This is the most important point. If you are two seconds late on the start, nothing serious happpens in 99.99% instances. If you dont spot the idiot blowing through the lights at 50mph and he hits you, your chances to stay alive are poor.
Jumping into intersections is always a bad idea. Pick a lane coming out of your lane split, get ahead of that car but dont jump into an intersection! It always looks clear until IT ISNT. Dont hang out in the intersection on a left turn either. Cool skill, but bad advice.
Love your videos and I always learn something new. Being in Florida where lane splitting is illegal, this isn't an issue. Also in Florida and I realize you just said it, the morons here constantly run red lights. I wait at least 2 seconds before I proceed on a green light and even with that i was almost wiped out about a year ago when a girl ran a red light about 3 seconds after my light was green, then yelled at me.....complete assholes in Florida. You're sooo lucky to be in California.
This is why I installed dual flame throwers on my bike. One for each side.

Got my first bike a week and a half ago. I was very slow on starts keeping to the MSF "slowly release clutch and then apply throttle when you start to roll." Starting slow does not make other drivers in Brooklyn happy. Tried the technique in the video and didn't stall or have cars up my a** when the light turned green. My confidence also shot up without the fear of stalling at the light. Thanks. Now time to absorb the other material!

Here is Aus they have us ready with a slight amount of throttle, clutch at friction point and foot on rear break so we can launch
It is my #1 fear to stall at a light with a bunch of cars behind me. It's the reason I haven't left my neighborhood yet.

Hello. I was the guy in the blue shirt! Anyway, just wanted to publicly acknowledge how amazing FastEddie is. I met him in person, and just want to say that I learned more in the 30mins he coached me than I have in my years of riding. As an extra, he put me in the back of his GS and we went around the parking lot while he knee dragged! I weigh 190 lbs, and for him to do what he did with all that weight was really impressive.

Hahahaha...if I decide do lane split....and if I decide to take off quickly, I don't go above 25 or so...it's just the initial jump to get ahead of the cars, I don't redline lol

Can’t get enough of that take off. I wasn’t expecting it! I can’t stop watching it. I’m learning how to ride a motorcycle late in my 30s, and taking of at intersections and steep hills kinda scares me. Sometimes I do it right, sometimes I don’t and frustration gets me precisely because of my safety, but your videos are very helpful in gaining confidence, which is one of the most important things.
As a new rider, this is exactly what I need. Thank goodness for a long driveway where I can practice this and the white/blue belt stops while still hitting 20mph. Keep up the good work, @motojitsu!

this is an area I need to improve on, I'm not great at getting away as quickly as you. I can get away enough to stay out of danger, but still practice makes perfect.

An added bonus with this technique is you avoid the "take off wobble" I see this all the time, because the forward momentum makes you more stable.
But that’s kinda risqué because someone may be running a red light and could hit you as your taking off. I usually tend to wait a second or two. Make sure no one is running them lights

this happen more often at night but regardless I've seen a hand full of cagers and even a few truckers running lights. vigilance and common sense is key

I see soooo many people running red lights these days there is no way I'm launching myself into an intersection as soon as the light goes green. I'd rather get swiped by a car going 5 miles an hour than T-boned by a car going 40 . Stupid is everywhere - Best quote everywhere.

Yes, you're the 6th person who said that so far and every one of you missed the part of the video where I say ensure the intersection is clear and the people on the cross traffic are stopped...obviously I'm checking to ensure no one is running the red light...I would be dead if I just took off at the moment the light turns green.
Hi mate, I did hear you mention it briefly in the begining. I just thought it is so important to emphasise this point, particularly for the inexperienced riders who might see your vid. Better they hear it 100 times than get T-boned while practicing a quick take off from the lights. Thanks for the vid.
If people don't know to check cross traffic and are just taking off like a mad men...that's on them. I can't explain every single little detail...my videos would be 3 hours long. And even I don't mention something, it's all just what I do, each person is responsible for their own safety.
The point you're skipping is that once you launch with your technique you have just committed yourself to be in the middle of the intersection in the next half second. You can check for cross traffic 1000 times and be right 1000 times. But the day will come when because of one thing or another (slight curve in the cross street, some trees obstructing a complete view, parked cars, whatever) you just didn't see another bike or maybe a low sport car like a Miata running the red light at high speed. On that 1001 time you are dead.
My goodness... Taking off like that might actually encourage people to race you at the next intersection. I ride daily too (and lanesplit everywhere) but I only try to get a jumpstart to pick a lane, mostly not to annoy people. Annoyed drivers are the most dangerous in my experience.

