Hi Trent and Allie, awesome job. Just for future reference on the hip beam with 2 different pitches.”Bastard Hip” as it’s called. The actual hip beam does not sit at the corner of the porch rack. It will actually sit off the corner post to the left side of the rack. It will allow the hip to plain out to both pitches. This will allow the overhang to be the same on both sides. Run a string line across the top of both pitches to the corner. Move the bottom of the hip beam to the left until the top of hip beam plains out with the string. This will be where the bottom of the hip will actually sits or birds mouth. Fill in with jack rafters. This will not only make the hip right, it allow you to achieve the same overhang on both sides. It will also keep the same plain on both sides. There are Bastard Hip Diagrams to show the Birds Eye view of this. I hope this may be of help in the future. Great job, looks awesome. Appreciate y’all!!!

The build on the property has been pretty all over the place and manic the last few years but credit where it is due... this new overhanging roof and deck really suddenly makes a cabin that was dwarfed by the garage and addition look like a real mountain lodge... its going to really transform the home and property.
I am so happy you guys will get to really enjoy your deck now that it's covered. And as Allie alluded to, even enjoy it in the winter by sitting and watching the snow fall. But the hot tub will be the best way to enjoy a winter day! So happy that Allie is finally getting her hot tub!

Hot tub? Try endless pool. So much better and you will not regret it. It is both a hot tub and a pool. In the same space as a large hot tub. Swim in place or soak in the hot tub. I know I don't regret it. Best choice I have ever made.
That deck isn't going to support a hot tub or endless pool without some serious work underneath. Should be done b4 adding any more framing or deck boards. Hope they think of that.
So now that the roof is, for the most part, done, how is the daylight in the house? I knew that it would be a lot of darker. In the winter, the temp in these rooms will be a lot cooler than last year because the sun will not heat up the living room and kitchen. So far, a great job effort by everyone involved!
I absolutely love how close your family is. Hardly a day goes by that doesn’t have a huge block of time where you are all working for a common cause. Family is so important. Mine is scattered, never relying on one another. How I envy your closeness. A huge blessing for sure.

First time in 12 years that I have some nostalgic feelings for the seasonal change as Allie describes the weather in Utah. We moved from the NE to TX and we get hot, hotter and blips of spring and fall with an occasional snow flake.
4:15 The porch roof is so flat; you'll have snow piled on it up to the main roof with those windows completely covered. At some point, the snow on the main roof will stop sliding off and just sit there all winter. It may not slide off the porch roof also. 19:00 If you are installing a ceiling, fine. If not, "Birds' Nests!" It is a great relief to get to the point where the heavy framing is done. Don't forget to nail the fir tree to a corner of the roof.

Recommend keeping the AC unit where it is and deck over it in the mountains cause the heat will be on you before the snow even melts. If it’s buried in snow it will be a nightmare.

What is your plan for the side door entry that had 10 ft of snow last winter ? Cover ? It was Spring before the roof ice and snow slid off.

Heated roof. So low pitch slumping may not happen. Heated when needed will allow snow and or ice to slide off the roof with ease.

I absolutely love the porch. I can not imagine my life without my back porch and the hours of sitting and watching and listening and reading and dreaming and planning that goes on out there. I know your porch will bring the same peace for y'all some day.

Recommend keeping the AC unit where it is and deck over it in the mountains cause the heat will be on you before the snow even melts. If it’s buried in snow it will be a nightmare.
