Triton TRA002 3 1/4 HP Router: Initial Impressions and a Warning

  • Spoiler alert: I do not recommend this router. If you're thinking about buying one, you should watch this first. If you already own one of these, you should watch this anyway to see if yours has the same issues and you just didn't notice it yet. I will post any relevant updates in the video description or the top comment, so check back if you're interested.
    For a little background, this is a review of the Triton TRA002 3 1/4 HP router, which is the new-and-improved version of their TRA001 3 1/4 HP router that you might be used to seeing. The TRA001 had good enough reviews that when I saw that the TRA002 was the upgraded version, I decided to give it a shot.
    I was excited about making this my new slab-flattening router, but over the past three weeks my excitement has been depleted. Despite my less-than-optimal experience, I am open to having my mind changed if new information presents itself.
    This is a link to the router on the Triton website:
    www.tritontools.com/en-GB/Pro...
    The first router in this video was bought from Acme Tools.
    The second was bought from Woodcraft.
    The third was bought from Rockler.

    I think it's worth adding that Acme Tools and Rockler were both reasonably quick with processing the return for the defective router once they received it. It's been two weeks since I returned the one I bought from Woodcraft, and I just received a refund after multiple follow-ups. If I understand correctly, this is because the return goes to Triton, not Woodcraft, and Triton has to process the refund even though Woodcraft took my payment initially. In the meantime, I picked up a used DeWalt 3hp router for cheap, spent a couple hours tuning it up, and it will probably be my new slab flattener.

    Hi Ben, Mark here from Triton. First off, thank you for your continued contributions to the woodworking community - the depth of care in your videos is very evident and your passion for woodworking and need to share knowledge is something we at Triton value very much.
    A bit more about us for full transparency: Australian originally, Triton Tools is and has been British owned, designed, developed, distributed, headquartered (and so on) from Yeovil in southwest England since 2008. We’re a dedicated team of woodworkers who make tools for other woodworkers and we have offices and factories all over the world.
    You video has been of great help to identify a manufacturing error and we are currently investigating to rectify the source of the problem. The issues you have raised certainly aren’t consistent with our regular standards and we endeavour, always, to rectify any known faults first time.
    We really appreciate the thoroughness of your investigation and I'll return with an update when I have one. In the meantime we would greatly appreciate if you would pin this comment.
    Thanks and best,

Might have to send back when it arrives. 3 faulty units puts me right off. Also here in England I can’t find tra002 bare unit for sale as I have all equipment needed already. It’s good to have all same make as regards fitments but now you’ve ruined my dream lol. I also own triton Thicknesser. Thanks for your video and for pointing out poor workmanship. I realize this video is a year old, but I just came across it and thought I'd comment. I've used the Triton TRA001 for years and think it is the best router to use in a router sled because of the the thru holes in the base for quick attachment and the best height adjustment design .. again, for a router sled. I purchase a TRA002 a year or so back and experienced (as many others) the same problems you did. I returned it to the vendor I purchased it from asap and was told they've heard about the problems from the customers Triton should have never launched the TRA002! Great video pointing out the issues.

    @Tritonwoodwork - any update on this situation?
    I’m considering buying a router suitable for use in a table and a Triton was a possibility (I already have the Triton planer thicknesser and have been pleased with it).
    But thanks to this brilliant and well balanced review I’m no longer sure.
    Triton did well in responding initially but since that original reply things seem to have gone quiet. It could well be down to the run in towards Christmas and year end but it would be useful to have an update.
    If I get to the point where I’m ready to buy, I doubt I’ll be buying Triton as my level of trust in the brand has been majorly dented by what appears to be serious quality issues with the product.

  • @TigerCarpenter
    @TigerCarpenter Před rokem +2

    thanks a lot for this persistent journey and conclusions
    it will definitely make me wait until Triton resolves this issue, as this is definitely a bleeding edge = fresh from the prototyping line product, and needs to be fixed before it hits the market. by rushing it, they caused a lot of damage to this already well known brand and pretty good name.
    I have TRA 001 (2400 Watt = 3 1/4 HorsePower), which was Made in Taiwan / Designed in Europe (UK was still in EU). Your video made me really worried, so I removed it from my router table, and unscrewed the thick aluminum router table insert (the plastic base was removed prior to mounting on in the router table).
    I can assure you that my version is perfectly flat, and the base looks somewhat more hefty.
    I was looking around for the bushing adapter, both original and 3rd party, but put it on hold, as I have recently purchased a lathe, and a milling machine, which gives me endless possibilities (once I learn how to use them). So my plan now is to make my own bushing adapter that will mount to the base, and allow me to use these bronze popular bushings, which I already use on my DeWalt trim router.
    If I were in your shoes, of course I would expect the new product to come without scratches, cracks, dents etc. And obviously the base of the router HAS TO BE flat, no questions asked. I believe Triton will fix it, and most likely move the production back to Taiwan, which was probably more expensive but the quality was 10 fold better.
    Another option, which I would probably take, would be flattening the base on the granite stone and sand paper (if you don't have access to the milling machine), and / or making your own stainless steel bushing insert, with slight design modifications, that ensure it stays flat and is not proud of the base surface.
    PS:
    I posted 3 photos of my version of the Triton TRA 001 here:
    tigercarpenter.com/triton/
    My website has no content, so I'm not using a cheap trick to advertise something.

    • @TheSnekkerShow
      @TheSnekkerShow  Před rokem +1

      I thought about flattening the base, but that would make the bushing adapter protrude even more since it seats on a ledge in the aluminum. They would have been better off putting the bushing adapter in a polycarbonate base plate attached with pan-head screws so it could be centered with a cone. It would have cost more than the ABS base, but eliminated the complication of controlling depth while flattening the aluminum. Hopefully they learn from this cost-cutting mistake. It would be a shame to see another company go the way of Black and Decker Industrial, Sears Craftsman, Stanley, etc.