Well said. This is also a reason not to position oneself in the overtaking position when in a queue of traffic. Better to go in the middle but with a decent gap in front, if not filtering.
Benjamin Smith no offense but I can’t tell if ur being sarcastic or just giving stupid advice no way should u ever ride or stop at a light lane splitting or completely alone in the middle of a lane on a motorcycle that’s literally the place with the least escape routes, the worst line of sight , the least visible and not to mention 90 percent of the highway dubree and road hazards will be caked up along the middle of lanes and in the rain most hydroplane problem areas are in the middle of the lanes .. I hope everyone understands that and practices staying on the the sides of lanes with the least hazards or if both have hazards the least deadly or less traffic or the side without exits or turn outs .

May I add one piece myself?
When stopping at a red light, pull all the way over the the side of the lane (if going straight over) so that any vehicle NOT stopping at the red light does not kill you. This applies to stop signs and give way junctions, too.
I have had this happen.
I stopped at a red light knowing that a big truck was right behind me and we were both going quickly.
I pulled over to the very edge of the road and the truck - some 20 to 30 thousand kilos of it - sailed through the red light. It would have killed me for certain. It was inches away.
Here in Japan almost all (I can confidently say more than 99%) of truck drivers are courteous and safe, and the speed limits are lower than in Europe / the UK, but every so often....
In another comment below, someone mentioned 'right of way'.
Cyclists here of all ages very frequently assume that 'right of way' and 'the physics related to stopping a car' are one and the same. I have seen many cars hit careless and daydreaming cyclists on crossings/at junctions. Also cyclists here often ride on the wrong side of the road, especially school children.
As many have said, assume that the car drivers are careless and vengeful and that they want to hurt you, even though in most cases that is not true.

Going to practice this, one new thing I'm missing, so far you've been a great guide to me. 40+ first time rider on a 2013 Multistrada granturismo.. I go to the school yard at least twice in between rides to ad a new skill and get more fluent with what I've learned... Thanks keep doing what you do. Alot of people are paying attention
many ways to do this and many different situations would cause you to do this...like if you have to stop due to a car not stopping behind you, need to be able to go.

Good stuff Eddie, I was hit once because of not getting out fast enough or maybe the car behind me just getting ahead of himself. Fun thing is I ended up sort of drifting forward with my bike turned like 70 degrees to the left and I don't know how I did it but my reaction was to hit the throttle really hard while in first gear and somehow managed to turn the bike the right way and stay on both wheels. Just had a tiny bruise on my right leg but every time I think about this, it could've been really bad for me D:

First comment! Haha. Hi, Eddie. That´s what I usually do. Just to mention that we all need to pay attention to the cars from left and right intersection, not just from the two on our sides. That´s what it happened to me. Someone passed the red light and I can´t stop in time. All I could do was to try to pass (zig-zag) behind the car and I hit with the right-hand brake the tail light of the car. I´m recovering from my left patella injury. Regards.

I always pull up hard to the drivers side in stopped traffic, one day the car coming up from behind rear ended the car in front of me if I wasn't hard over I would have been crushed. But only lately is it law to split traffic in Washington state. But you don't have to try as hard as you on a gsxr 1000
Yup, we all have our own methods.
I don't think that law passed. And the law they were pushing was pretty weak. It only applied on divided highways when traffic was going under 10mph and the motorcyclist could do no more than 5 mph over what traffic was doing or something similar.
Probably wise to introduce it like that and give people a chance to get used to it before opening it up for other streets.

