  • Little known and often overlooked, Grand Seiko has for years undercut Swiss quality with a collection of watches that have earned a loyal-if compact-following. For any one of the few people who have ever so happened to come across a Grand Seiko, the reaction is always the same: astonishment. The legend is true. But has it all been undone?

who cares about diameters on dive watches when it's end link to end link that matters?
I agree that a watch shouldn't look like a dinner plate on the wrist but nearly all dive watches are 40+ mm in diameter.
But they did listen and now we have thinner cases for the new high beat movements and micro adjustements in the form of sliders which I think they already had beforehand on their sports watches.
and for 300m divers you have the seiko springdrive collection.

Personally, I would still take a 16k Chronograph GS over a Daytona because the spring drive movement is a true achievement and the price of Daytonas/Submariners are based on brand and hype (even if they are decent watches). GS is on the rise and its well deserved after decades of being under the shadow of swiss counterparts with a lesser finish and lower levels of innovation. The fact that GS has cost effective models and sells its spring drive movements at affordable prices is a blessing for watch lovers.

Watches are made for different kind of people, and this one is no exception. I have a dozen of new GS, and, another dozen of the vintage. Though, this one is not for me, i can appreciate people who likes them. I have the SBGC 207 Jade Dragon with the 50 jewels 415 parts 9R86 movement. I bought it new for 5500 usd after the regular discount. This is a way better watch than my Daytona, inside and out, which i have just sold for 3 times the price of the GS. Next to go, soon, would be my Batman and Hulk. I have ordered for the LX Professional diver. This one is zaratsu polished inside and out too. It's designed such that it does not require helium, unlike the marinemaster, and, yet, qualified for saturation diving. Interesting innovation. Ken Okuyama, my man, this is indeed a Ferrari of a watch. The tourbillion is a marvel, but, now, you can have one for 500usd. The spring-drive is a standing marvel, testament of piaget's 70K failure, also a testament that the LX Professional, is indeed grand.

As far as the SBGC229 is concerned, I also think that despite the huge price increase to the previous limited model SBGC219 from $ 15.8k to $ 21k it still sells well. I have asked for a price from two dealers, the discount offered was low and it is well above my budget.
I saw the Seiko LX Spring Drive model at a Seiko meeting in Dortmund. In Germany there is a large SEIKO community and soon also a separate forum. These watches are from the finish over Rolex, only the clasp could be better.

Two things wrong with Grand Seiko in my opinion:
1: The Brand. Seiko is known the world over mainly for producing decent watches at fair prices, and that’s great. Grand Seiko, however, is largly unknown outside of the watch community. When these fetch Rolex-level prices, it is important to differentiate your brand from it’s better known, lower priced namesake. If it were me in charge of Seiko, all GS models would be absorbed into the Credor badge.
2: The models. Can you think of any GS models off the top of your head? Not likely, as they are a baffling collection of letters and numbers, rather than unique names. Speedmaster, Explorer, Navitimer, these evoke an image in your mind of watches past and present, all designed in a similar fashion, yet the name comes first before the reference number. Even the GS Snowflake is a nickname for a dial type, rather than an actual model. I would love to see more GS models take on true names like their Swiss competitiors.
Despite these gripes, I still think the timepieces themselves are second to none. I just wouldn’t buy one. I would actually love to hear some discussion from you guys on this if this comment doesn’t get lost too quickly.

Problem 1. Sports watches are hot, and Rolex is known for it's sports watches. Grand Seiko is not. GS needs to develop and maintain a signature sports watch style so it doesn't just look like a bigger version of GS dress watch.
Problem 2. Identity. from more than 10' away GS looks like regular Seiko. And 'across the boardroom table' show off value is critical in this market. The fact that they both have Seiko in the name doesn't help. Rolex / Tudor is a brilliant example of how to maintain different identities and price points.
Problem 3. 46mm. Works for Arnie and Sly, not for regular folk.
Problem 4. Spring Drive. As great as the technology may be, so is an apple watch. Rolex and all high end watches are only mechanical, and when we spend up big on a watch this is what we want. Leave the electronics to our phones

Terrific video, and points, as always. I’m a former mechanic, and now an old Engineering Professor who still fixes his own cars. Same with watches. When a Rolex needs a CLA, nearly every town in a first world country has a watch mechanic that can do it. What about the Grand Seiko? I doubt anyone but Seiko knows how to service it.

I am a big fan of GS. I think Spring drive is amazing, but the power reserve doesn't always need to be on the front. I have seen a few recently that show on the back through the case - smart move. Big watches are good for me with a 22cm wrist. Plus their website doesn't show off how good they actually look in light. I finally saw some in Vegas and was blown away with the GMT and sapphire bezel. This chrono is definitely a bit too busy: power reserve needs to go to the back and everything else needs to get smaller. And logo needs to be @ 12 o'Clock. I went to get one and instead ended up with a Seiko Prospex LX special edition Brown diver (SNP041) - at only 200 pieces worldwide, I couldn't pass it up. Could you review that watch? Great videos - we all appreciate all of the hard work it takes to make them!

GS - I own 2 of em. I think abt 2/3 of the line up are hits, 1/3 are misses. Those 1/3 look too similar to their lower end watches.
And my biggest beef - after sales service is lacking, at least in Singapore. The service centre here is the same one that deals with the rest of the other Seikos, and they handled the GS not much differently from the regular Seikos, and my GS got a rather badly scuffed watch back after a service... 😡 ... If you don't want a spring drive their mechanical offerings do not compete with rolex movements and they lose huge on design compared to rolex. Grand seiko won't go anywhere unless they upgrade their mechanical movements reduce the size of all their watches, improve design, and keep price lower than omega. Even then i really don't see this going anywhere. How shiny the shiny parts of your case are or how shiny the side of the indices look under a microscope do not make a watch better than another. finishing of tiny parts is not enough to make a case for a watch brand.

Bob Builder I’ve owned Rolex and I own two GS. I agree with you on the sizing but GS are far far superior to Rolex In finishing and horological development. • @android61242

@@nivero4393 beat rate is a design choice nothing more. A modern rolex has a free sprung movement with balance bridge and fantastic accuracy/anti shock characteristics. Their chronergy escapement was also able to improve their movement efficiency by over 30 percent. Any modern rolex is more advanced than any normal mechanical gs.

Grand Seiko needs a hi-beat, column-wheel chronograph. I respect spring drive but I just ... can't. A true mechanical chrono would put them squarely into a void which, as it happens, I'm in right now: MOTM? El Primero? Or ... what? Basically the herd of 7750's, of which even the really nice ones, e.g. Sinn, don't ring the horology bell like a chronograph should, IMHO. GS seems uniquely positioned to connect all the dots, including the hi-beat/tenths piece vis El Primero. I think Grand Seiko should be all over that; I'd be waiting in line to buy ... that's assuming it would be considerably prettier than the spring drive beast used in this excellent video. Perhaps while they're at it they can figure out how to combine a properly sealed crown with manual wind. *That* would be exciting.

They don't need to sell many of them, it just needs to exist. It's the same reason Samsung have phones that cost more than the most expensive iPhone. These aren't designed for most customers, but they elevate the brand through the exclusivity of the highest end product. Customers will buy the 'lower end' (and I use that term very lightly here) watches so that they can buy into an exclusive and expensive brand. All that matters is that GS are making £14k watches, not that they are selling many of them.
If I had the money, I would absolutely own that watch. I still live in hope of one day finding a GS Springdrive for under a grand.
