Snake Hole Pit Shelter 2021

  • Roughly 10 years ago I filmed a shelter called the snake hole pit shelter. It was quite crude but a lot of fun! Over the years I've made a few additions so I thought it would be cool to show the updated version. Especially since I got a new shovel to try. Lol.

    I watched another CZcamsr get his subscriber count up quickly & I believe Dave deserves WAY more than he has for all the hard work over many years. If like me, you agree, PLEASE scroll down under this video, to the next recommended video of his & watch it all the way through (even if you’ve seen it before) that way Dave’s subscriber count will go up as he’ll be recommended all over YT. If every viewer who loves his videos does it on every video he released, we can get his channel boosted up for him. I want to see you have the recognition you deserve Dave (and I know you won’t ask for it yourself which is why I’m telling others how to do it) and of course I love everything you put out. There’s no one like you here on YT & I appreciate you. You always have fantastic ideas & tips n tricks, always knowledgeable. This video was so much fun to watch. Dave, I remember learning something very important from you regarding camp fires. You took us to an underground forest fire. The fire was spread via the trees root systems being on fire. I've never seen anyone else cover topics like that.

      I don't know who that would be.
      I dearly appreciate what I learned from you on such a serious topic. You didn't just talk about it. You showed us the reality of an ongoing undergroud forest fire and trees burning from the inside out.
      You taught us to not leave any embers still burning and the consequences.
      Something I learned from Time Team is that the root system of a tree is basically the same diameter as when the tree is in full foliage.

    Awesome! Dave in the morning 😁😁 can’t wait! .. I remember the first shelter you did this way.. this version is definitely less fussy 😁 lol .. if you’re filming in full sun, and glare is an issue, have you looked at that tripod umbrella I mentioned a while back?? Because if you can get the umbrella up over the camera, it’ll block sun nicely too.. not just rain 😁😁 .. thanks for sharing as always Dave! Love to see what you’re up to! ATB~Ruth

      @Reallybigmonkey1  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Ruth! I'm glad you liked it. I have tried the umbrella thing, I have an extra tripod set up that way for rain and snow and its a lot of trouble because its top heavy. This shelter could save your life. You can get it up quickly, and I think it will keep you dry. And, if you were stuck "out there" for a while, you could improve the fire pit by creating a hearth in front of it. The tarp strung up in those trees is also a great thing for added protection and to keep the fire going in wet weather. Outstanding, and thank you so much.

    Dave, I know you stipulated right up fromt that this layout isn’t for rain shelter, and thinking it thru tends to bear this out. But that said, if one got surprised by a sudden rain that didn’t drag on, there’s no reason that misery need ensue as it looks good for a few hours at least? I loved how warm and out of the wind the setup ends up! Looks great for unexpected, overnight cold snaps! In my minimalist camping days - before I graduated myself to a small towed camper - I always felt that I was building skills that would serve me well in a natural or man-made disaster or civil unrest scenario. This video presents a practical solution that should allow pitching camp and next day striking and moving on readily! Solving the riddle of safely “tenting with fire” is highly commendable! THANKS!

Often times many people expel too many calories making shelter, the trick is to make one that is quick, low, dry and blends that allows you to keep on the move.

    Hey man, :) I am liking that shovel, longer handle means more leverage. I agree man, certain shelters are made for stopping wind chill and trapping heat, like this one. Love the shelter Dave! Such a simple way to incorporate a fire into a shelter. Glad to see you break in the Jeep shovel. After you showed it a while back I ordered one for myself and my brother. I got two of the surplus entrenching tool covers and modified them like you did. Haven’t used it yet but it looks like the size is just right for camping. More leverage than the folding entrenching tool for sure. I’m definitely ready to find a spot to set up a snake pit shelter and hopefully use it repeatedly. Be safe during the outage brother. Ours just got pushed back to May.