I keep it on the rear brake too...and if I do this...it's only when a lot of variables exists at the right time, most of the time, I don't.

Brilliant tip. Whenever I filter / lane split and go to the front at traffic lights I always sort of cut across the car at the front at a bit of an angle so they can't go anywhere even if they wanted to, and then if there's time I make eye contact with them or at least look at them in the mirror.
Some might say that some people might not like how you've pushed in and cut them off but it's ok, they can't go anywhere unless they go through you and if you're filtering in traffic you have to be able to judge what's going on because it's always a risk doing it but don't go to the front of your going to be slow and hold the cars up when it's time to go, that's not right.
Exactly...There's so many different situations...this is the basic one and what I do...sometimes I purposely don't lane split for a variety of reasons.

I love this technique. I do this all the time too. I live in Thailand at the moment where pretty much anything goes. I do it for the exact same reason you do it. And if you think drivers are bad there come to Thailand. If I see a Thai on a bike I feel I am somewhat safe, If I see a Thai in a car I am scared. If I see a foreigner on a bike I feel scared, if I see a foreigner in a car I feel somewhat safe. But here you own the space you occupy only, you can't feel safe around you at all. I laugh at all the western people who drive here and lose their cool if someone invades their space lol. There are so many people on the roads here that this is just how it works. If people didn't drive like this you would never get to where you are going just because of the volume of vehicles. You have to be on your guard 100% of the time on public roads here.

Yeah I've ridden in Thailand, it's intense. I even went down into Phuket a few times. There's an amazing twisty mountain road up in Khao Sok national park, though if you want to ride it like the tail of the dragon, you'll need some luck to not get stuck behind a slower vehicle.
HUMMMM, I haven't driven that section of road in Khao Sok National Park but I am sure it is good. There is so much good riding here in Thailand but yes there is a lot of traffic and you have to be very careful when overtaking. I have driven in Phuket many times. I love the section of road between Surin Beach and Patong Beach, amazing quick twisties with the ocean and the ocean breeze on your side, doesn't get better than that. I also like the trip from Patong Beach to the big Buddah, mostly for the scenery on this one and not the road.

Great video. I also always pull away fast at the light for the exact reason you mention, but also because then I usually have a clear road ahead with no or very few cars to worry about. I've been riding in LA traffic and lane splitting (BTW not every motorcycle rider here does it) for four months now and only once did someone (Civic) decide he wanted to race. Unfortunately for him, there was a cop just up ahead on the side of the road who immediately pulled the guy over, when he saw how he was chasing me. I only have a 310 cc bike so it's not that easy to outrun even smaller cars. Most people are real considerate though, and move to the side when they see me coming in between the cars, in their mirror.

If I may be permitted: At the intersection as you described, you managed to lane-share to the front, BUT you stay in-between the cars until you take off. I personally prefer moving directly in front of a car (either side - does not matter) even though I may be encroaching a little into the intersection, but of course out of the way of traffic still. Pedestrians can walk around me. That way, I "own" the lane and I leave the traffic behind me in the dust on take off (having of course made sure that the intersection is safe to enter and cross after green lights). Why do you prefer instead to remain in-between the cars after lane-sharing to the front?
Most of the time the cars are all the way up to the stop line or cross walk, and it's illegal to have any part of your car in the crosswalk.

Sound advice, but in the UK you have to be careful of drivers creeping forward before the lights change, risking running over your foot etc. So your words of wisdom are even more important! Better to have the idiots behind you.

I also want to take off quickly if I split the lane because it just feel courteous, people in the UK seem rather aware and will let you go ahead it you put yourself towards the front, to then move away like a granny is holding them up for no good reason.

