    Snowy owls can survive tough Arctic winters, living year-round in regions like Alaska. But their population in North America has dropped dramatically over the last decade - by around 64%.
    Now, scientists are closely monitoring the breeding patterns not just of snowy owls, but also of lemmings. As the birds’ main prey, the local rodent population has a huge effect on owl numbers. What could be causing the decline of these species down to the final third, and how might it affect the future of the Arctic?

    Hey friends! Thanks for watching this video. There are more crucial changes happening in the frozen North, most of which are thanks to climate change.... like the killer whales, which now find open doors to once closed waterways and thus access to new prey: czcams.com/video/FsAfZxyw3r0/video.html

    That time lapse around 1:50 was just extraordinary! The nuance of orbital mechanics in action. Strange thing to see an owl species in an environment without trees -- nests on the ground in the wide open and all. This crew really followed the raising of these chicks for quite a length! That or owl chicks develop far faster than I had thought.

    Fascinating!! As you said, "we don't notice these small rodents..." We do need to get down to the tiniest detail(s) of the root cause. The sooner the better!! Hope that the researchers find some answers soon...

    snowy owl are very cool but it's hard to believe that they depend on such tiny rodents and it would be very sad if our descendants only saw pictures, drawings and videos of them . Anyways ice video and cinematography keep up the good work

      Dying is an exaggeration. Humans are not capable of eradicating all life on Earth. At worst, we could wipe ourselves out and most larger plants and animals. Given a few million years, new species will arise. Earth used to have no oxygen, just CO2 and when the first plants and algae starting creating oxygen, it was extremely poisonous to most life and caused the first mass extinction. Now most life on earth metabolizes oxygen. Things adapt

DYING means humanity dies and wipes out most life that exist, the sixth mass extinction. that is fucking unacceptable and down playing it like that, just casually accepting the extinction of humanity and most of the biosphere as we know it zombie level idiocracy

    Seems very good. Lots of emphasis on the importance of lemmings, which is fully believable. However, several of the snippets actually show small birds as prey of the Snowy Owl and the Arctic fox is carrying an egg. Yet throughout this the narration was only about lemmings, ignoring that clearly other prey are taken.

    • @obambagaming1467
      @obambagaming1467 Před 2 lety +4

      But the lemmings are their main food source and without them they can't feed their young.
      They wont necessarily starve because of less lemmings because there is other food, but they can't feed their young since they need much more prey for that.
      And as mentioned in the video: they will only nest in areas with many lemmings. If they can't find a good place, they wont produce offspring.
