      Very good video, thumbs up and subscribed. I am having a hard time finding this info but do you think a Daiwa Ballistic LT 5000 that weighs 8.1 oz and has a line capacity of Mono(lb/yd): 16/250, 20/195, 25/140 would be a good fit for a 9ft Medium Bass Pro ocean master thats 15-30 lbs.
      1 - 3 oz. or should I go up in size to a 6000 Ballistic thats 11.1oz Mono 20/270 25/225 30/160. I want to get good distance at reservoirs using baits like worms and leeches but not sure what teh perfect balance would be above the reel.

    Well done guys. You touched on this a few times. Decide what you are presenting to the fish first, then what rod will give you the action you need then reel. This is something I carried over from my fly fishing to salt and just makes for a much more effective combo. Thanks Again.

    Great podcast guys. One thing I find that was overshadowed and not understood with rods is this.- the most important thing for a rod to me is what lure weight you’re intending on using the most with the rod? Choose your rod power according to the weight recommendations of the rod. For example. Weight rating of 1/4 to 3/4 would be a great choice for a 3/8 ounce lure. It falls right in the middle of the weight ratings. Next is what type of lure is it? Is it a botttom contact with a large hook? You may need a fast action... is it a reaction type lure? Then you possibly could go to more of a moderate fast to moderate action rod. This is what helped me. You don’t need a heavy power rod for a lure with a small treble hook

  • @muddyh2o2init44
    @muddyh2o2init44 Před 4 lety +4

    I agree to a certain extent, you have to absorb all the specs . Some manufacturers describe the action in reverse. They
    Say the action rating is based on how fast the rod returns to straight, not where it bends. Power determines line and lure weight . Species and conditions specific.

    I just came across this video. I have a rod i am trying to find the right reel for. I built this rod from a Rod Geeks blank. It is 7'6" MH fast action. I put Fuji Titanium guides on it. With this combo it weighs in at under 6 oz. I have a BG 4500 that i put on it and it is very nose heavy. I have an older Penn Captiva 5000 that i put on it and it seems better balanced than with the BG.
    I live on the E coast of Florida. I fish the ocean, Sebastian inlet and the river so i need the reel to be very versatile. And i maily fish artificials as well.
    As a side note. I built another rod with the microwave guides. It seems to function very well.
    I have seen you guys going fishing. I have driven past you while you were waiting at the light at A1A and 5th ave to head to the inlet while i turned on 5th ave.
    Keep up the good work on teaching us

    Great Stuff!... and entertaining banter too! It would be helpful if you would give specific model numbers of the rods discussed. For example, and are MANY variations in the E6X family. Another point would be the "Saltwater" versus "Freshwater" versions (e.g., St. Croix). I'm guessing this is just marketing, but if there is really a difference, it would be good to know the details.

    I agree a more universal rod/reel combination as opposed to “technique specific” so can I have 5 rods as opposed to how many do I need? Budget as well as let me think about this (and therefore time) can make it expensive and LESS time with line in the water. These gentlemen may have the time to spend on the water and applaud their knowledge. At some point K.I.S.S. principal comes into play.

    I agree about the rod 1st when it comes to casting and hooking the fish. Reel comes to play when you reel back the fish or in the presentation part. However, lure and presentation are critical, that’s what gets the fish to bite, then the reel and line come to play. To summarize, rod for casting and fighting the fish, line for the size and type of lures, along of securing the fish, the. reel is important of presenting the lure and bringing the fish in. All important in that order.

  • @geoffreystone1598
    @geoffreystone1598 Před 2 lety

    I agree with you that the rod is most important when battling a fish. So right handed fishes should use a left handed reel! I’ve seen so many videos where the fisher is changing hands after the cast and holding the rod in the weakest limb because the reel is wrong.

