    One thing that need to be stated for these reflections on the BMPCC4K is that thay've also implemented gyro image stabilization years after it's release. You can use them whenever you edit them using Davinci Resolve. I think people forgot about this addition, or straight up didn't know it, and that includes me.

    The only thing that is very deceiving about this beautiful camera is that many smaller & less expensive stabilization devices don’t fit the football shape which unfortunately means you are stuck with more expensive stabilization devices such as rs3 pro & ronin 2. But, even given that, I will always recommend this as a must for starting cinematographers!

    • @NickRobalik

      That depends. A camera cage with an offset mounting point could help. 3D printing a custom mounting plate is also an option. It takes a little effort, but it's possible.

      Another thing is adding extra gadgets to it. Separate side handle to give it better grip will make it even wider.
      And for rear-mount battery you need to add rods and v-mount plate. Which will obstruct the display.
      A box shape or sony fx6 style body with rear battery and separate display with BM menus and codec would be dream camera for me.

    Still my main A camera. An incredible image, plenty of features, and very ergonomic for filmmaking. It seems like it’s not, but it just has a learning curve on how to rig up. For cinema, this is perfect, working with teams usually requires a built out rig - this is pretty amazing for that, especially with all the outlets. Last but not least, BRAW! Shooting raw to an SD card is amazing, but you can also go bigger with a hard drive. It’s not perfect, but it’s the BEST camera on the market to teach you how to be a Director of Photography.

    • @RobinParmar
      @RobinParmar Před rokem

      @@emiledhaene1297 I can see you are one of those people who views every discussion as a competition and who must be right despite the evidence. "Just mount your phone" is in fact an admission that the ZCAM is not self-contained. Besides this, I am surprised that you carry a phone the size of the BMPCC4K screen. I surely don't.
      The ZCAM also benefits from a rig, so that it's possible to hold it without cramping. Admittedly I am less informed about the internal recording formats, since this type of body does not suit my goals. But when I last checked, Blackmagic had all other cameras in the price range beaten on that score. I do enjoy the smooth BRAW workflow in Resolve. It's not the only solution, but I would view most alternatives as a downgrade.
      Brand fandom has no place in creative and professional practice. I've been looking at Sony, Fuji, and Panasonic cameras as a way of solving some of its annoying problems of the BMPCC4K (battery life, no EVF, no tilt screen). Meanwhile, this informative video is right on the money.

    I had the BMPCC4K. It was, and is, still a fantastic camera for its price point. But, as a low budget/indie filmmaker, the ability to shoot run and gun with minimal set up, having reliable autofocus is important. But, this can be "fixed". If I were to add a Lidar system to the P4K, I might be able to make up for the lack of built in autofocus. In the meantime, I have chosen to film with the Sony FX30. I think Blackmagic Design would have a massive boost in sales if they developed a camera with AF. That being said, I do miss the ease of use of BRAW. As far as the sensor size goes, I think that area of filmmaking is way overblown than is warranted.

    I do believe a majority of buyers (maybe still owners) of this camera are of the failed filmmaker fallacy type.
    And I say that from my own experience as well as being really active on a BMD community Discord.
    People fall in love with the image quality and see a bunch of CZcams videos, and also learn that it's do much better than anything else they can afford. They pick up the camera and do some test shots, have fun in resolve and maybe even upload a "cinematic video" of any kind. (we used to call it girlfriend in the woods, as several newcomers did this on the Discord)
    Then they notice the issues and learn about possible solutions. Some do rig up their cameras with more gear and get nice lenses. Maybe even a gimbal. Very few people get an actually useable tripod and rely on something flimsy like a manfrotto be free or some photo tripod. (Some even pick up an audio solution)
    And it all boils down to them not doing any filmmaking because they lack the contacts or friends willing to have some fun. And so it turns into talking about gear and not actually doing any filmmaking. Maybe selling your camera in the end. Picking up a Sony or Panasonic instead because it's easier to use for video. Or doing stills because you can do that on your own, and the turn around is quicker.
    Very much a self reflection of myself, although an earlier product.

