    I'm ISFP and I get annoyed by the perception that ISFPs are airheads. That's simply not true. The reality is that ISFPs intrinsically link thoughts with ACTIONS whereas INFPs intrinsically link thoughts with words. When explaining something, ISFPs would rather SHOW you what they mean, while INFPs have no problem explaining something verbally. This explains why ISFPs tend to be artists and INFPs tend to be authors. As an ISFP, I sometimes have trouble putting my thoughts into words, which is why I'm sometimes misunderstood. It's not that I lack knowledge, it's that I don't always know how to explain it verbally. Look up interviews with notable ISFPs such as Jessica Alba and Lana Del Rey and you'll see how ISFPs take pauses when speaking in order to access their introverted intuition. This makes ISFPs seem like airheads, but that's not the case at all.

      +Jasper Paolo I hope I didn't come off as implying that ISFPs are airheads. lol. I've never heard of that perception.
      I pause all the time and struggle with formulating my thoughts too. :( I attributed it to the idea that
      we (IxFPs) listen with our Feeling and then express it through new experiences (Se) or new concepts (Ne).
      Any idea which direction you look when you pause?

      My ex was an ISFP (pretty sure) and I am INFP. He is the author (already self published his first novel), I am the painter/illustrator. I also like to/want to write, but he would write like 100 pages in one day while i've suffered writers' block for years and have no focus (not sure that's my personality type or ADD). I also struggle with knowing what my style is or who I "am" as an artist, because Ne drives me to mentally explore so many possibilities and never settle on anything. My other ISFP friend (again, pretty sure she is...) who is a painter, will paint all day everyday without trouble and is much more spontaneous than I am. She has a definite style and is highly productive, she doesn't overthink things the way I do. She is very much a DO-er, she gets shit done and doesn't have time for people like me who sit around. haha I tend to look more at the symbolism and meanings behind something very fast (or even begin with the idea of representing something abstract/spiritual/fantastical), thus getting stuck in the thinking phase rather than actually engaging the creation process. Whereas the ISFPs tend to do that analysis later (with tertiary Ni) and value the process of the present moment more. I envy them that!!
      My ex HAD TO write to understand his thoughts and emotions. His poetry is very impressionistic and I think a lot of people wouldn't understand it. His speech was very slow and he would pause constantly searching for precisely what he meant. My painter friend (who does not speak slowly at all, btw) has the attitude of just painting to be surprised by what the image reveals. I can understand myself through inner analysis and I don't absolutely have to write to understand, and usually I begin with a sort of 'narrative' for an image rather than working spontaneously. My ex's (ISFP) work focuses on a near future (Ni) that is very grounded and realistic (Se), with characters who are strongly dedicated to their values (his values...Fi). My imagination (INFP) tends to be more surreal/dream-like and I want to write about places far away or non-existent. I'm interested in archetypes and psychological themes. I don't want to write about the 'real world' BUT my writing can be quite straightforward in a way. His world is more 'gritty' and he seems to convey a political, grounded and personal message rather than a universal/moral/spiritual one...I don't think INFPs tend to enjoy 'gritty reality' as much as idealized worlds or explaining inward emotional experiences of life (think Virginia Woolf). Anyway that's my 2 cents!
      Btw, my ex was extremely intelligent, almost INTJ-ish, also excelled in math and science all top honors and straight A's. He decided he didn't like how cold all that was though and went his own way of self-expression. He also expressed himself through his eccentric clothing choices - something I would only think about doing. The 3 people I know who I believe are ISFPs, are all highly intelligent and creative, down to earth, fun-loving and deeply kind. Not sure where this "stupid" stereotype came from but INFPs are also stereotyped in a bad light. Comes from a misunderstanding of Fi, I believe. Then people think all INTPs, INTJs, and INFJs are geniuses or something...this isn't true, either.

