- The Warriors game stands the tests of time as a Rockstar Masterpiece and underrated classic 16 years later. In 2022 however, is often overlooked due to the success of popular Rockstar triple A titles. Part review & Retrospective, I share my thoughts on why 16 years later is still amazing.
The Warriors is a beat 'em up video game, published by Rockstar Games. It was released for both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox on October 17, 2005 and for PlayStation Portable February 12, 2007.
The game is based on the 1979 film of the same name, and features royal rumble style brawling in semi-open world environments, amongst other activities such as tagging territories.
The console game was developed by Rockstar Toronto, The game was released on the PlayStation 3 on May 28, 2013 in the U.S. and May 29, 2013 in Europe via the PlayStation Network and July 5, 2016 on the PlayStation 4 via PlayStation Network.

The Warriors is more worthy of a remaster than bully imo. Best combat Rockstar has ever had, fun mechanics, the gang wars mini games, the bosses and missions were all fantastic and the score being from the actual film is a cherry on top.
They both deserve remasters but sadly I don't think the warriors will get one, due to licensing issues with paramount. They don't give a shit about preserving video games based on their movie properties.
Warriers and Maxpayne 3 are the best combat hands down.

Played it. Not only is it the best Rockstar game ever, but it is hands down the most accurate street fighting simulator ever.
Woah.. Street fighting simulator is a great way to put it. It's pretty brutal.. And there no mercy for a grounded opponent! ✊🏽🙏🏽
Urban reign and warriors. Dead serious.
Unbelievable underrated game. The score was great, interesting characters, the landscapes used were so mesmerising and fun to explore and best of all it perfectly extends the story either the prequel plot. There’s so many things that could be added with a remaster, I don’t think it’ll ever happen but I sincerely hope it does.

It was honestly one of the best games I've come across. The dialog, the combat, the characters...it was a blast (despite the fact that I kept getting wasted).

At the time, this game felt like a next gen experience lol.. Almost like a successor to wwe royal rumble games at the time
The warriors was my childhood man. I started playing it again on my PS3 and I 100 percent completed the game it was just as good as I remembered

i played the warriors on the ps2 as a kid, not many people knew about this movie and even the people that did know about it didnt know about this game. its crazy how much more story and lore you get from the game, its literally and prequel where you see the warriors form and how they get the invitation to the big gang meeting in the movie and up to the end on the beach. you can actually skip the movie entirely and you'd have a better grasp of what's going on than someone whose only watched the movie and to me thats why this game is amazing.
That's a solid point, not to mention the original cast (who were still alive) reprised their roles for the game. Watching the movie again for this retrospective, I forgot how little screen time Cleon had, since his presence was so pivitol in the game. ✊🏽🙏🏽
@@Claimer_YT Exactly. Cleons death means nothing to the average viewer, they form connections to everyone else by seeing their journey play out after the meeting. But for people that played the game the beginning of the movie is the most impactful and emotional part. Rip ash, cleon, and fox 🙏
Played it several times with a friend as a kid, and playing it right now after almost two decades, its still great
I watched the movie with my father as a little kid. When the game came out I bought it right away. I was about 11 years old when I played it the first time. Me and my friends where hooked. We even pretended to be in a gang.
haha, yeah I'd say it had a similar impact for me as a kid also. I watched the movie at around 2am with my dad, in disbelief how an old movie could be so good, and once I saw the Game Poster on the underground and Rockstars logo, I knew they couldn't go wrong.
I remaster Classic games btw, so keep an eye out over the next few months

One of my favourite games ever. Endless replayability. The combat and weapon use is so satisfying.
I think because the combat WAS so satisfying, Rockstar have abandoned the game because hand to hand combat tends to get frowned on more than gunplay!

The best thing about this game is how it elevates the source material by adding backstories and develops the personalities of the characters. Best movie-game hands down!

