New IRA says border infrastructure would be ‘legitimate target for attack'

  • In an interview with Channel 4 News, the New IRA said it was committed to ‘armed actions’ against border infrastructure - and ‘the people who are manning them’.
The New IRA has broken its long silence over Brexit, saying any border infrastructure would be a “legitimate target for attack”.
In an interview with Channel 4 News - thought to be their first on-camera interview for decades - a masked spokesman for the proscribed group said: “The IRA is an army. And as an army we are committed to armed struggle for political and social change in Ireland.”
“Bearing in mind any installation or aspects of British occupation within the Six Counties - be it at the border or elsewhere - any infrastructure would be a legitimate target for attack and armed actions against those infrastructures and against the people who are manning them.”
The man added: “There’s been a border since 1921. It’s been resisted. It is being resisted. It will be resisted regardless of any deal formed around it.”

Sure, every now and then they'll set off a bomb or take potshots at some constables, maybe they'll even actually attack this new border, but they're too small to affect any sort of change.

I'm American and have no dog in the fight but the IRA is an abhorrent organization, on the wrong side of history with copious anounts of blood on their hands as any legitimate government. A United Ireland may come through referendum in our lifetime without IRA influence-- any and all IRA propaganda either silenced or largely ignored. It will be interesting to see these developments unfold; hopefully without further bloodshed, I hope.
Bless the Irish, bless the British, bless Humanity.

It’s a terrible tragedy when any family looses a loved one whatever side they fight on.I watched a documentary the troubles a secret history a former IRA volunteer bombmaker wept said I could have done such better things with my life. It’s easy to judge from the outside looking in but being born into a community involved in conflict what side would you choose you would fight for justice at least your perception of it with your own clan.Approaching 60 I look back on the bad decisions the struggle and selfishness at times of my life and I thank God I never had to take up arms because I believe we all will have to give a account of our life and that’s scary.Taking someone’s life you take everything they have will ever have and it’s final life is to precious to short and we should strive for peace.

The IRA is not what it used to be and could never pose the same sort of threat as in the past. With modern surveillance technology and the lack of passion amongst the current generation they are just not going to be able to have anywhere near the impact they had previously. Sure there will be a few crazies that could cause some harm but it is not going to be anywhere near the levels of the past. This issue is being blown up out of all proportion by elements of the media and political establishment for their own political ends.

That's probably why young guys with molotovs are so prevalent. You get enough kids with molotov cocktails and the police don't even attempt any arrests they just eat it in every video I've seen. It's unfortunate that's how they feel they have to do things but yea with surveillance how it is, if you can organize attacks by people who can't really get caught and for them it's just fun chaos and they get to be a part of a bigger thing on top of that and then just jog home. It's a weird dynamic. The IRA figured out years ago they can't go on as a multi brigade military structure (although south Armagh was capable for quite a while longer) they transitioned to cell structure. It's a weird situation to be honest. Because of the insanely long standing tradition of trying to kick the British out of northern Ireland I don't see it ending soon. The biggest issue in the future of using this strategy of sort of hooliganism is the same that happens in any country where that is employed. Its useful to mobilize young guys with nothing to lose who are willing to be crazy and the more you have the easier it is for them to all get away but once you achieve your goals... They still want the adrenaline rush. And as a political organization it can be difficult to deal with these people you used for so long because they got addicted to the conflict. I hope that doesn't happen and N Ireland gets what they want but for so many years fighting the British it will probably feel like a void for a lot of young people if N Ireland gets what they want.
