Is your VFD not powering up? Are you getting an error code? Or is it running rough? Troubleshooting can be a long process. In this video, our VP of engineering Craig Hartman goes through a basic step by step guide inspecting different parts of your system in order to diagnose a non-working VFD or VFD panel.
When you inspect any electrical equipment, make sure you follow the safety procedure at your facility and wear proper protective equipment (PPE).
Craig used an MDI 350HP pump and fan VFD panel for demonstration in the video.
Check out similar panels here: www.vfds.com/mdi-ff1-panels

Also, when you shut down a VFD, you should wait at least 10 minutes as most of them hold a charge that will dissipate through a resistor. If you go touching things right away because you have opened the disconnect, you could do the electron boogie for a few seconds. And that's worse than the chicken dance...

Allow for failed bleeder resistors. Use a voltmeter (rated for at least 500V) to check the capacitor voltage, which may exceed 320VDC when powered, before sticking your fingers in there. Stay clear of anything over 40V or so! AC 'tingles'; DC contracts your muscles and overrides any (millivolt) signals from your brain: your muscles won't let go! Bit awkward, that.
A relative opened up a camera flash unit that had been off for a day (they don't have bleeder resistors to discharge them). He must have touched the charged capacitor; he doesn't *usually* scream loudly like that...

I used to repair mitsi drives for a living...many moons ago when vf control was the defacto. This guy is exactly right in his explanation.
If I could add a couple of points:
    1. Smell the drive.....if it has a "burnt" smell then its usually the power section and chopper section blown. You can sometimes see the power device sidewall blown out, exposing some white smoky looking gel...maybe this has changed on the newer devices.
    2. A faulty drive has a certain squeaky sound....unfortunately that a difficult one to explain I could diagnose a faulty drive just by the way it sounded..it was usually the capacitors on the chopper boards. Mitsubishi used to pull the gate signal slightly negative to switch the power devices off.
I doubt I could hear a faulty drive now and the newer power devices are much better at switching on and off.
Anyway, that was many moons ago my exposure to industrial drives is now a button/parameter checking thing and this in its own right can be the difficult thing you have to find the right parameter but the fundamental principles stay the same
But to the good gentleman explaining this video you are spot on.

While the motor was disconnected and the drive was off you can also check the gates on the IGBTs with your meter on diode check, you can check the capacitors across the buses somewhat, you could also check the MOVs and the rectifier with a diode check as well.

How can a normal vfd be able to put power back into the grid?
It can't because normally on the utillity side of the DC bus is no inverter to do so.
But if the motor feeds into the drive You could have a break resisor or DC break.
Otherwise the drive will trip and let the motor free run

On a mitsubishi inverter, 9999 in a parameter means it's set to dataplate ratings by default. Setting a 'real' value in there is usually a precursor to sensorless flux vector mode. Setting these away from 9999 must be followed by a flux vector autotune

Maybe you can describe how to check the rectifier bridge, if the SCRs are shorted and the capacitor in the next video. Also, before powering on the drive, you should always ohm the input terminals if they are shorted. Those are main causes of drive failure.

Allan - worked on many of these as a locomotive tech. Yes, the SCR/diodes fail more than anything. Basically you can find your problem using your meters diode check. They almost always fail shorted rather than open. The freq drives usually show the diode configuration on the panel cover.

Well this is 5 months late and you know the answer by now.. but for the record this is typically the 'P+' connection where a DC Link Choke would go. So the choke itself is what would bridge the P and P+ terminals in order to close the loop to the DC bus. If the choke is not present, a jumper needs to be there in order for the DC bus to charge.