      @alittlebindi25 Před 6 lety +41

      I believe I'm an INFP and I have terrible trouble trying to find words (while talking) that TRULY express exactly what I'm feeling. This is because my Fi is this nest of cozy secrets that I don't want to let anyone in on. When I've had time to reflect and write it all out, I'm much more fluent and succinct, but I'll skirt around my Fi or vaguely hint towards it; I'm very possessive of my inward emotions. I also relate very much to the comment above, not being able to find my writing style because everything appeals to me and I feel the need to be that open minded, whereas my ISFP friends will bust out a rhyme or a comic in an instant. I wish I were that driven in my talent, but I just agonize over every endeavour way too much :(

      I am. Without getting a lot more into the nitty gritty I'm not sure what else you could do. I mean, you focused on the differences in the functions that we don't share which I think is the right thing to do.
      The real difference is just how we gather information, right? We both like explorations of emotions, identities, what the "self" means, what our own morals and values are, what parts of us are in line with those and what aren't... all that Fi stuff we share. It's really just that we gather information through Se/Ni, the sensory experiences of each moment and the trends that we draw from it, and you gather through Ne/Si, an exploration of possible ways things could be and a memory of the ways they have been. So... no... actually. I think you did a good job.

      For real! Isfp's are pretty effing boss too to top it all off, so nothing could be further from the truth.
      Imo
      Infp typically able to speak with conviction
      Isfp 100% able to speak with authority (usually in a work environment this comes out)
      Infp sometimes even while trying does not speak with authority (not in a disciplinary sense). I think because we're just consistently analyzing things from several different vantage points at once. We never really converge those vantage points. We like to conclude and seek resolution. But we maintain the original perspectives/points of view for reference and purity. And that's just one reason, I think.
      But yeah I should write my list of 'why isfp's are 😆boss" 😇👏 and I heart them💗

    I find there is a selfish-ness that is the hallmark of INFPs ( Sorry.) They tend to be SO in touch with their experience that they lack the ability to be in touch empathetically with others. It's like the inner voice is so loud it drowns out the experience of others. They make very good poets however for this very reason. Their inner experience is so much more vivid and front and center for them than it is for other types. So it's not a malicious selfishness...it's like they can't help it. Their inner experience simply is turned up in volume, it drowns other things (including others) out.

      I've seen that, it seems to happen most with unhealthy INFPs. Particularly ones who are depressed. It's one of the characteristics I had noted that made me feel as if these were not "my people" as they say. Because I can put my issues aside for a little while and still empathize with others.

    • @BubbleeeZx
      @BubbleeeZx Před 2 lety

      This is true for me. I find that I get emotionally cynical at times and want what's only best for me. And yes, because we feel so deeply, intense, and often times overwhelming, we can't help but focus only on our emotional experience to explain our perception, especially with our exceptionally high standards of personal (moral) values involved. But, perhaps this is also due to my past negative experiences with "selfish" people, idk.

    ISFPs and INFPs see introverted feeling differently when showing empathy. ISFPs don't imagine what it is like to be in someone's shoes to show empathy we just get down in depression and we feel for others but in a more practical way thru our second function extroverted sensing without having to imagine what it would be like in the other person's shoes.
    You INFPs use extroverted intuition with your dominant introverted feeling so of course you IMAGINE being in someone else's shoes. INFPs and ENFPs imagine what it would be like in someone else's shoes because you combine your use of introverted feeling with extroverted intuition. Intuition is about imagination.

    I have done several tests. Always turn out an INFP. I constantly fantasise about fantasy. It's part of me. I love to do good but seldom do it in the right way and alienate everyone. I feel always 3 steps ahead but find hard to communicate what I intend. Never popular. People seldom trust my ideas. They tend to just ignore me. Some say I am harsh to criticise but others say since I am so closed in myself people find my critics harsher because they are more unexpected. It's like if it is particularly shocking if I become opinionated. One of the occasions I did a test was in my leadership MSc. Only INFP. Professor comment when I told my result was, so rare to see one of you, you are dangerous, you will understand (with a smile on her face).

    What was most helpful about this was your example about how a person would think of the flower. Would the flower cause them to think about something related to it? The first thing I thought was is that flower really cheaply made? I looked at the edges to see if they’re all different or each one is printed the same. That’s Sensing😀
    But to be fair, I’ve been drawing and painting flowers, so I’m bound to look at them physically right now. A lot of these kind of examples would be very helpful. That’s what I’ve been looking for. When explaining the functions people tend to just say abstract or physical, without any examples. I really do need examples 😊

    Very well explained. I think you've used your Te as well xD
    Just a tip: in the flower part (4:00) , I don't think that Ne deals properly with that kind of ideas (like "it reminds me of hawaii..). I'm an entp - Ne, on its own, deals with memories in an unconscious way and not absolutley in a clear way. It deals with previous ideas, more properly. My inferior Si doesn't remember a shit of my previous life. I'm used to forgotting important events.. maybe in the infp it works differently because Si is more massive. what do you think? you are very informed about it.
    i would like to watch more of your videos about mbti!

