  • Ricardo began his ascent at the ocean in Hilo and biked 34 miles to an elevation of about 8000' where he walked and pushed his bike (with brief moments of riding) to the visitor center at 9200'. Ulyana joined at that point (she drove and provided water and food to Ricardo during his bicycle ascent). Uly and Ricardo hiked 12 miles to the summit and back down to the visitor center. Most of the time in rain and freezing rain near the summit. Ricardo's final numbers were: 34 miles biked with 8000' of elevation gain,14 miles hiked with 5800' of gain for a total of 48 miles and 13,800'+ of elevation gain in under 16 hours.
We have not found any report of another self powered ascent and descent like this one (it has been biked using the road only, but no reports of bike and hike up and down the entire trail). If you or anyone you know has done it please share it with us. We'd love to know and compare notes.
