- With just a 2.5 game lead in the division, the Cubs made another trip to New York to face the Mets. From a missed tag to a black cat to the lights going out at Shea Stadium, the Cubs perfect season began to unravel. But the 1969 team brought joy and hope to Cubs fans everywhere.
"We were so close you could reach out and touch it. Then all of the sudden, it slipped away. But everybody remembers the Chicago Cubs of 1969. They love those '69 Cubs." -Billy Williams

This series really brings back some memories. I was 11 years old in 1969 and baseball was my life. I would go to the games and remember all the great players on that team. Ernie Banks would come up in the stands and talk to the kids, all the players were great. I have an autograph baseball collection from the 69 cubs that is priceless to me. It includes HOF Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Ron Santo.
That's really great. And that sounds so typical of Mr. Cub. That interaction between players and fans is just great for the sport.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
In 1969, I was a pre-teen fan of the Mets, so I was thrilled at the way the season turned out. This is a nice memory of what might-have-been for the Cubs.
My Late Great Uncle told me stories about the 1969 Cubs when I was young and now I'm old and now I told stories about the 2003 Cubs to my nephews and great nephews.
I lived across the street from Wrigley Field in 1969 I was 6 years old at the time I remember those guys they were and still are my favorites I wish they (Ron Santo,Ernie Banks could have been here alive in 2016 and I'm gladthe other guys were here to finally see the Cubs win the World Series The Cubs are still my team today unfortunatly where I live now I can't watch them play
For those of us who grew up with the Cubs during this era, Mike Murphy got it right. That was our team and even though we lived to see the 2016 Cubs win it all, we still feel that should have been the team that broke the curse and won the World Series.
i think i had a smile on the entire series. great production.
The Mets had unbelievable pitching, especially Seaver and Kooseman. They had Nolan Ryan and Tug McGraw coming out of the bullpen. I also think Leo Durocher exhausted his players. He wore them down.
the mets were a total FLUKE. what did they do in 1970? nothing.what did they do in 1971? nothing.. btw- look at tom seaver's all time post season record. he was overrated.
Ernie Banks played 19 years with the cubs in his HOF career. he never once had a postseason appearance. He is truly a legend.
man. I "STILL"!!!! can see RANDY SLAPPING THAT TAG ON AGEE; & I HAD JUST TURNED 6YRS "HIP"!!! in 1969!!! My Aunt Carrie(huge CUBS FAN) & i were livid!!!, even tho we live on the SOUTH SIDE!!! My grandmother(my aunt carries` sister),was a HUGE!!! WHITE SOX fan. oh boy!!!!
great series. thank you
It was an excellent 5 part series about the most famous 2 nd place team in all of sports
The '51 Dodgers could give them a run.
That was SO much fun to watch....especially as a young Mets fan who's first game was the Mets beating the Cubs in the bottom of the 9th on 7/7/69
Being Cubs fans, I thought you'd appreciate a little more pain.
Yep-it was such an exciting time growing up in 1969 New York. I was eleven years old... and I even came out in the opening pilot introduction of Sesame Street! Back then the security at Shea Stadium wasn't as secure as things are today. Once I managed to sneak in with another kid during a regular game and saw the San Francisco Giants play my Mets... another time (when the Mets were on the road), a few of us kids actually climbed the fences behind the outfield wall and eventually were able to get on the playing field, running around... touching the beautiful grass and imagining making catches by the warning track! Oh, those were the days, my friends!!!!! :)
Jimmy Qualls did that
Whiner Seaver, may he RIP, never forgave Qualls( like Pappas and his nr.perfecto).
What were you feeling in 2016?
What were you feeling in 2016?
I was raised in the Chicago area and that was one of my biggest heart breaks as a child I knew every player all the stats everything about the Cubs in 1969 I still have many of their baseball cards!
@Wehrmacht Bear yep I was 12 broke my heart
Sept.10th....a bad day
A life lesson for this 12 yr old
I loved this team and I am a Sox fan, but this is the first real year I remember watching a lot of baseball. Remember watching the World Series a few years before as I collected BB cards with a passion. Spent a week or two with my maternal grandparents and grandpa was a huge Cub fan. My paternal granddad was in a coma in Florida. That's about the same time it all fell apart.
Got Fergie's auto on the Sports Illustrated from 1969 at an Iowa Cubs game and lucky enough to meet Ernie, Billy, Ron, and Glenn Beckert at Disney World in 1994 at the Grand Floridian. They were fantastic as I recognized Billy coming out of the door a ways a way and said, "Hey, It's Billy Williams." He smiled and said are you her for the fan fest, told him no but wished we were. Hi then said have you met my friends Ron Santo and Glenn Beckert who were on the bench. Got pictures, didn't ask for autos. Went in and met Ernie also.
Class guys. The 1969 CUBS were CLASS.
Outstanding !