      Thanks for the comment :)
      A wild Te moment appears! *gasp*
      I think you're right. Luckily, I said iNtuition and Sensing, not Ne specifically or Se specifically. It should've been explained a more clearly though.
      The example I gave felt more like Ni and Si to me because they were both giving examples related to past experiences. Not sure why I went to those examples. But it still explained the differences between abstract (N) and sensory based (S) connections to an object. Ne would naturally connect the flower to ideas not based in the past as much. In a comical sense, it'd be something like "It's a flower - it's in my hand - what if flowers grew out of my hand?! - what if my hand was actually a flower and hands grew out of it?!". Basically creating new connections.
      Si does function as a "storehouse" of relative tangible details and experiences, but at an inferior level it's going to be struggling to do it in ways an Si dominant (ISxJ) or even Se auxiliary (ESxJ) wouldn't struggle. It'd come out more for you as an ENTP as the scary reminder to "sweat the small stuff" by worrying about details might not really matter. You might fear the world closing in on you and limiting your options when you actually do make a decision.
      I also struggle with remembering specific details UNLESS I attach a personal value to them (Fi) - then they're easy to remember. Mnemonics are really helpful too, but that can be said for any type. For me, Si gives me a way to relax a bit, but also keeps me from exploring the world when it's "scary." It shows me all the reasons to NOT leave my introverted safe-zone.

    I've been going back and forth between INFP and ISFP. I rarely take others' words or actions at face value and instead look to develop the meaning behind them (trying to discern their emotions or what happened to get them there). That being said, my dwelling on possibilities sometimes turns pretty negative (particularly when I'm stressed) in a paranoid way. I do believe I'm a dominant introverted feeler, and I'd always assumed I have introverted sensing somewhere in my stacking given I'm prone to nostalgia, picking up on changes in my body, remembering very specific past details, and looking to my past methods of comfort when I'm stressed. However, I'm wondering if my tendency to focus on negative possibilities in times of stress indicates that I would be more comfortable relying on extroverted sensing? Sorry for the long post. Any input would be appreciated!

    • @GeekPsychology
      @GeekPsychology  Před 7 lety +9

      Hi :D Hmm... It seems like you said more INFP related things than ISFP related things. Focusing on the negative possibilities could be anything really - intuition will find a way to make it bad if it's coming from a place of stress :P Maybe looking more into what you like to do when you're not stressed would help out... Stereotypically, ISFPs would be more interested in acting and being hands on with the world. INFPs would be more imaginative and in their head.

    Thank you for your video! I have got both ISFP and INFP on the 16 personalities-test. I get ISFP way more often and relate to it more than INFP when reading the descriptions. Watching this video will be so interesting!
    But I'm worried that I will subconsiously relate to the ISFP things more, because I have the idea "I'm an ISFP" in my head. (I don't know the English word for this, but it's a phenomenon I have learnt in psychology class). I'm worried that I won't get realistic result because of this. I want to know for certainity, which type I am. Is thinking like this more specifically INFP or ISFP thing? What do you guys think? Also there's more of my answers in case someone is interested xd
    I can relate to people by trying to imagine what's it like to be in their situation
    I relate to extroverted sensing more than extroverted intuition. I think through situations, but not that abstract. More of things that have happened or easily could happen in real life. I relax my doing nostalgic things, like looking through old pictures. I don't relate to finding just one right solution. I tend to think in many points of view and I don't like to commit to one opinion.
    When I saw the flower I remembered having seen it somewhere. I don't know why, but I thought that the flower would be toxic if it was real, because of its colour (I don't even know if white and yellow flowers are toxic, it was the first thing to come to my mind).
    I don't ignore people's individuality, polar opposite actually. When you talked about being bossed around, I relate that. I'm sometimes logical and sometimes not. My room and desk are always messy. I keep always searching for my stuff, because I forget where I put them. But on the other hand, for instance I have a playlist dedictated on certain band. The songs from the same album are in the same order as on the album and the albums are on alphabetical order. It makes me happy because it's logical and real.