    • @TigerCarpenter
      @TigerCarpenter Před rokem

      @@TheSnekkerShow I think the best option for now is to buy the older version, it offers you the power you need and much stronger base.
      You can either buy the original bushing kit for it, or ask someone to make it for you on a lathe (UHMW solid base with custom adapter for the standard bushing kit).
      I chose Triton because it doesn't need a lift for the router table, and allows changing bits with 1 wrench on top of the router table. the rack and pinion mechanism allows very precise height adjustments.
      I had to remove the spring from the plunge mechanism (be careful, it can break your window or TV screen as it jumps out), to allow easy movement while in the router table.

      @@TheSnekkerShow Seems to me there might not be that many. The serial numbers look like a year/week of manufacture plus a sequence number in that week. If so your three and mine are all in a range of 8 to 240 although bought several months apart from 4 different retailers. I'm guessing all shipped from a US Triton distributor that only has a few or keeps reshipping bad ones. I'm torn about this versus a TRA001. For what I will do with it the vertical dust tube would be a big help. The horizontal hose on my Festool OF1400 gets in the way a lot when clamping down a template. I'm looking at the Triton because I'm fed up with not being able to adjust the centering of the guide bushing plate on the Festool. If I can find a retailer with them in stock I might try again. I was at Rockler the other day looking at these. I didn't know of this issue, but what kept me from purchasing it is, a small amount of downward pressure from the top of the router and the motor would tilt from the base. It is weak and would end up with a sloppy cut. As if the lock is only on one of the bars and allows it to move up and down on the other.

    Interesting video, thanks for posting this. How is the base if you take out the guide bushing thing? I ordered one of these from ebay - looks like basically new for 1/2 of the retail price, we'll see how it goes when it arrives. I bought it from a charity, which makes me wonder if Triton took a loss on the initial run and donated a bunch of them. This will live in a slab flattening jig for me, so I don't need the guide bushing, and if I can flatten the base with a bit of sand paper stuck to my table saw - or with the diamond stones - I'll be good to go - worst case I can shim it on the jig. While unexpected for a router I've come to realize few things in life are truly flat or square. My long Makita track for my track saw is out by 1/16". The extension wings on my table saw are both bowed. If I wanted to really upset myself I would take some feeler gauges to my base table saw and jointer, I'm sure they are not perfectly flat either. Even if I mill a perfectly flat board it will be 1/64th out (or more - pesky internal stress) the next day. All of these things hit me right in the OCD. Anyway, if I figure out a way to flatten this thing I'll follow up

      The aluminum base was still convex, but could be machined down a little if you're not going to use the guide bush. I got into 3d printing after I made this video, and I bet an improved base plate could be printed to solve some of the problems.

      I think it's the whole base though, not just the plate. The more I think about it, the more I suspect that the underlying issue was removing too much material when grinding the base flat, and possibly warping of the base after it was cast. I asked if they had one with a newer serial number to send me, but I didn't get an answer to that specific question. I'm still open to trying it, but I think they need to recall all of the ones with cupped bases since that could lead to kickback and costly production errors for their customers.

      @@TheSnekkerShow I don't actually have a DWE625, only the earlier DW625, so my earlier recommendation is actually based on the older model. But from what I see on the Dewalt website, it has standard built-in dust collection and the port exits out the top of the router which I find much more convenient than a side exit. Secondly, the adjustment of the depth stop mechanism is much more refined. Thirdly, the handles are much more ergonomic than on the DW625 (my only minor quibble with that model). I also has the flat-sided base that you mentioned you liked on your Dewalt router, but the older model has that as well.

I just received my MOF001 (smaller version) and it seems great and it was MUCH better packaged/protected in the box. The collets were in plastic bags full of oil to protect them, etc. Nothing was banging around like in the ones you got, it's not normal.

    Sir , the TRA 002 is a piece of junk. You can still purchase the TRA-001 from Sommerfeld wood working tools and those routers are solid great tools. I myself own two. Both have been used on serious work loads using very large diameter bits. Producing raised panel doors, crown molding, exterior 5 piece construction doors, slad flattening etc. I bought my first triton router back in May of 2015 and it still works like a champ, my second router I purchased in 2021 and its just as awesome as my first one. Interesting thing is both mine are made in Taiwan and the ones you bought are all made in China. I am sure this is coincidence as why the manufacturing are substandard.

    Great review of bad product. 3 for 3 makes it pretty clear that Triton is more sales oriented than quality or customer oriented. Looks to me like Triton's "dedicated team of woodworkers" work by the 90% rule - "get it close enough, and the rest will work itself out." You would think after doing so much work, and investing so much to get a product through design and manufacturing, and packaging, and marketing, that one of the "team" would check that the final product actually works properly. What could be more important for an expensive router (or even a cheap router), than a flat base. "FAIL! YOU'RE FIRED! NEXT!"

    I bought the TRA001 recently and was equally dissapointed by the quality. The screws holding the body together rattled themselves loose and tightening them cracked the plastic. The depth kept adjusting by itself even with the lock lever engaged. The safety switch shutter jams and the switch itself is tempremental. I once turned it off, went to grab my workpiece and a few seconds later it turned itself back on again with my hand right next to the cutter. Finally it died a death yesterday by blowing it’s own motor when it wasn’t even under load, which for my own safety might be a blessing. I left a bad review earlier this year and Triton UK took 3 months to respond. Worst tool brand I’ve ever come accross.