The Warriors is definitely one of my favourite games to play, especially from the old but gold Era of PS2, this is really a Masterpiece Game, it still remains a Classic even in these days.. ☯️👌

This is one of my all time favorites. Grew up watching the movie and playing this game. It was the next step in the evolution in the beat ‘em genre. I would love for this to get a remaster. I’ll pay a high price for that.
Yeah it really was the next iteration of Beat em ups, it came out a year after Def Jam Fight for new york, which was also a hit.. Which leaves me baffled as to why other devs didn't follow the template! Sleeping dogs I guess was the closest 🤷🏼♂️✊🏽🙏🏽
@@Claimer_YT that genre is still very much alive. The recent TMNT game sold very well. So ya, why don’t more devs do this. It’s gotta less expensive and risky than some of the other AAA games that come out and don’t do well.
My all time favorite game. I still play it today in 2023 and God willing will in 2033.

The Warriors doesn't need a remaster and I'm glad someone covered this beautiful game. The warriors needs a sequel that expands the universe, it often makes me think of the question: "What would it be like if gangs of the streets operated like this today?" Now I'm not saying we need a modern day warriors but what I am saying is let's get a sequel with the same characters or maybe new ones. Maybe expand on the aftermath of the film and bring in the original writers to bounce ideas off of or purchase the rights to have Rockstar bring in their own unique team and expand on it themselves. The universe that was created is dark, gritty, funky and fresh. Perhaps allow us to make our own gang just like in the VS mode. Perhaps even taking it further we have our own voice protagonist like the games of past, Mass Effect series, Def Jam Fight for New York, Dragon age Inquisition.
What I would do to have a sequel or a game within the unique universe of the warriors is not even a question.
If there's a company to do it its always going to be Rockstar, perhaps a unique story relative to the world already established would be the best way to go, emphasizing the drama of building a brotherhood, the twist and turns of the story. Give us action and consequence, give us character choice, apparel custimisation, character customisation, make the narrative linear or open like Baldurs gate 3, the potential is endless.
The only thing standing in the warriors way is of course GTA because GTA is basically a larger warriors, but the themes are different.
Give us online multiplayer to extend the games longevity. The potential with the Warriors is endless.
The 2000’s is the golden era for video-games

I’ve beat the warriors over 50 times , I remember when it dropped I was so hype. Definitely an OG rockstar game that hasn’t been beat , absolute classic!

I'm 23, first played this game when I was 5.... I still play it for hours like its mw2 season pass.... I can literally play this game for weeks on end and not get bored it will always have a place in my heart this game

Agreed, although to Rockstars defence, The Warriors in today's culture wouldn't stand a chance! You can literally head stomp a grounded opponent begging for mercy 😂✊🏽🙏🏽
The incredible experience of running through the streets of NYC on a cloudy night, pursuing enemies as part of a gang to establish its reputation, is truly noteworthy. The presence of police sirens in the background and women shouting from their windows, pleading to keep the noise down in the middle of the night, creates a unique atmosphere that no other game can replicate. Among all video games, The Warriors holds a special place as my absolute favorite, not just among Rockstar's titles but across the entire gaming industry. I'm now 29 years old and have grown up playing this game on various PlayStation consoles, from PS2 to PS3, PS4, and now PS5. Unfortunately, it suffers from frequent glitches, and I wish there was a remastered version available. I am even considering reaching out to Rockstar via email and starting a GoFundMe campaign to explore the possibility of a remaster, pooling our efforts together. The Warrior spirit is alive and strong in this game.

Additionally I actually enhanced Scarface, kindly included a competitors mod, gave him full credit for his past.. And he gave me a copyright strike 🤷♂️ a big reason I've been away from the channel for so long.. However a second version is in the works 💪

If you’re like me, someone who appreciates and loves “The Warriors,” you know in 2005, Rockstar created a video game based on the cult classic and gave a backstory to how the gang was formed. Myself and others believe this needs to be remade as a prequel. No one can hold a candle to the originators but I wanted to pay homage and give them their flowers. Because they weren’t good…they were “the best.”

