades, they are very useful. I like belts, they are fun accessories, and sometimes do wear contrasting-color ones, too, depending on the effect I want. I try to plan outfits that don’t need belts if I’m going to be sitting all day, though, they can become uncomfortable after a while.
I too am a rectangle. Regardless of width belts make my waist larger, however, I’ll take your advice to use matching colors.
Great description
Such a good idea - looking from the front. For some of us measuring around the hips can throw things off if you have a really large "derriere"
Thanks for explaining 😄
Christine here from England brilliant video, never understand body shapes but do now xx

Me too. I was probably an hourglass but now almost a rectangle. So how do I dress… hourglass or rectangle? 🤔
Great information Kay. I probably am a triangle (formerly a pear, lol). But I am going to get my yarn and see what it says 😉
Using the bust measurement, instead of the shoulder measurement, is a very common mistake in determining body shape, which is based on the skeletal structure, not the overlying flesh. Of course, knowing one’s bust size is critical for choosing clothes and styling, but any body shape can have flat or very large busts, and any size in between, it’s not determinative of frame shape. Before and during menopause, I watched my former hourglass shape change into a rectangle as my waist thickened, but nothing else did. It makes it difficult to find clothes that fit well. I get nagged about my unhealthy waist:hip ratio, but even when I disastrously lost half my body weight because of serious illness, it didn’t change one bit, I still had the exact same ratio, but was just emaciated all over.
One if the best explanations l've heard for assessing your body shape, thank you 🙏 Great tips for how to dress each shape too. You provide lots of really good advice. l've always been very slim which makes dressing difficult as l have a small bust too. l'm hourglsss but can easily look swamped in the oversized styles, other women think it's easy but it's not! xx 🙏❤️
U r an incredible resource
Great job explaining the body shapes and what to wear for them!
I too am not a fan of the fruit analogy because we don't look like fruit! I could never figure out what fruit I was supposed to be!😂😂
But I know I'm am hourglass😁
Wonderful! Thanks so much for watching. 😊
This was so helpful and reassuring for me about my tummy! I have a waist!!! Thank you so much, you are a really nice lady!
Measuring shoulders makes a huge difference. ❤️
Indeed. Thanks so much for watching. 💕
Thnx for sharing your valuable knowledge n enlightening us Kay🤩..
Belt is not always the ans for ppl who hv protruding belly n undefined waist..if this person wears belt just below the breast though she vl get waist definition bt d belly part vl b more enhanced (depending on d curves or protrusion of belly she has)
Yes u cn wear belt on ur jeans etc so dt ur jeans doesn't start sliding dwn while u r walking😁..(just sharing from my experience)
Am yet to figure out where should be d placemnt of frills in a peplum top so that it flaunts ur body shape rather than mking you luk bulkier🙃
Living in India doesn't allow me to wear jkts or blazers all year round to give vertical illusion n hide d belly n belt🙃
Stay Blessed Stay Happy Always 🥰😘🤗🧚♀️🦄🌈🧿
This was very helpful. I have been confused by my side view… I.e. abdominal weight gain during menopause. I couldn’t figure out if that changed my basic shape or not but it sounds like it’s irrelevant.
Great video and explanation of shapes. I am a rectangle shape, but my greatest challenge is that I am 5' 8" but very short waisted and long legged! I never feel comfortable in a belt. I would love to have you address this sometime as I have so much trouble with looking proportional.
I can work on that. 😊 Thanks for watching.
My problem too, but I’m only 5’2”.
Me too
I have lots and lots of clothes, Closets full. How do I narrow things done. I love everything, or I always think I’m gonna need it later. I’m constantly buying clothes. I’m embarrassed.
I’ve retired and I still buy clothes. Do you have videos to help my problem?? Do you have some suggestions.
When you summarized, you didn’t talk about the oval. I’ve always been told I was an hourglass, but my underbust is significantly smaller than my waist.
Thank you for this video! I was wondering if my shoulders are 2inches smaller than my hips if that would make me a pear shape?
Yes, or at least a triangle. 😊
Hey Kay, do you have a link to the light, white jacket you wear in the intro? Thanks for the video.
Yes I do! But it's not available in white anymore. bit.ly/3m7davC

I was unable to find the post for the hour glass shape. The link that said hour glass shape was for oval. There were two links leading to oval shape.

