Michelle Pfeiffer did all the whip stunts, put a real bird in her dang mouth and she had to be sewn into the catsuit every day and couldn't use the bathroom at all while filming. She's the GOAT of the entire Batman franchise.

The scene in which Bruce and Selena both realise who the other really is at Shreck's party is my favourite scene out of all the Batman movies.
You notice their the only two without masks? Rather suggests that their costumed personas *are* their real selves, and the civilian persona is the disguise. I *LOVE* this movie!
There's just a beautiful saddness to it that wasn't played out long enough.

I was the same age... This was the first movie I ever saw 3 times in the theater. There were so many magazines and merch out that summer. I had a cardboard cutout of Catwoman, Batman Returns poster, I made my own collage from movie stills in the magazines on a poster board, a tee shirt, my diary! It was ridiculous.
Christopher Walken's character's name, Max Shreck was taken from the name of the German actor Max Schreck, who played the vampire in the 1922 German silent movie "Nosferatu" - it's considered to the very first full length horror film.
It's fair to say that most of Hollywood's movies were inspired by the so called "German expressionism" of the 1920s (especially Star Wars, Blade Runner and most of Burton's movies) but Batman Returns is by far the most obvious case. Gotham even looks like Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" (1927)
"Nosferatu" almost disappeared. The movie was made without getting permission from the Stoker estate and they sued. A judge ruled in their favor and declared that all copies had to be destroyed. Most were, but a few copies here and there survived. Since they were on silver nitrate film,mit was lucky that any of those few survived at all.
How so with Blade Runner? Genuinely curious. Being well aware of Philip K Dick and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep... Cinematically or the story being inspired or derivative? I've never heard this so, any info is appreciated.

I consider this to be the best live-action Batman film ever made. There's a subversive edge, boldness, and sadness that Tim Burton brought to this that set it apart from all the others, even the '89 original. This is a true masterpiece.
Giving dark, almost horror movie level, takes on classic villains is where Returns shines. Sewer monster Penguin and undead/revenant Catwoman are fantasticly divergent from previous iterations.

You've two men. Both from wealthy, prominent families. Both with their childhoods stolen from them. One by his parents, because he was a freak. One made into a freak because his parents were stolen. God, I love this movie! It's so much deeper than people ever gave it credit for. And you're absolutely right about Devito. His performance is *NOT* subtle. But he's also not overacting. The *Penguin* is overacting. But Devito never does. That takes talent. Only real problem I have? Max Shreck is not nearly a cool enough guy to have Siouxie Sioux playing during his party.

The OG Penguin played by Burgess Meredith(Mickey in the Rocky movies) I always loved when I was a kid, he was so well dressed but Ms. Kitt with the rolling r’s, I also spent hours practicing trying to sound like her 😂

Over the years Returns has become my favorite Keaton Batman movie, because of Pfeiffer's performance.

Hands down, no debate, best Batman movie ever. We got robbed when Burton didnt do a 3rd.
He was technically locked out of doing the third one by the producers and studio refusing to allow him to continue the story in the same style.
Which is a damn shame, and why they NEED to bring Tim Burton in to direct a live action Batman Beyond with Keaton as old man Bruce.
She really used that whip too, the cleaning the heads off the mannequins scene was legit. There’s behind the scene footage you can look up of her practicing the scene and getting it first try
I saw this in the theater when it came out, and the movie immediately got a reputation for being extremely dark for a Batman movie. But the one thing EVERYONE was talking about was Michelle Pfeiffer in that Catwoman suit. She was the main draw after the opening weekend. Of course I was in the Army at the time, and watching this movie in a military theater was…. entertaining.
From admitting how terrified and turned on he was to “Blank might’ve been right”.
I scream laughed so loud I’m sure 8 houses around could hear me.
It was a privilege to have worked on this film. So much fun. Although the entire set was refrigerated and we all got sick from it. I saw Michelle Pfeiffer up close and I was without words. One of the future villains showed up on set set one day. That was a surprise. Amazing reaction my friend.