The family was passed down to us from two generations before. This game came out when I was twelve, it was heaven. Me and my brother completed every flashback and bonus mission, we covered every tag on the game. We were obsessed. I still remember the map. The best two player game of all time
It's amazing how many of. You guys had the same experience as me playing with your brothers.
There's something about completing a campaign, in the same house throughout the night with your family member, where the warriors found that perfect balance between GTA San andreas, Streets of Rage, WCW vs NWO and of course the movie.
But yeah same with the bonus missions man, my Bro was the one more obsessed with me to be honest.. But great times

I played the PSP and PS2 versions of The Warriors.
I grandfather introduced me to the movie which led to me buying the psp version on PSN.
I used to play multiplayer a lot on PSP due to having 2 PS Vitas back in 2013.

Always cool when the family introduce a classic they grew up with. my dad SHOULD have reocmmended it, but I found the movie by accident on TV at about 2am, next day I was raving about it to my high school friends, no one cared.. and literally a few months later there were posters of the Rockstar game version all over our subways 😂
He's back! 💙 The Warriors is my favourite Rockstar game, it's not technically perfect but in my opinion has a better script than the GTA series. The new textures I think you're working on look amazing, especially the different versions of the sky and clouds man, you're so talented.
This had me in hysterics man, the combat is so unforgiving its a welcome change from games like assassins creed, where enemies just sit back and wait for their turn 😂👍🏻

This game was the best Christmas present I’ve ever had and I still have a copy and a ps2 to play it on, ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER
Truly is a masterpiece of a game! And the movie will always be in my top 10. But gosh damn, the amount of times I replayed this game + just the hours put in messing around and doing the gang activity stuff is way T.F up there! I think one of my favorite memories in this game is, it was during the “Blackout” mission (I believe), or whenever you gotta make it back to the clubhouse and dodge gangs trying to get there, which was The Baseball Furies. Well, I made the mistake of going onto their territory which was the baseball field, and I got overwhelmed with enemies chasing me, so like a complete idiot I ran into the dugout, for which I couldn’t escape and had to fight off the gang members solo which took about 30mins or a wee bit longer to do, and I just remember feeling so accomplished and worn out lmao. My fingers were hurting hardcore from all the button smashing! It was adrenaline inducing and pretty much the whole game was like that, but there were those special moments to where I’d wonder off and have to brawl solo or with 1-2 backup with a whole group of blood-thirsty gang members chasing me down/cornering me. I would love to see this game get ported over to current gens or P.C! I personally love the graphics of this era of PS2/Xbox 360. I don’t need realistic features, cause the physics were already golden!

im only 13 and i love the warriors, been addicted to this game and movie since my dad showed it to me since i was like 4, theres nothing i dont know about the warriors, YES we need a remake. its deserves it but sadly, R* isnt how they used to be, i just have to give you a thank you for just laying eyes on the game and movie

The Warriors is the game of my childhood. I am always in a hurry going home from school just to play this game. There was one time that The Warriors take over our street. Like the kids here paints the walls like The Warriors and they pretending to be brawling. I can say that this is the game that I can play in any given time. I just love this game so much.

This game was really popular in the UK when I was a kid. Literally everyone I knew had a copy, except a few who's parents wouldn't allow them, and I played it at all my friends houses even before I had it. It's probably my all time favourite game. I do a new playthrough every year or so. Definitely needs a remaster where you can free roam all the areas and not just the Warriors turf. Shame that it's one of the PS4 games that doesn't work properly on a PS5.

Would always get a thps game in November for my birthday. I seen a commercial for this when it first came out and was like what is this this looks awesome. My dad who loved the movie when it first came out was hyped that I was hyped, we went to a used movie store and got it on vhs (2005 keep in mind) and after it was finished I was even more excited. Not only I got Tony Hawks American Wasteland for my birthday in November but as a little Halloween gift, I got the warriors. Best movie based game, and all around game even with its flaws.

I LOVE this Rockstar game!!! If Remastered there'd be mainly 3 (possibly 4) things to do :
1) Punch up visuals and audio (even more on the later)
2) Keep "couch" co-op AND add online!
3) Improve the camera!
The "Honourable Mention"...maybe more side content and new game plus!

