  • There are few franchises that have gotten the short end of the stick more than Phantasm. What started as a wonderfully built nightmare world, devolved into something almost nonsensical in its execution. So we're taking things back to the beginning and deconstructing the original Phantasm.
WATCH OR OWN THE FILM HERE: bit.ly/3Fvwugu
Written, Narrated, and Edited by Gregory Burkart
Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols
    Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian
SERIES SYNOPSIS: DECONSTRUCTING is a monthly web series in which we choose one of your favorite horror movies and take it apart piece by piece (lovingly, of course) to see what makes it a classic. Each episode examines the origins, legacy and mysteries behind our beloved genre's most iconic titles... but we play fast and loose with the rules, so expect the unexpected!

I'd met Angus Scrimm a few times at horror cons in the 90s and early 2000s. He was, without question, one of the coolest, nicest, most gracious actors I've ever met. He was always delighted when approached by fans, always took time to talk to us. He was the greatest.

Phantasm was on the Index in Germany for a long time. It was shown on cable television sometimes late at night but as a hard cutted version. I always loved this film as a teenager in the 90´s despite being cutted in my country. The atmosphere in this movie was awesome and for me its proof that you can create that kind of mood without millions of dollars in budget for a horror movie.

I'm really surprised how few people catch the Dune references scattered throughout this film.
    1. The bar is named Dunes Cantina
    2. The planet the aliens in phantasm are from is a vast desert similar to Arrakis, a desert planet also known as Dune.
    3. Dune is a coming of age book about a young man who is plagued with visions, Phantasm is the same but the visions are nightmares.
    4. In Dune, the opening sequence has Paul, the main character, confronted by a woman who is basically a witch. She has him put his hand in a contraption called the GomJabbar that inflicts great nerve pain upon Paul. Paul is expected to overcome his animal instinct and endure the pain; if he removes his hand too soon, he will die. This is where Paul's mothers teaching comes into play and he survives by repeating to himself "I must not fear, fear is the mind killer." This is used throughout the novel during times of turmoil.
In Phantasm, Mike visits the old witch and the same thing takes place, he learns instead to say "Do not fear. Fear is the killer." and he uses this to overcome some of his dream sequences.
He undoubtedly took inspiration from Dune and I would love to see a video exploring this in depth because I think there's even more to it than this. I had never heard the comparison to Bradbury's book before, so now I'll have to look into that connection.

Met Don Coscarelli at a video store. He autographed a baseball, and drew blades on the side of it. Also wrote "Don't play catch with the Tall Man" on the back. We bs'd for almost an hour. What a great guy.
2 months later I met Reggie Banister at a bar. Luckily I had another baseball. After I helped him load his band equipment into the bar, I ran to my van to get it. When I handed it to him he was marginally astonished. "Where the hell did you find a baseball in Pittsburgh at 1 o'clock in the morning?!" Ha ha.
Still have both of 'em. Kept wanting to send one to Angus Scrimm with a $50 bill for him to sign. I would've considered that a "set".

The best part is it left you wanting more when the credits rolled so many questions were left unanswered. Loved it. Also I just watched The Sadness and HOLY SHIT! Growing up in the heart of the legendary 80s horror golden years, I of course saw and loved the staples like the A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday The 13th, Halloween series as well as the Romero Zombie films, Alien/Aliens, The Thing and so on. But both Phantasm and Hellraiser always stood out to me and over everything else, with Phantasm always having that slight edge of creepiness and mystique ( but damn if seeing the Cenobites for the first time still isn't one of the most evil and cool things ever).
To this day, I cannot sit and give you a definitive answer as to what the hell it is exactly about and that's one of the many things that makes it great. You can't just say " well this and that happens because of this" and wrap it up with a nice bow. Most of the time you can only see the bizarro, nightmarish situations and just look on in awe and confusion.
And let's face a big fact: was there ever a car as cool as that damned black Plymouth Cuda?? It and Reggie's legendary Quad Barrel Shotgun became as much stars as the actors lol