I used to be an hourglass before I started taking the medication I have to take. They make me eat more. I still have a waist. But I also have a lot of flab. Perhaps, I should exercise. Because steroids are not my friend. I will probably go off them again. And I will lose the weight. Then when I go back on I will gain weight again. It’s a vicious circle with me. And my body that isn’t working so good. I’m going to measure and see what I am. I’m guessing I’m an inverted triangle. But I could be an oval. I don’t really wear dresses. I do have some. I don’t wear them very often. My life is too casual. And I like it that way.
I’m a rectangle always have been even when I looked like twiggy.
If shoulder width and hip width is the same with waist being 4 inches less wide would that be an hourglass? I always thought I was a rectangle because I’m tall and thin. I always thought hourglass meant curvy and voluptuous
How much of a difference in inches from Shoulders to hips makes you a pear shape? I find different options.
I always think I was a rectangle body shape now I think I’m a hourglass figure .. but the number in the was doesn’t match the hourglass but I have a small button can I still be a hourglass still..
Hi Kay! I know you are so busy and I enjoy the variety of videos you share -quick question 🙋♀️ , did you mention a shape like an oval? I can trouble deciding between a rectangle or an apple. What should I look for to help me decide?
For the oval shaped woman the visual waistline - looking straight forward - will extend out past her hips and shoulders. For the rectangle, she doesn't have a defined waist, but it doesn't extend past her shoulders and hips. She's more even across the shoulders, waist and hips.
Thanks Kay!!! I'm trying to help a friend with her style and I know I need to put her in leggings and a tight top and take that picture.
I think because I'm conscious of my protruding stomach in front I may be thinking I'm the wrong shape. I think I'm an hourglass if you look at me full front.
I have a defined waist line BUT I needed to add inches to get the tape from my bossom to my natural waist line BECAUSE of my belly....
You are amazing. I would love for you to stop by and see my shape. I was told I am an hour glass. I can see curves when I look in the mirror. But when I plug my measurements in I am a rectangle. I love your videos learning so much. I am a christian too.
Thanks. Then you are not a rectangle. You are an hourglass if you’re seeing curves. 😉
@@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms ok thank you🙂
What about O or apple shape?
Yes. An 0 shape would be an apple or oval.
Great video, question for you- my shoulders and hips are pretty well the same, I have a defined waist about 9inches smaller, however straight on I look more like an I...does that mean I can dress both shapes?
That actually means you are indeed an I. Remember, your body shape is not about circumference measurements; it’s about the shape you are, as you say, straight on. So you will need to use a few tricks to create the visual appearance of a define waist.
@@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms thank you:)

Fat soluble vitamins are not absorbed on an empty stomach; just an FYI… thanks for this video 🤗🦋
This is from the Ritual website: Delayed-release capsules are designed to dissolve in the small intestine, an ideal place to absorb nutrients.
What about a large bust?
The link for the Hourglass Shape is the Oval Shape.
I used to be hourglass all my life . But since I got through menopause I obtained a tummy. I cannot decide where I belong .Am I an oval now ?
My guess is you probably still are.... I went to buy Jean's and the clerk told me that I still was an hourglass underneath my extra weight....
The way I know that we are this shape..... when we lose weight.... the boobs are the last thing to shrink....
I'm the only girl at my little gym who didn't have her boobs disappear when we lost weight....🔎😬🤣🥰🤣🤣🤸♀️💃😍
Hi Kay, I appreciate this info so much. So I don't have a defined waist. My test with the tape measure seemed to be exactly the same under the breasts and then moving down to my waist. But my hips are definitely much wider than my shoulder bones. I am very small-boned and slender. Would I still be a rectangle if my hips are wider than my shoulders?
Hopefully Kay has a good answer. That sounds to me like you are a triangle/pear. The key is to balance the width of the shoulders with the width of the hips. So dark bottoms and light or bright colored tops or horizontal stripes on top, boat neck, puffed sleeves, ruffled neck etc. Those will help create a defined waste as well
HI Kay I do not have a defined waist. My collar bone, under my bust and when I move my tape down to my true waist is all about the same. Then my hips are wider by about 5 inches. Does this mean I have a triangle body? I thought I had a pear shape. Is this the same, Pear and triangle. I am more confused. I am short and not tall. I want to get this right. HelpSo glad Abigail, Andrew and Daniel are coming for a visit. Have fun!
It’s important to stand with the feet together when making these analyses.
I always thought I knew what the hourglass shape was. Now I am confused, since you said you were an hourglass.
Great tips! If only my side view were as good to look at as my front view. Lots of curves w a belly & booty. Oh well, it is what it is and like you I’m quite happy to be a woman, curves and all. Blessings.

I’m an hour glass with a tiny rib cage.
O is oval?
You look more like a slim triangle than an hourglass, mostly because of width at your thighs and a smaller chest. An hourglass has a larger bust and smaller waist.
Are you aware that vitamins are better absorbed by your body when taken with a meal?
I appreciate your advice and content.
I disagree on these points. If you're overweight it can be harder to tell your shape.
Classic hourglass has an ample bust and hips that are equal in measurement. Prior to having babies I was a size 12 ish and 34DD....
I'm 50 and though my waist is congested.... lol... I'm still an hourglass underneath. Only 8 to 10% of women are true HOURGLASS figures.
You are trim and lovely... but your small bustline screams to me ... pear/ triangle shape.
Just my opinion.
Btw, most female clothes are suitable for your shape or apple....
If you're busty and have curvy thighs..... it's SURE HARD TO SHOP for clothes.
I usually size up and alter them best I can.

You have some very valid points ! Also , there are many other variables in finding clothes that fit well , are proportioned for one's unique body & lastly , are flattering . Wide or narrow shoulders ? Bust size ? Short or long torso and/or inseam ? Some have a " saggy " booty , others very round . Tummy bulge w/ flat butt or vice versa ? Thighs , calves , cankles - oh my ! There's no magic formula or size chart - heaven help us all find our " happy place " ! ❤ Meanwhile , love my yoga pants & " Life Is Good " tees wardrobe .
