“When it comes to its dive watches, Seiko credibility still has a long way to go.” Considering Seiko pretty much wrote ISO6425, considering it invented a 1000 metre diver without an HEV in the early seventies, considering its entry level Turtle and Samurai can easily give a Submariner a run for its money functionally, I beg to disagree that it’s credibility is in doubt. Maybe it’s panache isn’t there yet, but Seiko’s reputation was made by its inexpensive but indestructible dive watches for the last forty years.

I bought the GS... and I haven’t taken it off since I did. It really is quite stunning in person. Much more subtle in a E63s Estate sort of way. The clasp is definitely the weak point especially compared to my Rolex and Panerai but the band makes up for it. The interesting part about the clasp though, is it’s dive suit adjustability on the fly that also makes one get over the design..function over form for sure.
I’m use to wearing a Marine Master SBDX014 so I’m probably the wrong one to ask as far as size but it really wears nicely. I’m not sure about the negative comments about the dial....in person I assure you that it really is fabulous. You find yourself looking at it as your driving with the sun hitting it and your hand is at the top of the wheel. The polishing and the ceramic bezel continue to make me feel that it is worth what I paid for the watch... sounds kind of weird to say for an $11K watch (the most I’ve ever spent on a time piece), but it’s true.

I'm a huge Grand Seiko fan and I would almost always choose GS instead of slightly boring and borderline overrated Rolex and Omega watches...but NOT in this case. When I first read of this fantastic piece, I was hyped to the maximum. As there are no GS dealerships in my home country, I managed to see and try one in Paris. What a disappointment! The watch is really wonderful, and it is finished above the standards of its Swiss rivals, plus it has a Spring Drive movement, for me the most exciting achievement in the watch world of today. So, why the sore feeling? Because it looks like a bloody brick on the wrist, that's why! I tried and wore some beasts in my time (Hamilton X-wind Chrono comes to mind), but nothing looked so sophisticated, so delicate, while at the same time being so unwearable! When you have a large watch, like AP Royal Oak Offshore for example (that I personally loathe, but whatever), it is at least designed and finished to be what it is - a huge, robust, tough timepiece, a different kind of luxury. And this GS Diver looks like the Frankenstein's monster, like a cross between Beauty and the Beast...yes, I like its design very much, I adore its finish and movement...I only wish it would come in a (way) smaller and slimmer package! So, my answer is - NO, this is NOT the Diver that I was waiting for, but it shows some promise...until then, I'll stick to my Omega and wait for GS to release something more wearable for us guys without Dwayne Johnson's-like wrists!

@@chris_4477 the actual watch is flawless. It's just too damn big. I suppose if someone is very rich and a big Seiko fan such that they would actually consider diving in a £10k watch then yes, this is the one to get. It looks like it was designed and made by the best watchmakers for diving. I could see it being cool as a casual desk diver too. You could get away with pairing the sea dweller with a suit that isn't made of neoprene, not so the Grand Seiko.

The only ones I really likes are those from the Grand Seiko Elegance Collection which are expensive like hell anyway. In my opinion the Seiko Prospex Spring Drive watches or the lower end GS Spring Drive or Hi-Beat Sport watches are a better value for money. Less water resistance, but most of us don’t dive and those of us who do definitely do not go below 200-300m. Same Spring Drive movement but with a 3 day power reserve, so you’ll have to wind the watch 4 times in 10 days rather than 2 on the SLGA001. Not such a big deal for me, as I will most definitely take much pleasure in winding and spending time admiring the watch.
You also get a lot more style options and (don’t berate need for this) better finishing on the lower cost models imho. On top of that, you have a GMT option on the lower end Spring Drive watches. This massive beast just doesn’t hit the mark for me.

Spring Drive needs a redesign reshuffle. The trick here was simple... they took the hated position for the power reserve and twitched the dial a little bit so the day is now at 4 and the PR at 9 but still just a quick-fix. I'm still gonna buy this, though, but I promise it'll be the last before they actually do something about that PR display positioning and the fact they don't make is normal the 8-day PR although in the after-market you can get it for 1k.

Even if you compare that model with its competitors you will see that in terms of watchmaking they really do fall short - boring plain cases, boring undecorated case backs, plain simplistic bracelets and dirt-trap bezels and cyclops glasses. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder but really not for me - much much prefer the Omega and GS here and I am a former sea dweller owner and fanboy.