    Thank you for making this video! Unfortunately, I'm still very confused about my personality type, and any help would be appreciated. Another CZcamsr thinks that I might be an ISFP instead of INFP, because I am intellectual and strive to be diligent in school (since ISFPs have an ENTJ subconscious). However, I still feel, deep down, that I am an INFP. The way I truly love to express my Fi is through writing stories-it's like being able to put all of my feelings and soul down in a creative way on a piece of paper. I also feel like I use Si rather than Se. I do not enjoy any physical activities, have terrible motor skills, and rarely pay attention to the little details around me because I'm stuck in my own head. I think that I use Si because I draw from my past experiences often, reflecting on my actions and the actions of others. My Si experiences even allow me to predict and prognosticate what will occur in the future, based on past experiences.
    I've always gotten INFP on tests as well, except the first time, I got INFJ. I've always been a big-picture thinker.
    I love to read, and I get so involved with the characters lives that I can develop obsessions with them 😂 and I deeply relate to INFP characters, such as Anne of Green Gables and Jane Eyre.
    What do you think? I still connect deeply to INFP, even though the CZcamsr believes that I am an ISFP..

I've always daydreamed as a coping mechanism to help cope w the fact that I'm not doing that certain action irl. Heyooo, great video! Maybe you can help me understand something. Would you say that a dominant Fi or inferior Fi user would be more unapologetically open about their opinions? Kinda like an "I don't care what others think" mindset. I'd assume dominant, because it's all about maintaining authenticity and expression, but when I hear about ESTJs and ENTJs being "blunt" and "not afraid to stir the pot," that confuses me. Maybe you could tell me how lower Fi users differ from you when it comes to socializing?

    • @GeekPsychology
      @GeekPsychology  Před 7 lety +2

      Thanks :)
      Good question. It depends on how "healthy" the person is.
      We all try to defend our dominant perspective and do things the way we're accustomed to.
      So when a problem can't be solved with setting rational, logic measurements and principles, an ETJ who isn't comfortable with his/her internal world is going to have some issues. Their value-based Feeling attachments are going to feel strange to them and they're going to project the problems onto other people - assuming that the OTHER PERSON is the problem and isn't being logical. So they'll likely be over-critical and try to find ways to gain more control of the situation by removing, sometimes in a way that Feeling types view as cold, what is taking them out of their normal mode.
      And it's the opposite for IFPs. When we're "in the grip" of Te, we see people as being insensitive and not seeing our side of the picture. But the problem may very well be that we're trying to use an approach that doesn't fit the situation - by trying to solve it with our personal understanding of the moral ramifications of our actions. That's definitely not a way that all problems can be dealt with! :P

      It sounds like you're going through some stuff and aren't settling into your type. At least you know that you are an introverted Judger (introverted Feeling or introverted Thinking) and an extraverted Perceiver (extraverted Sensing or extraverted iNtuiting).
      Close scores means that the person is possibly...
      1. ... at a period of transition in life and are trying to quest for personal meaning or depth (often to "recover" from missed choices or experiences)
      2. ... in a position where they're trying to please someone and not able to be themselves.
      3. ... in a situation (relationship, family, or career) that's pushing them to focus on aspects that are unusual for their preferences
      Think about it for a bit, dig into the cognitive functions to find out more about those 4 I mentioned above, and keep on questing!

    • @manuandrade2484
      @manuandrade2484 Před 7 lety

      None of the above. I've always happened to have a very clear perception of who I was, and from an early age, when most people are usually beginning to figure that out. It's not part of my nature to change who I am to please anyone, and even when I'm forced to act in a certain way due to my career - never in a relationship or with my family - I can tell between the mask and the real me. And I keep having the same results more or less for years now.
      So I (57%) and P (55%) are definitely dominant, but I get a 50/50 on T and F and a 52/48 on S and N respectively, which means they’re very well balanced. It so happens I do seem to identify myself with all 4...
      Based on that, the test told me I could easily fit into 4 different personality types, all pretty close from one another, as follows: ISTP (66%), ISFP (66%), INFP (65%) and INTP (65%). A friend of mine who's crazy about Meyers-briggs said we all exist on a sliding scale, in all categories. Some people are so totally extreme that they can’t help but be VERY much one thing or another and other people straddle the lines. Would you agree? Does this result mean that my brain functions in two different ways at the same time?

