  • Over 150 Americans die every day from overdoses related to fentanyl and synthetic opioids. Here’s why fentanyl is so deadly.
    RELATED: RSV, flu, COVID-19 are rising in children. Is this a 'tripledemic’? | JUST THE FAQS bit.ly/3fKT7DR
    Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that we use to treat cases of severe pain. It has a prominent role in pain management of cancer patients, in particular. It can be given intravenously and is also prescribed as a lozenge, tablet, spray or transdermal patch. The danger of fentanyl is its potency.
    The rate of overdose deaths involving fentanyl increased 56% from 2019 to 2020, according to the most recent data available. There have been multiple reports of police officers claiming to have suffered an accidental dangerous overdose from fentanyl because their skin came into contact with fentanyl powder that was found when they responded to an emergency call. In addition, the TV show "Blue Bloods" aired an episode in 2017 in which a police officer overdosed after touching a tray containing fentanyl.
    You cannot overdose on illicit fentanyl thru skin contact. While medical grade formulations of fentanyl include patches, illicit fentanyl cannot be absorbed by the skin. In fact, pharmaceutical companies spent millions of dollars and years of research developing the proper formula for a medical-grade fentanyl patch because it's so difficult to deliver the effects of fentanyl via the skin.

      My condolences, i just lost my nephew to an overdose a couple weeks ago, he was 23yrs young! I wish this was just a nightmare i could wake up from instead of a cold empty reality i must learn to live with. My brother and sisters all live in the same town so all of our kids grew up together. It feels like i lost one of my own, all my neices and nephews have a special place in my heart. I held that boy in my arms when he was a newborn, I helped change his diapers, saw him start to take his first steps, say his first words and he left this world before me. Still feels so unreal...

      @@squiremuldoon5462 please don’t I attempted before and the look on my sisters face when she found me was horrible and my life eventually got a little smoother in the areas that were bothering me the most time changes shit somehow, now I look at all the good things I’ve had happen or experienced since that day and I realize that I would have missed every part of it and couldn’t fix what I had done. Then I saw my loved ones at my funeral and realized it’s just my job to keep going until my time has ran out and knowing this helped me somehow bc now I give less fucks bc really none of this extra shit matters what matters is you. You have to love you and yeah everyone says that but I get it now. I’m not saying I don’t have days that it still comes to my mind but I fight it with these thoughts and feelings bc I know that I’m not living for these people or this society or even money I’m living just to exist on earth and I just hope I can make a good mark in someone’s life at least once. I want people to speak good of me when I pass bc I was a kind person. I live for the good. The nature and animals. The sky and waters. The beauty of natural and I love all the people but they are really the problem with everything so I don’t live for people other than I don’t want to leave the ones who love me with broken hearts, bc I’d feel mean for that. But life is like a boat you may be on a rink a dink canoe sitting in your own piss bc you can’t get out with the water slamming you into everything you need to pass but further down that river you will find spots that are calm and even though your trapped in piss you still get to feel and see beauty around you. And who knows maybe you’ll be able to get out of that canoe and into a boat or just out onto the land. Time is amazing when you’re not counting it. Times also sad, bc things do change, but things change with time.

    • @chionophilaine
      @chionophilaine Před rokem +2

      Depending on the surgery you have, they will prescribe you different pain medications. The usual is Paracetamol (very effective given through IV) unless you have an underlying liver condition then they might consider giving you a titrated dose. Also depending on how big your surgery is, you will have the usual morphine or oxycodone (renal function would be considered too). Some patients have really big surgeries so they end up with epidurals (given through the spine), or some local anaesthesia in the form of a rectus sheath (if it’s an abdominal surgery), or something we call a PCA or a Patient-Controlled-Analgesia which is a machine that gives you small boluses of either Morphine or Oxycodone, but you are the one pressing the button each time to administer your own dose of pain relief. If you have this kind of pain medications post-op, you will be stepped down to a critical care area post surgery and you will be monitored very closely. One of the things they will want to focus on is the pain control, so you can start early on your rehab and deep breathing and coughing exercises, which will help you recover faster. All your medications will be reviewed daily and consistently, how much you are using, how much pain control you have, your vital signs, etc. Everything will be taken into consideration; e.g., you’re having too much opioids and it’s affecting your breathing so they will switch stuff around for safety and efficacy.
      I’m a critical care nurse and I work in the UK so I don’t know if the practice we have will be the exact same in other locations. Even here in the UK, different trusts across the country have variations in practice. If you have a lot of concerns, speak to your doctors and let them know prior to surgery so they could explain to you more in detail what’s going to happen and what you are supposed to expect. Hope that helps! Take care and stay positive! ❤

    • @DeeWeber
      @DeeWeber Před rokem

      Take what you need in the hospital because intense pain slows recovery. Talk to your all doctor about it, and go in and tell yr pharmacist too, if you know them. Each state has different laws about Drs and pharmacies that can get in the way if you aren't aware of them. I have found that a long slow taper after I've had surgery works best. 2-3 days after, I try to go low as I can for pain meds then see how it goes. I wish they made smaller, not larger doses. The long taper has worked each time for me. I think Vicodin and Morphine are better choices. I hate synthetics. Good luck!