He said Phantasm, I was like that's the coolest name for a movie, I then went to look it up at the library that I went too on a daily bases and saw that they had it on Amazon, and I had just started working at a Piggly Wiggly, and I had my own money now, so I started buying them in order and have been a big fan ever since, it's so awesome to see other fans making videos like this. I always found Phantasm 2 to be really underrated as far as most horror sequels go. I like it as much as the first even though both films are different in their approach to horror, similar to Alien and Aliens

I feel bad for a kid whose imagination/nightmares resemble this film. It really does capture a nightmare atmosphere and is especially unnerving with the ambiguity that the protagonists may be dragged to hell rather than merely die.

About a year ago I found a Phantasm VHS autographed by Angus Scrimm at a Salvation Army for just $2
    Total score!
*PS- I think they made a big mistake recasting in place of Michael Baldwin for Phantasm II

This film haunted me for years as it was scenes from my childhood nightmares and couldn't find out it was Phantasm till memories clicked.
I think someone brought me to the Drive-Inn when I was like 4 years old, It was very confusing at that age as the memories were split & mixed up as I was looking for a scene where a device clamps on to a finger and shoots out yellow blood in white halls. Typing that into Google to try and find didn't help, but I stumbled on to Phantasm again and it all clicked.

Why has no one else pointed out that postapocalypse Mike in Ravager doesn't have the telepathy and sphere summoning that Phantasm IV Mike had? It's because Reggie's actual Mike died in IV.

Great video! My love for this series unfortunately starts with two. I can appreciate the first one strictly from a story telling standpoint but i dont find it easily re-watchable. I might watch it once every 3 or so years if i do a full series watch. Part 2 on the other hand i can watch whenever. I also like the absurdity of three. 4 has its moments and as of halloween this year i rewatched it and its moved up my list but for me the winners are 2 and 3. I dont hate any of them especially part 5….. I really appreciate the story he told there with the limited budget he had.

I have always loved the original Phantasm, and it remains one of my favorite movies as well ❤️ Sadly, I don’t think any of the sequels even come close to matching the quality, ambition and atmosphere of the first, and to me, none of them are worth revisiting, but I watch Phantasm at least once every year and it’s still so good

This was really neat. As far as the last film, which iwas pretty good, im on the side of the fence that Reggie doesnt die. He rides off with Mike and the rest of the gang. So i like to believe hes not dead.

For any PHANTASM fans out there, a quick question. Did Ben Affleck actually appear in one of the later sequels? The whole Brad Pitt trivia towards the end reminded me about the sequels. Sci-fi and horror movies have always been the testing ground for up and coming actors.

Coscarelli's first film, Jim the World's Greatest also strongly influenced Phantasm. They both concern a young boy who idolizes his older brother. The older brother trying to protect the younger from a menacing older man, played by Angus Scrimm in both films.

A few things. I've loved this movie since the first time I saw it. There's just something special about it not everyone gets. I talked to Reggie Bannister a few times over email when it was just evolving, just to tell him how great he was. Casting James Legross as Michael for Phantasm 2 really pissed me off and still does. The 4K release of Phantasm was my most anticipated movie purchase to date.

I remember watching 'Phantasm' as an 8th grader when I lived in Burbank, Ca. and went to John Muir Jr. High School. It was playing at the Burbank High School auditorium for Halloween in a double feature, the other movie was 'The Legend of Hell House' which was originally released in 1973 so that makes sense.... but... this was in 1975... 'Phantasm' supposedly didn't release until 1979... I remember watching 'Phantasm' as an 8th grader in 1975 on Halloween at Burbank High School. I was sitting next to a very attractive high school girl, so I was very aware of everything, lol! ... and we talked about 'Phantasm' as we were watching it as well... other kids remarked about the movie as well, with the flying gold ball chasing the boy around the mausoleum or whatever it was lol... how could this be? Did we watch an early cut of the movie? I guess it could be a false memory but that doesn't make sense, I distinctly remember where and when I first saw that movie... dang.