Hi Eddie, from Melbourne Aust here. Eddie, that was good advice. Subscribed. I’m in my mid 60’s & have been riding for 45 years. From the days of the K series Honda 750’s & the old CB Hondas & Kawasaki 2 stroke triples. Although i know how important position is, observation, escape route & assumption of other motorists stupidity, sometimes you get slack & you revert to riding as you drive a car. Laziness & not being switched on. Listening to what you said pulled me back into line. Will keep an eye on your videos. Cheers mate.

came back to this vid to say this finally bashed into my thick skull the need to sync your throttle control with your clutch as one smooth movement - especially when starting from stationary! seems so obvious but I just had the best two rides of my first few weeks of riding thanks to this!

I think the phone usage is worse than alcohol or drugs sometimes.
I mean that’s cool and all, but I’ve been at a light and was ready when the opposite light turned yellow, when my light turned green, I took off fast, got about 6 ft into the intersection and a car ran the red light and missed me by about 3 ft. So yea I’ll probably never do it again lol just my experience with taking off quickly. I’m cool with being patient and waiting 2 seconds before entering the intersection. Like you said “stupid is everywhere”

Just predict they will do something stupid and respond according. Be hyper aware.

If they're only allowed to turn left on those lanes, you can probably assume that the car on left is turning left too. I've never seen that there are lanes so you can drive foward on the left lane and turn left on the right lane

There is no need to preload the engine like this, you could easily go just as fast clutching out and giving the bike gas.
The bike is sure, but the riders aren't unless they practice.

Ive seen plenty of riders who do not prioritize taking off with any sense of urgency. They just causally take off, slowing all the traffic they just split past which 1 is dangerous for reasons eddie stated as well as could piss off everyone behind you who are in 2 ton vehicles which is never a good idea.
Sean Wagner I’ve never “taken off slowly” I keep up with traffic. But it doesn’t mean I have to punch it every time I leave a light. Here it’s illegal to split lanes, so there’s no problem.

No, it's not something for every occasion but it is something to learn. You may need to make a quick decision and need to convert from a normal start to a fast one. So sitting there with the clutch held and the throttle cracked open is perhaps not the best way to do it. But do learn how to do a fast one with full control.
And remember, again, when I do this, I only get to 20mph lol
This is exactly why I’ve been watching sooooooooooo many videos I’m not trying to speed but I’m trying to be out . I wanna enjoy my ride and not ever think hey imma die as a brand new rider . I’ve always been aware of bikers but this makes me so much more aware of bikers being that I want to be a biker as well

Good video I've been doing the same for years basically get all set up in launch mode have the drivetrain loaded and ready to go, All slack has been taken up and adjusted ready for launch I usually like to feel my engagement of the clutch and then just pull out of it like you said and then your

Over here in Houston, we have a lot of stupid drivers that like to pass red lights all the time. Doing that here will mean bad news for the rider. If you’re in front at the light, you need to look both ways before you take off. I guess all the drivers in your town obey the traffic laws lol. Thanks for the vid dude.

Yes, but he covered that "once the road is clear". A lot of people calling this poor guy out for trying to help others over for the look left and right, and yes, people in Cali run reds all the time, hence the "once the road is clear", you launch. Common sense is not so common anymore... Riding on the streets for 25 years, riding moto for 45 years. I thought I knew everything, so I decided to test my abilities and hit a racetrack. Thats where I found out how fast I wasnt! Learned more in 1 day at the track than 5 years of weekend riding. Now 56 track days in 3 yrs, the street scares me even more than before. But i know my abilities and my bikes as well, so I am more likely than ever to avoid the idiot moves you do when you "think" you know how to ride.
Not bad advise, just not perfect.... well it’s not a perfect world. I used to bolt out from red lights, but one day I just felt like taking my time. As I began to move forward a youngster blew the red light at about 70 mph. Never saw him coming never heard him coming and would not be alive today had I moved any quicker. Now days I just sort of blend in with the traffic as we move away from the streetlight. I like your comment about staging your self at the right rear of the car in front of you then once the light turns green and they begin to move forward you can split through them after the intersection. Again not bad advice, but it is a little like playing Russian roulette.
Again, I make sure it's clear before going...and only if I feel I need to. I would be dead if I blindly took off every green.