69 cubs growing up in chicago at that time awesome time!! cubs power bleacher bums in yellow hard hats, marathon gas stations selling cubs mugs for a buck (still have a couple) sunday double headers, ron santo pizzas in a box, ron kicking his heals down the left field line after a victory, sweet swinging billy williams, fergie, bill hands, bleachers were a $1 jack, lou, vince. memories of a lifetime. truly grateful!!!! the cubs will shine in 69
I was a twelve year old taking the L to games, sitting out in the Left Field bleachers with the Bums, doing cheers, yelling “right field sucks” - all for $1. It was an unbelievable experience, and those ‘69 Cubs broke my heart. I was jaded for life after that. But it was great while it lasted.
I was at that Pirate game in Sept. when they lost in extras. Stargell’s HR with two outs in the ninth, tied it.
Even had the Cubs beaten back the Mets and the Braves, IMO the Baltimore Orioles would have shattered the Cubs dream.
This is 30 for 30 level work
Still remember my mug, and cub power t shirt
Yup..."HE DROPPED THE BALL...HE DROPPED THE BALL!" Sweetest words a Sox fan ever heard.
I was at that game at Co.Stadium
The Curse(Ronny !) of Don Young
No he didn't.
That Stargell HR was what really sent the Cubs reeling. If Regan retires Stargell, game over and the Cubs stop the bleeding. Instead they hop on the next plane to LaGuardia, get swept by the Mets at Shea, get hexed by the black cat in that same series, and, well...rest is history. At the 6:00 mark the "Sign Man" said it all-Miracle Mets.
Irony of that summer-Randy's son Todd was born, who made his debut in 1990 with...the Mets. Wore 9 like his father.
It was that 3 game series against the Pirates September 5-7 impending doom was coming Willie Stargell home run on Sheffield Avenue was a killer
Those Buccos were a wrecking crew from '50's thru 1980 !!
They came to HIT !!
Durocher should have gone to Aguirre. If he had, Stargell probably wouldn't have homered to tie that game.
The High Point or Peak of the season was 8 19 69. That was day Holtzman threw his 1st No Hitter against a Good Atlanta Braves team. Instead of getting a boost from it, the Cubs went on to lose the next 2 at Wrigley against those same Braves. That's really when it started to go downhill. 3 days earlier on 8 16 69 the Mets started a streak of winning 38 of their last 49 games. After the No Hitter the Cubs went 14 and 26 the rest of the way. The Tag Game in New York and Selma's errant Pickoff Throw in Philly were key losses, too, as well as the Stargell HR off of Regan. But the real Downfall started right after the No Hitter.
I found the Mets broadcast of the Sept 8 if any of you want to hear it go to CLASSIC BASEBALL ON THE RADIO and you can hear the Mets version of Hundley's play at the plate
Agee admitted later that he was tagged and the umpire missed the call.
@@oldtimer794 And Satch Davis was right on top of the play and let it go looks to me like the FIX was in for the Mets that year. Not really I do remember a reunion of the '69 Mets and Cubs back in Chicago and they did a review of that play and Huntley Agee explained it Huntley knew he was out and Agee waved the ring in Randy's face was pretty funny
@@timrobinson7373 I don't think Davidson let it go he just missed the call. Agee knew he was out too but waving a ring in Hundley's face showed no class whatsoever, unlike Seaver, Koosman, Hodges, and several other Mets on that ball club.
actually, I thought the cat was the "EVER READY" battery cat when I saw it at 1st. remember, I just turned 6 in late july of `69!!!!
After Holtzman's No Hitter, Cubs only won 14 more games. Sad, very sad.
I think there are some parallels between the 1969 Cubs and last year's team, with a collapse at the end after leading for so long. However, the one difference is that the '18 team has a ring in their back pocket, so that softened the blow. Plus, they still had a game 163 and a wild card game to play, whereas the '69 team was trying to make fans forget every season since 1945 and hadn't won the title in 61 years at that time. That's what made that season so painful for Cubs players and fans.
There is no comparison to the heart break of '69. They choked as did the 69 Cubs, but last year they were expected to win just like this year. Probably same thing this year, but you can't compare it to the heartbreak of '69. Did you live through '69, I was 11 and still remember it.
'67 to '73 ohhh so close
But a lot of FUN
The 2016 team has a ring 💍 not 2018
I was 10 years old at this time 11 in late September total bummer
42 days after the Don Young game, the Cubs had a better record and a bigger lead.
New York National League baseball fans didn't forget Leo Durocher.
Lots of history-both Dodgers and Giants.
@@andrewpadaetz5549 And Yankees as a player.
It’s not like the Cubs came even close. They finished EIGHT games back. Not even close.
And they beat NY last game(2 Hr's for Ern)
@@daniellinehan63 Leo didn’t like Ern when he was hired. But there’s no way Leo could bench him.
If Gil Hodges managed the Cubs and Leo the Mets . The Cubs would have been in the World Series .
It has been said only day games at Wrigley Field in a hot Chicago summer started wearing the team out and playing for Leo Durocher was not easy
I loved the 69 Pilots
Some of the commentary a bit misleading.
They say mlb gave cubs permission to print playoff tix as if that was the kiss of death.
The article in vid says that 7 teams in nl playoff contention were allowed to print em up.
As for the black cat,im sure the mets planted some catnip over on the 3rd base line.
LOL re: catnip. it's commonplace for teams to print playoff tix in advance-although when it blows up like the '64 Phillies it can look foolish.
