This one started in 2021 when I was listening to some top-tier Hungarian-Romani folk music (Csilavtu by Kalyi Jag, if you're curious). It clearly sounded like two people arguing about truth on the bridge of a starship, which seemed as though it might go into a story somewhere. I tried quite hard to buy the rights to the music because no other music would do for the story. Well that didn't go so well and I lost a bunch of sleep and emails over it, but thought the story might work without it anyway. No problem, I'll be done with the whole project in a month tops, I thought. That was over a year ago now. My hair is greyer since, and I never got the rights to the track, and I'm beginning to lose the will to live, but you can't deny two people were getting kinda passive-aggressive on the bridge of a starship. And isn't that really what life is all about?
Thank you for watching, as always. You're ever so kind.

The change from "narrativist" to "friend" at the end there.... chilling
Yes I noticed that as well. It's all about perspective. I think this story has a lot more truth to it. Humans are powerful creatures that have been made to believe we are useless.
@@linzalabamaawake5230Very true, as George Carlin put it, they (the Elite) want obedient workers.
Obedient. Workers.
Life is what you make it though, within the realm of what human beings are capable of.
@@linzalabamaawake5230they literally die at the end, what the fuck are you talking about
He calls him friend as soon as he enters the narrativist quarters. I guess at that point he'd probably come to believe that the narravitivist was his friend since he'd help him survive thus far, and was going to cure the ship. But In the end he is forced to believe the narrativist is his friend.
I think the coolest part about all of this is how the "The most tempting ideology is the belief that you have none." and "Is that not an ideology in itself?" lines explain everything. The Narrativist does not see any belief. He can write them all and yet cannot believe them.
And yet... he still wanted to experience it. He believed his life could be improved by experiencing it. In the same way "The blind do not see black, they simply do not see" isn't a full truth because the blind can still imagine and visualize structures, the Narrativist does not have no belief, he simply has formed a primitive belief from his experience and orders. Perhaps an objective one, maybe a primitive one, but at the end of the day it is still an ideology.
You cannot truly have no belief.
The mission was doomed from the start.
Edit: I wish to add onto this, something that I'm not sure if I can fully believe and yet with a shuttering breath I must accept... facts are malleable. As the Narrativist said, no amount of facts truly matter to someone if their beliefs can warp it however. Yet here I am, someone who comments far too often, and argues far too often to. I'm a believer of science, I constantly cite sources and try to convince everyone from the mildly deterred to the insane zealots to accept the truth and stop hating each other blindly, often in defense of equality or climate change or anything that we know accepting would only make things better. And yet, in my belief in science not an ideology in itself? I can tell myself I'm correct the entire time but the only thing that affirms that over anyone else are the writings of other people. I _know_ it's true in my mind and yet others don't, and if others don't, does that make it true? Of course it does, we'd die without oxygen. But what if we didn't?
The point of this addendum is not that I now accept that I'm a believer in religion just like anyone else. No, that's ridiculous, facts still exist. Reality still exists. But the point is to remove myself from my scientific pedestal. To realize that no amount of science can convince someone who's not open to being convinced. That in a sense, from the believer's point of view, a belief can warp any reality. It doesn't matter if I'm right, if I'm seen as wrong by some people, I will forever be wrong in the view of those people, no matter how many facts I recite.
It's truly a chilling philosophy, but in itself, it's a reality. Will that stop me from trying to spread the truth? Of course not. But in the end I'm trying to work for a better tomorrow same as anyone else, it's just that better tomorrow is different for everyone, and even the desire for a better tomorrow in itself is a belief. It's just... something to keep in mind.
This is perhaps one of the greatest comments I have ever read. It had the selfless sacrifice of telling from ones own experiences on a social platform, and it was honest in reciting what the user believed. It was an essay for the eyes, playing the sweet ideas that I had not thought about, (or chose not to acknowledge), while staying true to reality in a respectable way. Kudos to you Mr. Advertisement. Kudos... To you.
Without the truth of Darwin, we're going to die out, which is exactly what has been going on since 1945. But what if populations were indeed equal?

Always a pleasure to hear that quote by P.K. Dick
Great Video, as always
You have to ask yourself though, did he ever truly stop believing to confirm this theory, or did he just tell himself that he did? Countless people every day claim to no longer believe in love as tears well up in their eyes. That is not the same as not believing, that is just believing from a different perspective, not unlike those that reject the devil keeps the devil alive trough their faith in it. It would be extremely difficult to truly not believe in our so called physical reality. Rejecting it is easy, but to let go of our belief in it is a totally different matter altogether. In our faith in this world and it's systems, taking away our oxygen would kill us. But if we truly didn't believe in physical existence then death wouldn't be real either, and there would be nothing to fear.