I’ve been riding for over 40 years and I think you’ll agree that even if we did everything right there’s going to be some knucklehead trying to take us out. I’m doing one more track day in Carolina next month and I think it will be my last. At 60 years old I just have too much to lose, awesome grandkids and stuff you know🤗
I understand..I try to keep reminding everyone, all my videos are only 30% of what there is to say...I can't make 3 hour videos, no one will watch so I just say big points and ideas and hope people will be motivated to try things out on their own.

This was very useful! When I do this whith confidence, I’ll aim at having my feet on the pegs the instant i take off. Keeping them close and safe.
Many ways to do one thing...now I use the rear brake when I do quick starts :)
Go to Yogyakarta (Indonesia) and you'll see people taking off like 5 seconds after the lights turn green 😂😂
They do that here, they cheat the one’s behind them from getting through. I think many are texting on phones.

Hi buds! Just wanted to let you know I was at an intersection today with a kid on a hot rod bike and watched him do exactly what you're talking about - tried to get away fast and stalled it! The bike behind him almost ran into him. Your vid jumped into my head immediately!!
Earlier in the day up by Julian, saw a guy on a Harley try to make a simple left turn, oversteer, stall and almost dump the bike in the street.

Do you have any recommendations to get tailgaters to back off? I'm considering using a stick of dynamite or police spike strips for the ones that really piss me off.
That would be interesting to see, lol..I would either accelerate or slow down and change lanes and let them pass.
Fast Eddie’s Motorcycle Fun a bit of lung butter first thing in the morning...it does wonders on their windscreen...they usually back off pretty quick haha or (assuming road conditions are safe) just roll the bike from side to side like your warming the tyres, that backs them up a bit too

In my younger days I used an egg to deal with a stubborn tailgater. The tailgater HAS to stop, because windscreen wipers make it worse. I now use hand motions and ride zig-zag in the lane. That usually works.

There must be a lot of dumbs in states too. haha.:) I also use this way to decrease any risk of dangerous situation though, ive also experienced dizzy moments by another stupid cars which were still passing fast intersection from my right or left sides couple of times, even though the traffic signal already chanegd to the green. Cool. That helps but in Canada land splitting is not allowed. By the way, I noticed there is always one guy on a normal vehicle each time when I am on the bike, who will go nuts try to race me and try to win. I know they don't stand a chance but then again I don't want to break any speed posted laws. I value my driver's license.😊 So I slow down.

I've been riding for over 50 years and have taken over 25 different instructional riding courses as well as a several professional racing instruction classes and have over 2 million miles in the saddle. You'll use "your technique" for awhile until you end end up killing yourself because of it.....the best thing you said is, "...I'm not telling you what to do, this is what I do..."
NO riding instructor ANYWHERE will ever tell you that what you're doing is o.k. ........wrong as the day is long!!!
Then don't do it.
I know a lot of instructors who are terrible riders..so to assume all instructors know what they're doing it an argument from authority and it's a crappy argument. Sometimes I do this...and if I do, I go about 20mph....that's it.

Dude you just made me more afraid to ride my motorcycle.... Just because lane splitting is legal doesn't mean you should take advantage of it, there is a good and not-so-good time to take advantage of that. I'm not sure I would want to park myself in between two cars at a traffic light and then throttle it once the light turns green as there may be somebody coming from your left or your right cheating the yellow light. You're better off parking behind a car and give yourself Buffer room to escape if a car behind you appears to not be stopping...
It's more dangerous to sit behind a car on a bike, look up the Berkley lane splitting study they did.
@@MotoJitsu i always split lanes (filtering we call it over here-uk)the problem we have is angry divers cutting your space turning towards you and actually trying to knock you off ..... i d prefer to hold my bike with clutch bite and rear brake for safety . Brilliant vids by the way really changed my approach to riding keep em coming

This is why I always wait in line behind traffic - I feel more comfortable and safe doing so but I always stay to the edge of my lane just so I have an escape route like you have shown in the video