      I actually hold different point being someone who used fujifilm xt4 and now using a rigged up s1h with bmd vs5 12g and a red komodo. Even though there are groups of people who follow the path you described, they no longer do any "filmmaking" becasue they lack the love and passion, not only becasue it is hard for them to find a team or opportunity. There are thousands of small studios, indie filmmmakers, and students who are passionate about filmmaking, and they all get tripped and misguided by "hybrid cameras" that not only won't teach them something other than gimble filmmaking(hand held/ team production) but also won't allow them to learn and grow with professional knowledge(shutter angle, false color, external recording, time code, etc.) To be honest, professional filmmakers won't talke about their production regularly, either they don't have time to do so or it is so much of a work to share their full production process expecting for no returns, almost sonds like giving away free knowledge. Besides their production, the onlything they can talk with short cost and time is their experience with gears as well as a vlog sharing their life and experience as filmmmakers. Even it is hard to find teams for larger production, you can still do something, like a short commercial for local business, a cinematic travel mini doc, or doc series about people and life around you, that's what i do when i want to have fun, and they are not about the amount and complexity of tools. Tools are not challenges and difficulties, in fact, as long as you understand the stength and power of different tools, as long as you understand your way of filmmaking after trying different combinations, as long as you truly have the passion, as long as you truly want to make something from your heart, you discovered that these are tools to help you, not simplye allow you create better image, not simply taught you industry experience from practicies, as well as giving you flexibility and power to create your own film (e.g. v mount powered system allowed me to shoot in hours instead of switch the flimsy camera battery)

    I have an odd question. There is a movie made in 1992 called Split Second. It was filmed on a Panavision camera. I am trying to figure out how to make a movie look identical to the way that movie looked today in an affordable manner. I don't mind buying an old camera to do it, but I can't obviously buy a Panavision camera, since they aren't for sale. How would you go about it?

    • @Pietje_Piraat
      @Pietje_Piraat Před rokem +1

      Listen.
      I will tell you how to get that look.
      First of all it is not the panavision camera that made the look.
      It was the filmstock and the lens that made the look.
      Well the filmstock you can emulate with a lut, so that is the easy part.
      The lenses are more important.
      I would guess you get quite a similar look with canon FD lenses.
      And then there is the on-set lighting. Study the movie good to see the light sources and try to recreate it with your own set up.
      En last but not least, I watched shots from the movie and saw they made use of these typical 80's myst filters that give a sort of aura glow.
      You can buy screw on myst filters and get the similar look, or you go for the cheap and just pull a pantyhose over your lense.
      Hope this is somewhat helpfull

      Unfortunately cdng of sigma give you less linear workflow in color chain, problem in color profiling when you work in aces environment and more about lenses choose. high space wasted from uncompressed cdng that today is a not necessary (I started to shoot with first Blackmagic Design 2.5k and 4K in cdng). • @suyogmarlecha4466
      @suyogmarlecha4466 Před rokem +1

      @@carlomacchiavello I think differently. We are talking about cinema cameras. Image quality is the priority. Hence, the workflow of a Sigma FP or an Blackmagic is not that different from a Red or an Arri. That's why uncompressed Raw is preferred in the cinema world. • @billyoung9538
      @billyoung9538 Před rokem +3

      The image out of the pocket 4k can record in a 12 bit log raw which translates to 16 bit per channel color depth in post, has far better falloff, color, dynamic rage, and holds up to some pretty extreme grading without falling apart. If one can get everything looking correct, in camera, then the A7S II can produce some great imagery with it's 8 bit 4:2:0 XAVC format, but it isn't close to as flexible for a full cinematic production as BRAW. Particularly if one is trying to achieve a specific look on a budget.

    Why are you guys rewriting history. Red first threaten to sue anyone including internal raw recording in their cameras, and then went on a lawsuit filing spree for anyone shooting "raw" internally who didn't pay them a license fee. This is why Cinema DNG was removed, not because it was harder to work with. Red literally just sued Nikon over this issue.

That implies that for a specific market segment BRAW is a better tool, and in essence that is why BMD implemented it. You are implying that Braw and market segment are correlated and is the reason for the switch. The full context of dropping CDNG is that Red sues everyone who has internal raw recording. You are admitting to sidestepping the fact, but you don't see the implication of speaking about the switch from CDNG to BRAW in the context of workflow and market segment, implies that workflow and market segment are the reasons for the switch.
