    Cal was so underated as a rider, always 100% never give up attitude.. Hopefully Yamaha will listen to his input and the M1 will be back near the top once again.. Hope to see him on the grid for Silverstone...

    He’s been THE hero of our household. We’d keep our Cal’s tee-shirts on and and don them anytime Cal would race, me and the Mrs would watch with baited breath wearing our shirts from America whatever the live programming gave us the pleasure of watching Cal.
    Total hero 🏆😉

    Another great interview from OMG and really nice to listen to what Cal has to say. Been a fan of yours Keith for years, even remember your Nascar days when Sky first started broadcasting. Your commentaries with Julian were always something to look forward and made the racing even better (When you doing a interview with Julian?). I know things move on and people come and go but you left quite a hole when you left commentating it just isn't the same. The guy now talks WAY to much, never shuts up. I will never forget one race where you and Julian were commentating years ago and you said " When you were racing and came down the start/finish line you looked at your pit board and it had your P45 on it" Never laughed so much fantastic keep up the excellent work at OMG the whole team is fantastic.

    I remember going to a meeting at Darley Moor back in the day and watching an Aprilia Superteens race when Cal fell off on the last corner in a race. At the time he would have been perhaps 14 or 15 years old. A short while later, I went to get something to eat at the green portakabin that is "The Darley Diner". Sitting on the step , beating himself up and preventing anyone going in (or getting out) was Cal. I felt like saying to him "cheer up son ,we've all done it" but I didn't as it wouldn't have gone down well. Even back then, he was totally driven even as a teenager. This interview touched on that side of him. Thank god I didn't say anything that he might have listened to.

    Keith.
    The reason British fans don’t really go to silverspoon is, they have got to money hungry. The track isn’t liked by most fans (the ones I speak to anyway) the food is almost double the cost than most other uk tracks. The list is endless, Donny would be a much better venue for Moto gp even brands.
    Nice to see a podcast with cal some people do t even know he is still testing for Yamaha. Keep the podcasts coming, all the best

    Cracking interview. In my opinion what Britain needs to be doing to get talent to shine for the world stage is: 1. Remake a one bike series (stock chassis + motor) with a complete level playing field (like Mac did it with the Virgin R6 cup which Cal attended) 2. to make it completely affordable and even funded by Palmer motorsports / uk racetracks or a major brand sponsor for tv time, 3. Use slicks/wets and one brand of suspension (cost or provided by a major tyre manufacturer) will prepare the rider much better for the world stage 4. Fill the grid without age limitation and allow current successful big name riders to race in the series (you learn a hell of a lot quicker following experience). 5. Start a moto2 prototype class in BSB for them to graduate to (like the ALL Japan Series used to with 125/250/500's). Just my thoughts... raced myself before Cal's time and even then affording was a big issue. Parents re-mortgaging their house was a norm and it isn't a good way to make talent available. Many good riders I knew stopped as the next step up was just unaffordable and everything else championship wise was out of the lime light for publicity. The talent was never shown.

      That’s all good, but until they stop making money off the racers backs then there will be no great British racers, you want the best riders then we need to do the same thing as in Spain (hence why 50% +/- are Spanish riders) they pay amateur racers to be on the start line, €1500 if I’m not mistaken, that way the only riders on the grid are gona be the best instead of whoever has the gift of the gab or just know someone that has a company with disposable income to put into it etc, they need to do better 👊

    Top quality that. Britain's greatest since BS7, open honest and interesting. I truly believe Cal would have won the Silverstone gp 18 if it wasn't cancelled. We bumped into him at IoM 18 in ramsey, he was fun an chatty an made us all feel welcome. 👍

    Massive Cal fan. Love his no bullshit attitude. And he's right we don't have any future stars at the moment. The two lads in Moto 3 are average at best,and I really like Jake Dixon but he's not got it either. I remember going to the translantic trophy races at Brands, we had so much British talent it was ridiculous. Keep up the great interviews and videos.