I was 13 years old when this came out. Parent made so much noise about how dark and violent this was which plummeted Batman and Comic Book Movies in general back then. But as a kid, this movie was absolutely AWESOME! And I still love it to this day

Location Location Fact: The massive Gotham City sets were all constructed to be mobile, and were often shifted between days of filming. Michelle Pfeiffer routinely got lost on her way to filming each day.
Cameos Cameos Fact: Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) stars reunite briefly at the beginning of the film as the Penguin's (Danny DeVito) parents, Tucker (Paul Reubens) and Esther (Diane Salinger). The wife of Batman co-creator Bob Kane, Diane Salinger, and Tim Burton make brief appearances.
Penguin Wangler Fact: The production wanted to use King Penguins, but the only tame ones in captivity were at a bird sanctuary in the Cotswolds, deep in the English countryside. So the birds were flown over to the States in the refrigerated hold of a plane. They were given their own refrigerated trailer and swimming pool with half a ton of fresh ice every day, and had fresh fish delivered daily straight from the docks. Even though the temperature outside frequently topped one hundred degrees, the entire set was refrigerated down to thirty-five degrees. The birds also had an around-the-clock bodyguard. The birds clearly enjoyed the experience as, following their stint in Hollywood, most of them had mated and produced eggs, the sure sign of a contented penguin. In an interview for television, Stan Winston told a little anecdote about how his crew were collecting the mechanical penguins after a day's shoot and found one of the live penguins snuggled up asleep against a mechanical one.
That penguin sleeping next to a mechanical one makes me sad.

This Penguin really could scare kids. Very disturbing. As an adult the character is very interesting, as a kid, freaky stuff.
Somewhere on the DVD commentary, one of the producers says something to the effect of "When the film ends, when you are seeing it with a real audience, as you come out, you had adults lookin' like they'd been punched in the stomach, kids crying, etc." And that he is, too this day, kinda PROUD of that. Always makes me glad.

This is my favorite Batman, not only the do I love the story but Tim Burton did an excellent job putting his style into a superhero movie. I love that Michael Keaton and Tim Burton worked together again after Beetlejuice. Tim Burton was making this movie the same time as Nightmare Before Christmas was being made. Michelle Pfeiffer IS Catwoman, Michael Keaton IS Batman and Danny Devito IS The Penguin. This casting was excellent.
Just to note, Tim wasn't the director of Nightmare Before Christmas and had very little involvement in it! ♥

Mr Phillips, when you pause the movie at 31:20 and looked at the screen, I said, "I know, right?" Then you go off on a two-minute rant but that look, I was with you all the way. I was twelve when I seen this movie for the first time. Props to Blank for your editing skills on these reactions too, it was a great decision leaving that in there. I know I give you a lot of crap on these comments about being the Jigsaw puppet in real life for getting your guy to watch these for us but you do a great job on these.
Literally just forgot the script, planning our wedding down in some nasty alley on the waterfront between a fish cannery and an abandoned warehouse, with a bunch of dumpsters overflowing with dead fish and rats running every which way, then the bride's side of the family can hang out in the alley and the groom's side of the family can hang upside down in the rafters of the warehouse, got that dead preacher from the end of Beetlejuice to marry us. You know when the preacher says "If there be anyone here with reason..." the Penguin is going to start some bullshit so be ready for that as well.

Trivia. Annette Bening was the first choice for Catwoman. But she got pregnant. Pfeiffer came to the role late and actually had to wear some of the clothes that were cut for Bening. Actress Sean Young campaigned for the role in a homemade costume, trying to get the director's attention. Singers Jody Watley and Vanessa Williams were also mentioned to be interested in the role.
"Why does the Penguin use a circus?" because Tim Burton always has one idea for a movie and he never shifts from it, when it works it works and you're not supposed to ask why a man who's as original as Hot Topic is as beloved as he is.
The true message of this movie is indeed a tribute to the late Bob Barker.
