I did bad ... again. I find it amazing that one cannot use conservation of energy. It means one can do calculations on cosmic scale without even taking unknown energy loss into account.
shoot a bullet (mass m, speed v) into a wall (mass M>>>m, speed zero). Momentum is conserved but Kinetic energy is not conserved. momentum before is momentum after, thus mv = (m+M)v', thus v'=mv/(m+M). KE after is 0.5(m+M)*m^2v^2/(m+M)^2 which is zero as M >>>> m. Thus after the collision the wall + bullet has momentum but no KE which is p^2/(m+M). The loss of KE is due to heat.
after the collision KE=p^2/2M, p=mv is conserved. M (mass wall + bullet) is HUGE (because M>>>m). p=mv coulld be 1, but M could be 10,000 *Thus mometum is conserved but KE is not conserved*