    First great conversation about rods.. Its such an easy habit to think of rods as an after thought... With no industry standard you are stuck with lure rating in combo with line power action to try and get a picture without hands on.. Much better to buy rods hands on or try them first where reels from reviews and specs can paint a much clearer picture.
    Great info.
    But about comments about spinner reels and drag:
    10lb braided line is actually average 25lb actual break strength 20-27lb in most popular brands.. Drag should be 5-7.5lbs.. 10lb rated could be anywhere from 9lb to 29lbs across the industry just in braided.. 30lb mono for leader can be 29-50lb+.. Most manf.Line strength has a large buffer I,e underrated compared to when I was a kid starting salt fishing in the early 80s.. Line is so much better and consistent with endless choices.
    These reels are not baitcast round reels which is where the drag % setting and set and forget came from.. This was because any more drag needed to slow runs or stop being spooled was easily accomplished with a thumb or hand on the spool.. This is not easily accomplished on a spinning reel.. You thus adjust the drag.. The 20-30% of break for properly rated line to target fish was an intial or base setting that on a round reel could be set it and forget it most time.. Spinners are different.. Still is a base but for control the drag knob replaces the hand on the round reels...
    Hook a nice large stripper up here in Va MD area at a river mouth @ the bay with 2-3lb drag and it WILL spool a 200-250yd worth of line and break you off.. Done it on larger tarpon farther south as well
    The info on rods was great.. Showing balance points etc very helpful.. Is a great video for a newer angler turorial and helpful even to more experienced anglers.

    The reel also acts as a counter weight when casting. If your taking on sharks and rays you need the extended line range like in a 10000 but its not easy to cast with that so your only gonna cast that once every 30mins or so. My first mistake was to put a penn 8000 liveliner on a prevail 14ft. To much weight to cast far or accurately where when i matched it with a aird lt 5000 it was too light and i felt like i was gonna throw the rod away every cast. A 6500 reel works a treat

    Hey guys, I'm dialed into your podcast on rod vs reel and I've got lots of screw-ups to show for my inexperience. But Luke just said something that grabbed my attention. What difference does a rod make when fishing with lures vs natural bait? We spend A LOT of money on bait, believing that live (or dead) shrimp catch more fksh.

    • @blacktidelures7067
      @blacktidelures7067 Před 3 lety +2

      Using artificials, you will be casting 10x more than if you are using live bait. Therefore, a rod used mostly for artificials should be lighter, with a fast action to help cast light lures. With live bait, generally those things aren't as important since you're doing far less casting.

They're durable and cheap and if you're going to toss dead shrimp or cut bait off a dock they'll do fine. But if you want to cover a lot of water having something lighter will be a tremendous difference.

    Lews rods an reels are high quality for price. The reels have smooth drag an smooth retrieves with sealed bearings that hold up really well. I've got my lews reels soaked by dropping reel in water an no issues. Yes take care of reel by drying cleaning an putting oil an grease on components. The lews rods are strong yet sensitive to where you'd feel the action of fish that won't break. The guides are quality an do not wear out or corrode easily an are smaller to get better distance. For $80.00 plus to $100.00 you'd get a quality lews spinning rod an reel combos for sure. I have a couple lews spinning rods an reel combos in $100.00 to $100.00 plus dollar range. The Mach 1 lews spinning rod an reel I have I noticed price going up because the high quality an demand for this spinning rod an reel combo I feel is a must have. The rod has small durable guides tough an sensitive rod that holds up but can feel activity of fish. The drag an retrieve super smooth an durable if you accidentally drop reel into water. A must have is a Mach 1 lews spinning rod an reel an a lews smash spinning rods an reels.

    So whats best for a 6K Saragosa? A Star Stellar lite 7'6 12-20lb (my preference bc it can still cast 2oz + no problem) or 15-30lb rod? Usually a 12-25lb or 15-30lb rod would match better to a 6K size but Star rods are a lot more stout than most rod brands.

      Not sure of exact models but Falcon has a great selection of light weight rods that are very high quality. I also own a st. croix Mojo inshore and this rod is fantastic and light weight. ST. Croix also makes a Mojo bass of the same style. All of the mojo rods from st croix, the inshore and bass model also come in a kayak version with a shorter butt to that works better when sitting in a kayak

      For Inshore, 4000 is big. It's ok but a 2500/3000 which are same just different in spool capacity would be better as they are smaller and lighter. Don't worry about drag power, and if you do upgrade to Carbontex washers and you are set.

