- While NASA raced to land a man on the moon, the Cubs entered a race of their own - a pennant race against the Mets. After a tough series in New York, the Mets had proven they wanted to be contenders but the Cubs maintained their lead and when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin successfully landed on the moon, Cubs players and fans alike felt anything was possible.
"Imagining those guys going someplace that they hadn't been before, we just thought we were going to win the championship that season." -Randy Hundley

Who was here when they won 🏆 it all in 2016?
As a 9yr old I became a Cub fan in 69. God it was a wonderful time, and then came September and i got a taste of what heartache was 😢
Nice seeing "Rocky" on this video to give some perspective from the Mets standpoint.
PS 8:40 banner-Mets ended up being Lucy pulling the ball away from the Cubs as Charlie Brown (LOL).
Ron Santo clicking his heels was bad luck toward the end
👋 go cubbies! ❤️
The Cubs and Phillies played a double header the day of the moon landing. I remember Santo hitting a homer in the second game right about the time, according to Jack Brickhouse, of the touchdown.
And gaylord perry hit a home run.
Gaylord Perry was a pitcher!
The joke in San Francisco was that man would land on the moon before Perry hit a homer because he was such a poor hitter. It did happen, but not by very much as Perry homered right after the newsflash reached the ballpark. MLB Network's look at the 1969 season has this story including the PBP of the Perry HR from Vin Scully as the Giants were playing the Dodgers that night.
@michaelleroy. Even if I was Cubs fan, I would take Santo's heel clicking as unsportsmanlike.
I get that. It's like Red Auerbach lighting up his cigar, only he did it while the game (not outcome) was still in progress.
Hayward must feel special right now😂 hey HEY
I was 10 years old in july 69 turned 11 in late September I was totally bummed out
They showed the standings on July 21 1969 the Cubs were 4 and a half games ahead of the Mets and were going to add on to it
i like this
Nice
42 days after the Don Young game, the Cubs had a *better* record and a *bigger* lead.
I remember the Don Young thing that was NASTY
That led to Jimmy Qualls starting the next night..dang it. Mets had to wait until 2012 for a no-no and even THAT was shrouded in controversy.
@@andrewpadaetz5549 and Jimmy Qualls broke up the no hit bid by Tom Seaver
@@michaelleroy9281 hence my Qualls reference.

Walking on the moon should be compared to the Mets not the Cubs
That comparison was made by a lot of the media prior to '69..at the 8:20 mark Ron Swoboda mentions this as well.
1969 biggest choking team of all time. Go Mets. Love to watch the Cubs choke.
The Mets love choking too ! lol
At that time, the Cubs and Mets were in the former NL East division so one can't blame you.
That would be the 1964 Phillies they blew a 6 game lead with 12 to play
I like the players' clips but the fake Moon landing baloney has gotsta go.