    • @GeekPsychology
      @GeekPsychology  Před 7 lety +1

      We all have different styles, levels of awareness, and degrees of flexibility, sure, but it's generally agreed that we have a preference that should/is naturally developed. And when you are using Feeling, for example, you are not using Thinking - not at the same time anyway. You can't make a decision based on the subjective, personal value of something AT THE SAME TIME AS you decide based on "cold" analysis. Fi-Te and Ti-Fe are pretty different when you get to understand them. Same with Se-Ni and Ne-Si.
      Figuring out for yourself based on understanding the cognitive functions, not the dichotomies of just S vs N or T vs F, and how they work within the "function stack" is going to be the key.
      And how can you possibly gear up and choose the right path for your character if you are equal parts warrior, hunter, mage, and healer? lol. That's how I like to think about it anyway.

    This says 8 years ago? Why does your face look the same? Nice to not age. I'm wondering if the person I'm interviewing with next week is an isfp. I wish I could know what peoples enneagram and mbti was before interviewing because I get so distracted trying to understand the person I'm speaking with. I think he might be an enneagram 5. He's a classical music artist as well as a scientist.

    Still not sure if I am ISFP or INFP (used to think INTP but I am very much doubting it now). I was thinking I was definitely ISFP, but I ran into a video (not this one) were they said ISFPs don't like fantasy. I am a sci-fi geek that plays tabletop RPGs (GMing my current campaign) and trying to get better at drawing (prefer drawing cartoons and bored with realism despite I have to do them) and writing to create cartoons, graphic novels, and/or animations. It almost sounds like ISFPs might not be into such things. What do think?

    • @GeekPsychology
      @GeekPsychology  Před 7 lety +1

      +Joe the Bull Anyone can like anything. I think "ISFPs don't like fantasy" is not true at all. ISFPs like things that express their internally held values and identity - whatever genre that is.
      I think what was trying to be said has to do with extraverted iNtuition (Ne) vs extraverted Sensing (Se). Ne likes uh... flights of fantasy :P Se likes more realistic approaches. But that's the supporting, auxiliary functions method of communicating introverted Feeling.
      Does that help? Or did I confuse things? lol

    Can someone peg my thought process here? When you pulled out the flower, my thoughts were: why does he have that; what is it made of; why was it designed that way; my femininity/womanhood; why you said "one-dollar store" the way you did; whether you're indeed a creative type. Yes, all of this zipped through my mind in a matter of seconds. Is this introverted thinking??

    • @GeekPsychology
      @GeekPsychology  Před 7 lety +1

      +Ari 8 I can't say for sure, but if I made a instant, gut-instinct guess, I would just assume it was introverted intuition... trying to piece the ideas together holistically... you weren't really making judgements or decisions on things, just being inspired by what you saw.
      And why I said "one-dollar store" like that was because I bought it at the 100 yen store and didn't know what to say :P Not that you were necessarily asking, but that's why. :) I had tons of them stuck all around my house in a Hawaiian theme. Glad there was one nearby!

      Sure, why not? :) If people are healthy, in love, and aware of how they judge/perceive, anything can work out! There are a lot of similarities in the two, and a lot of benefit you each can get from leveling up your auxiliary functions.

    is it possible to be in between?

    • @GeekPsychology
      @GeekPsychology  Před 8 lety +9

      Nice name :)
      My understanding is like this: Your type is all about preferences that get neurologically hardwired through use. The more you use one, the faster, easier, and more reliable (generally) it is. If you are, say, an INFP, you prefer abstract pattern recognition over real-time sensory details. You've taught your brain to favor it. So now your brain takes the easier (and more trusted) path.
      There will be times that you dabble in the other. If you didn't, your perceiving / learning ability would be drastically hindered. This would mean that if you were an ISFP, you'd only notice what's happening in the real world around you in a literal sense - you wouldn't be able to envision different contexts. Or the opposite.
      That'd suck, right?
      Also, the more aware of this you are, the better you'll get at realizing that it's a problem if you don't take in information from different sources.
      TLDR - You use both at times, but you prefer one. That one will come more naturally.

      No you cannot be the mix of those 2 plus tests aren't accurate I get INXX on em mostly INTP now and I rarely get INFP on them.
      Go and study the cognitive functions because you can end up being an ISFP the main difference between INFP and ISFP is that ISFPs use Se and NI while INFPs use Ne and SI.
      Also use this video because it's very helpful
