Ian James Corlett is the first voice I ever heard as Goku and I loved him!! He was incredible. He doesn’t get enough credit. Sean Schemmel is great too!! Both are amazing voice actors.

Kinda funny cause the time I grew up in Ian James Corlett was the most iconic because of his portrayal of goku at the over 9000 part and all of snake way. Even the tree of might movie. Then it got pretty cool when we got rolfs voice actor. We had to watch Corlett and Kelamis for 2 to 3 years in elementary. It felt like an eternity waiting for that many grades and seeing the arrival of raditz probably 100 times all the way to ginyu. By the summer 99 the frieza saga was slowly coming out because people couldn't decide if DBZ should be on fox or cartoon network. Fox was a little ahead I remember. But we got these two crummy new voice actors for goku and vegeta. The vegeta one particularly sucked. The goku one delivered lines so awkwardly and the music was kinda quieter. We all noticed it, after all anime was the fad then. Just turns out it became Schemmel and Sabat. Now I can't watch those few episodes at the end of ginyu without hearing their worst performance everyone talked about all that time ago. It's the ICONIC part. lol. I like that schemmel played goku for the rest of the show. After the training at 100 times gravity there was something mysterious about goku, where he didn't have to seem as serious or focused as if he was a super natural force. Any time I watch the first two sagas with Schemmel I feel he is out of place because that goku was a lot more serious. The goku Krillin says they left on Earth. He was a different goku from then on. but Iconic will always be Corlett and Kelamis and Schemmels horrible original proformance lol.
Sean Schemmel was actually hired to re voice all those in dragon ball z kai because he had already did most of goku's voice and everyone liked him the best, also it was so the voice matched all the way threw the series. I guess that's why i liked dragon ball z kai so much. also Schemmel never had a horrible performance as you say, its my opinion that Ian James Corlett was one of the worst goku voices ever not even close man hence why they got rid of him rather quickly because his voice was so not engaging.
It's honestly probably just your age. The rest was made up or your opinion stretched to everyone. I know they made him do a redub and kai. That was just because Funimation could do it for money. It had nothing to do with anyone liking him best. Ian actually quit, they didn't get rid of him. Then Peter took over until two years passed and they didn't have enough money to recast him so they chose Sean. At the time his performance was bad, he was imitating Peter and Ian. So if you say Ian sucks you kinda in a way say that Sean sucks. You really have no idea what you are talking about. This is why I hate the Internet's effect on society. Now people are informed ignorant.
Sean Schemmel is the most iconic and recognizable for me. As soon as I heard his voice I imagined Goku. The others, just don’t hit the mark. It’s as if Sean’s voice was the true voice of a hero and father. For some reason it just embodies everything I feel goku is.
Goku really isn't a hero though. His genetic need to fight stronger and stronger opponents put earth and even the universe at extreme risk of being wiped out.
Sean schemmel fits funimation’s version of the character, Peter kelamis is TORIYAMA’s version of the character, with the clear similarity to Masako nozawa’s Goku.

Kirby brought a nice down to earth element to Goku's voice but I prefer Corlett the most, followed by Kelamis while Schemmel is my least favourite. I honestly can't stand the Funimation dub, I had to watch super subbed for the whole series.

Ian James Corlett is the one I grew up with, and I LOVE his Goku. But over time Sean Shemmel became the best. He’s amazing!
Finally, I scrolled down way too long to find someone else who likes Corlett's Goku. I even saw Kelamis and Kirby before Corlett and was starting to think I was the only one. I think Schemmel improved a lot by Kai, but he was not great early on.

Most of them sound like they are trying to be fantastic superheroes of powerful alien origin, but I always liked that Peter Kelamis sounded like a real person. He sounds the most relatable to me, as even being an alien, he still sounds just like a familiar Earthling, just like how Goku grew up on a similar Earth to ours... albeit with dinosaurs and talking animals.