    We all love Cal.!! Says it as it is.!! Such a nice guy, we won’t have a British rider in Moto GP though as long as British racing is run like it is, as a father of a young rider in the BSB championship for some time, it is plain to see we are cash cows for the BSB machine. It has been made quite clear to us that if we have an opinion or have an issue with anything that involves the powers that be, then find some where else to race, Dorna pay BSB to run the series but then these kids are charged the same as everybody else to be able to race. We have turned are backs on BSB, so we can the go back to enjoying the sport we love again.
    Would love to see Cal at Silverstone though.!

    Watched Cal from the time he was in the R6 Virgin Cup, when Cal was on form and the bike was with him he was untouchable, he’d win by ridiculous margins

    I think the reason that interest in motorcycle racing is declining in the UK is that to really understand what the riders are doing, you need to have ridden a motorcycle. The number of motorcycle riders has declined since the school leaving age was increased from 16 to 18, so there aren't the 16 year olds needing a moped to get to work. To get more racing fans there needs to be a way to get kids back on bikes.

    British sports press reject ALL motorcycle racing. Never see it in the papers, nevver get it broadcast live for free on TV, never feature a British rider as an athlete, but we still get bloody boring old-fart cricket covering the papers. In my village 1/2 hour from Mugello in Italy we watch it free at the local pubs, WSBK, MotoGP, all covered in the small local newspapers! I come home to England and hear and see NOTHING about bike racing. There is some weird refusal fro 'above' to ignore and supress it. BTW, I always enjoyed and cheered for you Cal even as a big Rossi fan. I loved your aggression and ball-busting effort. A bit wild at times but what a spectacle. One Sunday the whole Italian pub was cheering you on. They are bike crazy over there. I hope you get plenty of races this year!

    Great to see Cal. Loved watching him race over the years. It was so cool having a Brit who could mix it with the best. We need that again. As a Scot, I wondered what people thought of how Rory Skinner was treated. Even Pedro Acosta needed a year. Rossi & Marquez too. Lorenzo needed a year before his 250 championship. Stoner needed a year in MotoGP to "bed in". One of the reasons i'm convinced Raul Fernandez will come good is because you could argue he should have won Moto 2 in his rookie year. No mean feat. Of course it's hard to beat Marquez winning the MotoGP title as a rookie. He was handed a factory Honda after a 3 or 4 years of a "no rookie can have a factory bike" rule mind you.

    What an absolutely fantastic pod cast so nice to see Carl and seeing him talk with out any pressure I think it's the first for me so relaxed I also hope he rides at the British GP and between now and then he finds something that makes that Yamaha competitive seeing him as a wild card and I know getting on the podium will be a big ask but how brilliant would it be for him to get a podium. Hope this isn't the last time we see Carl on pod cast you have got to get him back or do a down the pub Keith with him. Thanks guys as I said a fantastic pod cast.

    Great interview, love Cals honesty. As for US/UK riders, the options for racing in home championships like the MotoAmerica or BSB will not make MotoGP as appealing as it might have been five or six years ago. Production based racing is more appealing to the average guy, it's relative to their world where MotoGP is getting like F1. Us guys in our 60's have seen the best racing of true motorcycles rather than the LapTop tuners of today. Thats progress but not better entertainment, in my opinion.

    Loved this podcast two old racers telling us how it is. 😆 It was very interesting having Cal explain how Yamaha's test program was and the changes they have made now.
    Also Cal if your looking for a nice place to "winter" at least I suggest Arizona. I have a friend who retired there and loves it. (he sends me a picture every year of him & his wife on his motorcycle on Christmas day) 🤣My wife & I visited them for 10 day a few years ago and we both commented that for those days we had no aches or pains. I was awesome since I managed to smash myself up racing 250's back in the 1990's and every morning when I get up I wonder what part of my body is going to be hurting today 😉 (FTR today is left ankle & hip )😕

    lol I love how they always act baffled why silverstone does have huge numbers. It’s because the traffic in on race day is horrendous. As is the taxi on double time. Poor facilities inside and then to top it off the track is flat. There are no banked sides. Unless you are grandstand or get right to the front early you have no chance to see anything. We tried luffield B the other year and a quarter of the stand was leaking at the back. Plus they closed all the free stands to force you to pay for a grandstand. Ended up paying for a vip package which was an alright view but so expensive for some sausage and bacon sandwiches and canned beer. Row does it better. Does it cheaper.