@@andrewpadaetz5549 But the tickets make wonderful collectibles.

Ex- major leaguer
Never print World Series tickets too early , just ask the 1964 Phillies
It was SOP back then.
Always print the tickets “early,” which really means print them on time.
Or do you think 120,000 to 160,000 tickets can be printed in one evening?
That almost bit the '05 Sox in the hams....
Leo also burned out his bullpen in the 2nd half of the season. Cubs we’re running on fumes.
The Mets gave up 541 runs that year.
That’s why the Mets won.
And Leo rested NOBODY.
Getting rid of Neikro and Adolfo and sending down Oscar sealed their faith
@@daniellinehan63 Agreed, but the Mets weren’t lucky. They were good!!!
Cubs
The impact of that ‘69 team will outlast the impact of the 1984, 2003 teams that came close and the 2016 World Series champions.
The two weeks after Holtzman’s no hitter were the key to the season. By the time the Cubs got to NY 2 1/2 games up, it was over.
Durocher may have mismanaged the team, but the team was not deep. Had he rested the key players more during the season, that may have helped the confidence of the lesser players and the health of the key ones. It would be interesting to see how any other manager might have done it.
The next 2 seasons their GM spent on a bench
But the stink clung to the core
Durocher mismanaged his team that year. He overplayed the regulars and didn't use his bullpen at all. Every time he went to the bullpen he brought in Regan. JC Martin was traded to the Cubs in 1970 and said that if Hodges had managed the Cubs in 1969 the Cubs would have won.
Conveniently overlooked was on 9/8 Bill Hands knocked Agee down leading off the bottom of the 1st, then Koosman hits Santo
on the wrist in the 2nd. In his second AB, Agee took an extra base as the Cubs 'lollygaged' after the ball he hit, that set up the play at the plate.
Agee also hit a homer later in the game.
Smug and desperate Leo and the Cubs assumed that they could intimidate the Mets - and they were wrong.
Hodges platooned at most positions, Leo ran his guys into the ground.
Of course one of the Mets grounds crew guys pushed the cat on the field, hey hey holy mackerel no doubt about it!
A great story!
Williams didn't "lollygag", the grass was wet from rain earlier in the day.
why are you removing the videos
they're back up lol
September 1969 the Mets were hot 🔥 the Cubs were not
Most of the world works for a living. The rest go out to Wrigley Field.
Lee Elia in 1983 that was hilarious 🤣
It depends on the shift of the worker's job.
I was a Mets fans during that time and we celebrated that year. I later felt bad for Ernie Banks for never getting into a World Series. But we celebrated!

And the Baltimore Orioles took them to lightly in the World Series
The Pirates, who finished 3rd in 1969 played better baseball in September than the Cubs
opening theme song??
you can be proud you blew the division to the miracle mets!
the 27' yankees would of lost to the 69' mets!
LFGM
Too bad they didn't have the Wild Card in 1969...
They didn't even have the division.
@@Ibhenriksen They started the divisions that season in 1969...
If the the playoff system now was in effect for 1969 Cubs would have gotten in
the RAINOUTS really killed the cubs that year in 1969 !!!!!!!!!!!!! they had 19 rainout games to makeup!!!!!!!!!!! any number approaching 10 rainouts is considered above average !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Name your source.
My source (baseball reference) shows the 1969 Cubs had four (4) rain outs.
@@sludge4125 george castle-1969 cubs,fergie jenkins,chicago cubs journal
@@sludge4125 suspended games due to darkness are included in those so called "rainouts" too!or shall we say "MAKEUP" games!
@@robertperrella4194 Can you quote the book? I ask this respectfully.
@@robertperrella4194 Robert, you are wrong. If a game called on darkness wasn’t tied, it was an official game. If a game called on darkness was tied, the games still counted.
That’s why Williams usually played in 163 or 164 games.
After the Cubs lost a six inning game in June of 1969, called because of darkness, the rule was changed so when a second game of a doubleheader was called because of darkness, it would be resumed later in the season.
The rule was later changed to any game called for darkness.
The Cubs played 163 games in 1969, plus the four rainouts, which were usually anywhere from 0 to 5 innings.
By the way, *never* trust the memory of a player.
cubs win cubs win cubs win not
shea stadium was right by the bay, and their are rats their as big as cats.
cats were brought in to get rid of the rats!
most stadiums and arenas in the country used to do that
The Mets in 1969 everyone on the team had their best seasons in 1970 they returned to mediocrity
And the flubs were right there with them, winning one more game than the reigning world champs.
Was shocked Mets stunk in '70
'70 Cubs fell out last week along w/ Mets and Cards
Look at the Giants who were in 2nd for years with WILLIE MAYS
@@daniellinehan63 And while the Cubs Mets and Cardinals fell the Pirates passed them all and won the division in 1970
@@michaelleroy9281 Late in the '69 season, I saw that the Pirates were going to be good. They were scrappy, including winning a 5 game series against the Mets in September 3 games to 2. Bob Moose no hit the Mets in game 2 of that series. I've been a Pirates fan ever since. Even with their recent crappy teams and horrible ownership.