      Get a 10 ft surf rod like the Penn Battalion with Penn Spinfisher VI 5500 or 6500. That reel is sealed well enough if you accidentally drop in salt water but be sure to rinse off well if you do. Do not hold it under water or reel underwater. The only reel that is designed for that is a Van Staal. This setup will get you close to $350.00. Use about 20 lb Power pro braid or Suffix 832 or Stealth Spider wire are also very good lines.

    Hello! I will be making rod and reel purchases in a couple of months. I don't have access to a boat; big lake nearby. What I like to do is have a couple medium heavy rods fishing on the bottom, long casting scenario; then , I want to have an ultralight rod working closer to bank catching fish to use as cut-bait. I was thinking about getting two saltwater surf rod/reel setups for the long distance bottom fishing. Have no idea what to get for ultralight rod/reel setup. Any ideas?

      @imthebestthingsincerice5122 Před 4 lety

      I absolutely agree! If you know what youre doing a $100 setup or even less than that will be just fine.
      Besides fish dont care how expensive your gear is if you know where they are and know when the best time to catch them.
      In my experience when you go for expensive stuff, thats you sometimes wanting more durability or are looking for some features that you cant get on a cheaper setup

    I never keep my rod perfectly parallel to the water. I also make sure my reel is cleaned greased an oiled with fresh line. Then I tie the hook on line Then hook 2lb bag to the hook and adjusted drag.

  • @joegrande4848
    @joegrande4848 Před rokem

    True to spend more on the rod than reel. Important note: you don't want a reel so cheap that line doesn't wrap tightly on the reel or the drag is so cheap it's not smooth. If the drag is rough an has a jerking sensation when coming off the reel 9 times out of 10 you'll lose a fish. Also you'd get alot of backlash if line doesn't wrap tight. When you reel line in after you cast, just be sure to keep index finger close to reel to help control line it's called feathering the reel.

    I broke my favorite high end rod that was gifted to me by my groomsmen on a large stingray after years of great use. The 90 degree rule that Luke mentioned, is that 90 degree from the water/horizon or 90 degree from estimated fish/line angle?

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  Před 4 lety +2

      So sorry to hear about the rod that broke! The 90 degree rule is relative to the angler that then line is pulling. Another way to think about it is that you never want the tip of the rod to be bent far enough to be pointing back towards the butt.

    After the terrible beat on of the baitcasters and now we should go back to cane poles cause obviously reels are un important.... it’s 50/50 if you can afford a Stella and you put it on a 200$ rod you will never feel the advantage of the Stella. Match the rod reel $ and you get the best out of both wether u can afford 100 a piece or 1000 a piece

  • @brucer9409
    @brucer9409 Před 3 lety

    if you know where the fish are, a drop line on a popsicle stick works just fine, but the drag system isn't quite there. I spent most of my fishing life buying quality reels, and lower to mid-range rods, believing the reels were the most critical component, and now upon retirement I'm having a blast buying a collection of upper end rods, with actions that I never dove into as a weekend warrior. And it's not that I'm catching tons more fish, but the experience of fishing for most of us isn't livelihood, but pleasure, so why cheap out. If you haven't experienced the differences in rod blanks, lengths and actions, then I think you're missing out on half the joy of fishing, cause it aint really how many fish you catch, but the process of the sport in its entirety.

  • @joegrande4848
    @joegrande4848 Před rokem

    If you have lures or hooks lite wire ideally you'd want a moderate action. If you have a medium or medium heavy rod with a fast or extra fast action tip you'd rip a hole in fishes mouth. The pros have said this that enter big tournaments. I know what they meant because I used a medium power rod an fast action tip an lost alot of fish setting the hook. Lite wire hooks will rip a hole in the fishes mouth I've experienced it. I used a light hook set on light wire hooks as u supposed to.