    I believe there is still development opportunities in the in-line 4, I would lime for Yamaha to continue developing the in-line 4. The talent issues are a problem for about all nations outside of Spain and Italy, who would be willing to invest a huge amount....

    Ref Silverstone, come on guys have the guts to say it, it’s a great track to ride but it’s a shocking venue to go watch racing, it’s an F1 venue, can’t get close, looking through fences, ridiculous grandstand costs…. The fact there isn’t a Brit rider is not the only issue

    Kind of mind boggling, was the bike just so good for so long that it didnt need any major changes?

    Loved this! Always loved Cal, and I think it’s a big reason there’s no more British riders in gp…lack of personality! Cal was cheeky back in the day (thinking of the BBC days where I stole Matt Robert’s passport and gave back to him on the grid lol) our Brit riders nowadays are a tad boring. Scott Redding was fun to watch but sadly demoted, lowes is a vanilla guy and rider, Jake Dixon has potential but apart from that not much available - and as Cal said…it’s a matter of how much it costs to start riding in the uk, we have the best domestic racing series…but the progression is cack

    British motorcycling needs to have the same starting groups like Spain etc. do to bring on the young riders. Otherwise it will never get any better.

      Absolutely 100% correct. Unfortunately motorcycle racing isn't a priority sport in the UK. Same in the US and Australia.

      Michael Laverty has a school to bring on young racers, and there’s the British talent cup
      At the end of the day you still need vast amounts of money to make it
      Look what happened to Rory Skinner, lost his seat to a guy that brought €1 million to the team

      ​@@macsmith6216 I was so disappointed with the way Rory was treated, especially when you consider how many years Jake Dixon was given. That said, its hard.to argue with the results of Marcos Ramirez. Its a cutthroat industry isnt it.

      Look how long it’s take Jake to get where he is, Dorna has invested a lot of money to keep Jake in the series, so their not interested in another U.K. rider

    Re. Silverstone, the issue is that MotoGp has become a Spanish National championship. Dorna are doing to bikes what Bernie did to F1. It's a closed shop protection racket and fans, media, and small teams are being milked. Who wants to spend over £100 to sit in the rain watching a Spanish national race?

    Being a fan of British talent, I have fallen out of love with GP racing. it now seems close to impossible for British talent to make it to the GPs - Rory's experience appears to suggest that. We do have Jake, but surely he's now of an age, they're not interested? Whilst World Superbikes appears an outlet, even there, the chances appear limited.

    Re Silverstone attendances, it's cost. For a lot of people it's go to Silverstone OR have a family holiday. Prices have gone through the roof in recent years. I went every year until covid, wont be back.

    Yeah, he is really looking good right now than before when he was still a rider. I guess the stress of everything including the traveling really broke him. Especially towards the end of his career at LCR Honda when his results were starting to decline.
    Let's hope they deploy him for 6 races this year. Especially on those tracks that are technical & some where #Yamaha really struggle in the past.
    I think with his tie up with Yamaha. What if Cal builds a team for the youth in UK which will be supported by the manufacturer. Train them & let them race in the Mini cups then Talent Cups until they reach CEV Moto3 Junior Champoinship. I belive that's the only way for the Britsh riders to get back in the World Stage again.

    Keith, you'll probably already be aware of Tony Scott Motorsport and their MotoEvo project. He'd be an interesting guest to see how he plans to push riders down a moto2 route in the UK. A British rider can buy their way into a CEV team and bang for buck that would be the easiest thing to gain experience at that level without having to uproot. If racing in Europe is 10% more expensive than the UK due to travel costs etc, you're already b@lls deep in the wallet anyway to race here, a little more for greater return is a wise move in my view.

