What Lies Beneath

Located about 50 miles northwest of Columbus, Ohio, Campbell Hill, at 1,549 feet, is Ohio’s state highpoint. The “hill” is actually a glacial moraine, left behind by the massive Laurentide Ice Sheet that covered millions of square miles of Canada and the Northern United States. We hiked Illinois' highpoint, Charles Mound (1,235 ft), on June 1, 2019. It's on private property and, due to the owners' wishes, only open the first weekend in June, July, August and September. While in the state, we took the time to visit Fermilab, the US's premier particle physics and accelerator laboratory in Batavia, Illinois.

This Science Wednesday explores the volcanic features of northern Arizona. Also featured is Humphreys Peak, Arizona's highpoint at 12,633 feet. While Ricardo climbed it back in 1999, this was Ulyana's 20th state highpoint, climbed on May 15, 2019 with friends and colleagues from the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences.

What does 'pole pole" mean, please?
it means "slowly, slowly."
@@SummitsSongsandScience I feel a great need to add to this. Of course you're right. The phrase got on my radar a few times in Tanzania and Zanzibar. I knew it literally meant "slowly slowly" but I got a sense it had a deeper meaning. After returning home so depressed that my vacation was over and searching CZcams for every version of the Jambo song I could find, I came across Ricardo's Kilimanjaro song here where he mentions pole pole. Then I started to dig a little more. I asked one of the guides I had in Zanzibar, Ahmad, and this is what he wrote: ’Pole Pole’ in Swahili does indeed mean “slowly” or “gradually.” However, it’s also used in various contexts to convey patience, caution, or a gentle approach. In the song you linked, it seems to emphasize taking things easy, enjoying life, and not rushing through experiences. In different situations, ‘Pole Pole’ can also imply taking care, being careful, or showing empathy towards someone facing challenges or difficulties. Overall, it carries a nuanced meaning of slowing down, being patient, and taking a relaxed approach to life. I will strive to embrace this phrase as my new mantra, and if I notice myself falling off course, I'll just pull up this song and Ricardo's smiling reminder.

Interesting! Is the complete lack of melanin a genetic anomaly, that may occur randomly?
Several genes provide instructions for making the proteins involved in the production of melanin, and albinism (complete lack of melanin) is caused by a mutation in one of these genes. Different types of albinism can occur, based mainly on which gene mutation caused the disorder.

Re: Grizzly clip @end: Over half the times I've been on top of Grizzly, the winds were that bad (or worse!)! One of the few times me and my partners were knocked over by super high-winds was on the ridgeline to this summit. Having skis attached to packs actually gave the winds something else to bite into with a sail-like effect and helped in throwing us to the ground...