This man (xurb1a) has ruined consciousness for me
Exactly, he is what everyone thinks they understand yet he says he is different, I love that they used "a blind man doesn't see black he sees nothing," as such the naritavist is the truest embodiment of nothing that wich we think we understand, I doubt we ever will because its impossible to comprehend nothing but knowing that this character in a fiction about something, can so deeply hold that philosophy is beautifuly ironic in a way. Having no real antagonism but just being someone for the first time not to advocate 'normalcy' in the deepest fundamentals of belief but poetically deeply ignorant to 'reality'
But then, how did he get where he was, and not be locked in a "quiet room"? Or was it the protagonist who was mad and hallucinating from the beginning? How real was the spaceship in the first place? I'd rather watch a Beavis and Butthead episode, frankly. 🤡🥴🤮

But the final image shows that even though their reality was happy and joyous and everything was fine, it doesn’t stop the ship from exploding and everyone from dying. Reality can be whatever you want, and you can create whatever substitutions you want to take it’s place, but one day the real thing is going to come and ruin everything all the same because even if it’s not real to you it is still real

All I know of you is your videos, and I don’t know if you read these, I know I would never have the time. Just wanted to say I have never been more interested in anyone’s videos, yet simultaneously I’m terrified. I’m terrified everyday, but you remind me of my existential terror, and your mind is so intriguing. Thank you for existing on the other side of this screen, thank you for never ceasing to amaze me with your creative and insightful ideas. Thank you, sir. I wish you the best in your lifetime, and I’ll always be here to listen and learn.
Thank you Exurbia, that was really, really smart and wellmade. Like a 2 hour film in 20 mins
This video started very comical, then progressively got more and more disturbing as the details of this situation got revealed.
Then boom, your insanity becomes your freedom, isn't that a fun, dark and twisted happy ending?
This would make a phenomenal feature length film. Just yesterday I sent a new friend a ton of your videos, wondering when the next upload would be, and here you are
Agreed. I’ll add that this sort of has the same story beat as Pandorum. Except much more cleverer.
There is a Swedish film that explores some similar themes, not exactly this, but it has similarities. It's called Aniara. Personally I didn't think it was that great, but if you're into this kind of thing you might like it.
@Daniel Thanks mate!
The music at the end highlighting the rantings of the narrativist is great
too good. actually brought me to tears.
Out of all your videos, this was the one that struck the most horror and suspense.
i think my favorite part about this is that when the (spoilers) second ventillation is lost, the narrativist *is* affected, even though he is supposed to be immune by not having an idealology/being entirely neutral. I'd guess the message of the story if there is one, is that not having an idealology is one in of itself.
I think he was affected the whole time. He was in the captains chair, with the highest clearance, and like he said the captain "had gone mad like the others". His ideology of believing to not have an ideology was a result of the logothesia, not his birth. "The most seductive ideology is having no ideology" is an ideology itself afterall.
he was affected from the start, infact the first one who made the stuff leak in the ventilation, which is why his clearance was taken away in the first place.
They said that he wanted to sabotage the entire voyage from the start
holy heck what a ride this video was.
oof, my brain. every time i watch one of your videos or read one of your books, i feel pulled beyond the typical comfortable confines of consciousness and experience a moment of oneness with the abyss and the infinite. and each time i feel stretched further.
i feel like you're exercising our minds to prepare us for some great cosmic awakening.
Mind Blowing! Exurb1a is one of the greatest storytellers of all time! This story was fantastic and I was immersed the entire time.
15:20 "If they had ever existed at all, they were gone now"
Beautiful writing
I love the stories you tell I could just sit here and listen and it's like being taken to a whole other world
I felt like this story never even left the planet
I don’t think I have ever empathized more with a villain than just now. But at the same time I feel like the janitor is very similar. These two characters feel like two of the different responses one could have when you are faithless.
One trying to understand people and questioning their beliefs when they have glaring issues. Able to be objective and seemingly without any particular beliefs, but not being weighed down by it, still able to enjoy life
The other desperately trying to convince themselves that their lack of belief is the cause of their unhappiness, and so they seek it out blindly to fix a perceived flaw.
Wow, the best thing I have "read" in a long time. Getting the book right now :). Wonderful writing
i dont know if this is profitable or gets views or has wide appeal. I will say I love your videos and you never fail to innovate hope you feel proud about your work
I randomly got it recommended to me by youtube, never watched a video of his before, was pretty interesting although I don't know what to do with it. Looks high quality. I think it will have a wider appeal
This is such a gripping piece of sci fi! The narrativist is gonna be one of those antagonists i just cannot get out of my head for years. In my opinion this is one of your best works fitting simultaneously being compelling fiction and social commentary.
This was the first video I was truly confused by lol
best video ever, giggling and being utterly impressed the whole time, now im just planning on who to send this to so more people can experience this!!! i am copying the link of the video and pasting it into an important list in my notes app so i know to return to it
Okay, so this is the first story I've listened to from exurb1a. Boy is it fucking weird. And yet compelling. I really enjoyed it and look forward to listening to others.
Welcome to the madhouse