    I commented on a previous video that there is bias against British and American riders, and a bias towards Spanish and Italian riders. I can't believe there are only 2 countries that can produce MotoGP riders by and large. For example... Even toprak (Turkish rider, young, fast, marketable).. gets one test and no real shot for gp. No wild card... If you aren't Spanish or Italian.... Good luck

    Anyone know what happened to Keith? Did he leave btsport or was he sacked? He still does a lot with MotoGP so seems like it was maybe the latter?

    We need a British team but if you look at moto gp how many British sponsors do you see none it’s all Spanish and Italian and they want to see riders for there country

      You’ll need to find a British rider that’s at this level first then the small matter of grid places then around £15 million

    God he is missed. We need skin in the game. Mildly unkind to not consider Dixon, but always forgiven if only for the magical win in Australia

    Def need a british rider to help the british gp. Also, the strong domestic superbike series is really well supported and quite insular, with many fans seeming to rate it, wsbk and the TT as the pinnacle and superior than moto gp (whereas in most other places, moto gp is the definite pinnacle). Unfortunatley, when you see the show put on by so many other countries, the british gp is a little sparse to say the least! Agree with Cal's idea about Moto 2 bikes. Spending too long on road based bikes isnt ideal these days.

      He did have some offs didnt he! But you know, he tried his absolute eyes out and is the first to admit that he wasnt the most naturally talented. I would rather have had Cal's career (with 3 premier class Moto Gp wins) than being a multiple domestic series champion, etc.

    I think the next British MotoGP talent will come from a motocross background. I genuinely believe you have to master dirt bike riding first before going on the black stuff.

      @@lonpfrb All your American 500 CC Grand Prix world champions back in the 70's and 80's cut their teeth in grass tracking, or dirt bike riding. You learn how to square off corners whilst drifting at the limit.

      @@thewatchman6074 That was a golden era for sure but 50 years ago so we need something more current. I suspect that the rules on circuit racing ages do create a natural step from motocross racing to circuit racing. Personally I'm not convinced that age is a good measure of attitude and experience to put safety first, but the proof of the pudding is how many parents would take responsibility for their children going racing. The mini-bike series appear quite low risk being low and slow, compared to actual race bikes....

    I was just at the America's race in Austin, TX.
    The MotoGP swag was horrible.
    I wanted to buy stuff for my family, there was nothing.
    Not even little stuff like:
    Key chains
    Bumper stickers
    Stuffed bikes for kids
    Toy bikes
    Bobblehead riders for your car
    MotoGP purses for women
    MotoGP wallets for men
    I wanted a MotoGP leather belt
    Not even one MotoGP poster

      That’s interesting. Just about every other country/MotoGP I’ve been to have stacks of merch! Sounds like COTA missed an opportunity! I’ll wear my new Maverick ‘T’, bought online, on the next episode of OMG! MotoGP. It’s not the same as buying momentos at trackside though 😢

    “The test team is getting better and better probably the best test team Yamaha have ever had” and yet the Yamaha is getting worse compared to the competition something isn’t working
    Keith, Hodgy, Laverty, Guintoli have said many times, Yamaha carrying lots of corner speed to be competitive doesn’t work against the V4’s anymore

    I think the lack of UK talent is down to the fact that rich parents, who have the time and money to take their kid racing...do go Karting, and F1 goal is king and there's more opportunity to make a living outside of F1 for those who don't make it..its a little safer, F1 has bigger presence online. all big F1 teams are UK based or staffed.and there's no British hero for kids to admire in Motogp .and IOMTT and BSB is more popular almost in UK

    Toprak was just as fast/slow on the Yamaha as Cal, and people said Toprak wasnt ready for Motogp…. I think we found out no one is ready for Yamaha bottom feeders

    the cost of racing for a none racing families to have their talented child/teenager get to WSBK/MotoGP is the killer. let's be honest here, unlike football/rugby/golf/tennis and alike.