Ian Corlett was my favorite voice character for Goku. Thats the voice I grew up with. I was very upset when they started changing their voices in the Ginyu force Saga, I was devastated. Ian was also the Goku I grew up with watching the Ocean Dub in the 90's, along with Brian Drummond as Vegeta. Man those two were awesome. I like Sean Schemmel and Chris Sabat but it took the full Frieza saga for me to get used to the change.

You do know Ian James Corlett only voiced Goku for the first 37 episodes right? They had to replace him with Peter Kelamis, who started out imitating him. Peter Kelamis was replaced by Sean Schemmel when Funimation ditched the Ocean dub voice cast. You grew up with both Ian and Peter’s Goku’s.

Ian, Peter, Kirby, and Sean all have their strengths and weaknesses. I think Ian, Peter, and Kirby have overall better voices when it comes to displaying Goku's emotions. When Sean tries to be funny or serious, it feels like he's trying too hard. Sean is definitely a better screamer than Ian, Peter, and Kirby. The 3 Ocean dub voices just don't really have the lung power, or they sound kinda silly. I can honestly go with any of these voices for Goku

Comparing him to Sean I think corletts voice has a slight more 'heroic' feel it which helps with emotional/tense sections of the anime Sean does a great but let's keep it real he makes Goku sound 'goofy' and he's not goofy all the time.
He is in super and that’s a fact that is not Sean’s fault it’s the anime x is pretty much peak he still makes goku sound cool
Goku was never portrayed as the “typical” hero. Hence why Sean Schemmel is perfect. You’re most definitely entitled to your opinion and no one can argue that. Overall mannerisms voice connection and consistency is Schemmel!

It's impossible for me to choose without seeming biased. I am so used to Goku portrayed by Sean that hearing other people saying Goku's lines sounds silly.
Sean does put more intensity in his voice, so that's a plus. The other choices all sound like they are just reading from the script.

I just listened to these other "Voice Comparison" videos with Vegeta and Piccolo.
I never heard of Scott McNeil's portrayal of Piccolo (I know DBZ through the "orange bricks") but I think he's *at least* on par with Sabat's portrayal. Probably better.
Now with Brian Drummond (Ocean dub?) for Vegeta, I don't think he's ultimately better but he does give a different perspective. In my opinion Vegeta is an evil prick who didn't become a good person until Kid Boo. Brian's voice is more true for a Vegeta that committed acts of genocide and a back-stabber. Sabat's voice seems to fit what Vegeta became later which I have a problem with.

DBZ is one anime I must absolutely watch in Japanese. Most anime's I prefer sub and dub the same though because the dub actually captures the sub's intentions therefore giving us the same experience.
The DBZ dub isn't even the same show as the Japanese original. It's far too inaccurate and dumbed down for little kids.

I lived in Germany during the 00s so I grew up with Kirby(only when i moved back to the states I started associating him with Miroku) but i think I remember Peter? We'd also get the tapes(which had Sean I think) and I remember tripping over how different the voices were.
I like Steve blum in almost all of his work but he can't play a perfect Goku. Sean Schemmel was just hands down the best candidate for the part.

Schemmel and Nozawa. They're the only true Gokus. Only they're voices fit the character of Goku. Schemmel is perfect one for the English dub and Nozawa is the perfect one for the Japanese version.

Sean Schemmel went from being heavily praised to heavily hated in such a short amount of time. It's even worse knowing he refused to let Ian James Corlett voice Goku Black. Sean is not a very nice person at all.
Why would Ian voice Black? Sure Sean may have overreacted but Goku Black is the original Goku's body. Not like Copy Vegeta who is an evil clone of Vegeta. That character made sense to get the Ocean dub voice actor for Vegeta in

@@Medachod true. But Brian Drummond was 'the' original English VA for Vegeta when Funimation DBZ started out. Chris Sabat replaced him when he left to work with Ocean. Its a good piece of nostalgia there. Whereas many English speaking people (as in USA and UK) grew up with Sean. But I understand your point