This was a game that took me ages to buy because I really wasn't sure if I would like it or not. I'm so glad I eventually decided to buy it because it was amazing.
I don't care how much people love modern GTA or how many people think GTA is the best it's ever been, the PS2 era was imo by far the greatest period for Rockstar games.
Give me VC, SA, Bully and The Warriors over GTA4 or 5 any day.

@@Claimer_YT dude I was like 5 or 6 when I saw my dad playing it and I wanted to try it, running from the bus or spray painting the W was hard for me because of how young I was at the time but I played it, the other game I played after was Scarface The world is yours and it was more mature themed, loved the movies, still rewatch them sometimes

I wished this game would have released on PC at some point. the modding scene would have went nuts with it.
i could picture someone creating a mod that allowed you to ride the subway into other gangs turf in free roam and rumble and explore outside missions.
I've been a fan of this game since way back in 2005 when it released.
I enhance games btw, so a Warriors Trailer should be dropping next month. Additionally I completely hear you on the Subway aspect. Before the game came out, me and a friend as kids imagined a Warriors game, where cops chased you much like the T1000, you could jump on the back of subway trains, crawl along the top, get arrested but navigate your way through Prison territory.

Hey thanks CZK ✊🏽🙏🏽 I owned the xbox version (I got the red ring of death! , the textures were slightly better.. so tbh playing the ps2 version years later I was baffled why it looked so bad! even so.. my brother refuses to play the PC emulated version, we always have to play it on his Ps2 for authenticity purposes 😂

It's one of my favourite beatemups, it often gets compared to other Rockstar games, but i think of it as a hybrid between gta and def Jam fight for new york. Which is why it has that longevity factor.. No firearms.. Just hand to hand combat at its finest! Glad you enjoyed.

I've been a rockstar fan since gta 3, and got every game they made day 1. They don't deserve hate for gta online, due to the fact it financially allowed them to put way more money into rdr2 and the next entry in the gta series. The warriors will go down as the best movie game to ever exist.
Yeah for sure Larz, I'm actually a huge fan of GTA Online for all the Right reasons.. The Warriors game I'm sure will have a resurgence in the future, but even as it stands.. Its accessable in HD on ps2 emulators and its still a blast to play.
Some one with some senses. I would have an issue if they did not make single player games. But they put allot money into their games which is risk that does not always pay off. Maxpayne 3 was amazing but Did not sell well.
@@John-996 true about max payne 3 not selling well, but with them allowing remedy to remake 1 and 2, I have a feeling rockstar will Remaster 3 and put out a max payne trilogy definitive edition.
Being able to play this on your android and connect to TV wit no delay its nostalgia

For sure man, I think due to its violent tone and aesthetic it tends to get overshadowed by games like Bully.
Finally the king is back, The warriors is a great game that deserves a remaster, but there are better games that deserve a remaster more than them, and I see it as a GTA LCS-GTA VCS 💪😎👍

This was a fantastic game in its day many hours spend with mates doing couch co-op and it quite possibly has one of the best soundtracks in gaming.

18 years later and people are still playing and modding this game. I know it didn't make a lot of money but i think it would now. Come on Rockstar, remake it. Most of the actors are still alive to voice it.
The game introduced me to the movie. So yeah I played the heck out of it.

Very good review. I do wish you talked about the teammate AI though, which for a Rockstar game is phenomenal as most of Rockstar's games have extremely dumb or useless AI, and in The Warriors, your teammates will always follow your commands and help you out, and enemies will usually team up on you.
That's a fair point, Im so familiar with the Bully game which I assume used the same engine as The Warriors, it has pretty sophisticated AI specifically when you rally a clique together.. However The Warriors set the benchmark at the time, it didn't cross my mind!

remaster needs to include creation mode for your own gang, logo creation, recruiting NPCs (or other players if Rockstar gets out of their own way for once), territory control, etc…
