School Bus Conversion into Tiny Mobile Home that Runs on Waste Vegetable Oil

  • Zola converted this 24 foot school bus into a functional tiny mobile home on wheels that runs on free waste vegetable oil collected from restaurant deep fryers. Zola's Fire Dancing Facebook Page: / zolamolotov
    Following a freegan philosophy, she attempted to reuse and scavenge many materials for the skoolie bus conversion, including the sink and propane stove that were given to her in exchange for demolishing an old trailer.
    She and several friends worked on the camper tiny house so they could use it as a tour bus for their multi-disciplinary fire shows which they performed all over Eastern Canada.
    To see photos and videos of Zola Molotov's fire dancing performances, check out her website here: zolamolotov.org/
    The waste vegetable oil system (WVO) or straight vegetable oil system (SVO) was installed by a diesel mechanic that Zola prefers to keep anonymous.
    When collecting waste veggie oil from restaurants, she uses a fuel transfer pump to get it from the dumpster into one of her 55 gallon oil drums. Once it the drum is full, she filters the oil through a filter bag, and funnels it into the second drum, which is the burn barrel (the fuel tank that is hooked up to the engine).
    A hotfox system was installed to run warmed coolant through a pipe in the oil drum to heat the oil to the same viscosity as diesel so that the waste vegetable oil can enter the engine smoothly. Before getting to the engine, the oil runs through a water separator filter, and a second filter to ensure there is no water or food residue in the oil.
    The Hotfox (coolant operated tank heater) and oil filter bags that Zola mentions in the video are from the PlantDrive online store in BC, Canada: plantdrive.com/
    A diesel engine that has been converted to run on WVO still has it's original diesel fuel tank because the engine needs to run on diesel for approximately 5 minutes at the start and end of each trip to ensure that there is no WVO left in the engine when it's not running because it would solidify and make it difficult to start the engine again the next time.
    Zola's performance website is Zola Molotov: zolamolotov.org/

    I had a Green Energy/Environmental teacher in highschool that had a friend with one of these. We went on a field trip on it. Me and my buds were going to smoke a joint in the back, (he had a seperate bedroom in his), but were respectful instead. Though we didn't smoke, Hoax and Co. got Donue super baked and we all did the "Donue Dance" on the bus later on. That was a good class.

    I have a friend who ran his Isuzu truck on veg oil all the time, it depends on the engine. The exhaust from his truck smelt of egg and chips, I always felt hungry when I was in his van 😀 In the U.K. Veg oil is a legal taxable fuel.

      I've always maintained that the ONLY tough people on Earth are the ones that have taken a dump outside. From Soccer Moms to Green Berets, it doesn't matter. If you've shat outside, you have separated yourself from the rest, and placed yourself among elite company. It's pretty-much like losing your virginity. You've either done it, or you haven't. And your life is never the same afterward. No one can do this for you either. And you can't experience it vicariously. So if you've managed to see another person crapping outside, you STILL don't have membership. And if you sacrificed one of your socks to wipe when you were (almost) done, you're on Instructor status. Be proud of that.

    What a lovely young woman. Wish her luck in her acting career. Or, she could sell her bus & open a cocktail bar.
    Thank you for the tour of her system. It was really informative.
    I used B-20 biodiesel in my truck for years. (It's 20% vegetable oil, 80% petroleum diesel.) My Cummins N-14 had about 600,000 miles when I first tried biodiesel. After driving only 50 miles, my engine was eerily quiet. It ran smoother & seemed to have a bit more power. I was sold on biodiesel. Sold the truck when the clutch failed again, but it was still running strong with over 1,200,000 miles on it.
    I once tried 80% veggie oil, but never 100%.

      The original diesel engine ran off of vegi oil. There are a handful of people that run their vehicles this way. I have personally seen two. I have even heard of people using vegi oil to warm their garages in Alaska when I lived there. Basically the oil goes to a stove and circulates. However, it seems a bit dangerous (structure fires??).

      philzambo Gasoline, even though it's a diesel bus?

    • @philzambo
      @philzambo Před 7 lety +10

      It acts as a solvent and changes the gelling point of the veg oil, if you add the gas before filtering, the oil runs through the filter bag 10 times as fast, it stops insects and animals from eating the fuel and adds some extra power to the fuel.. Never use bio-fuels or veg oil in common-rail diesel engines, Bosch V series pumps as fitted to older VW/Audi group diesel engines seem to tolerate alternative fuels the best. Good luck with the bus

    • @ritaadams8379
      @ritaadams8379 Před 7 lety +3

      philzambo Thanks! A bus has been a dream of mine for a long time. Veggie oil vs fuel seems like a fantastic alternative.

    • @philzambo
      @philzambo Před 7 lety +5

      This only works with older style diesel injection systems, common-rail injection will not handle bio-fuels, VO or WVO. Before winter additives were added to diesel fuel, Mercedes in their old handbooks recommended adding 15 - 30% gas in their diesels in areas that experienced extremely cold temperatures.

    You can always tell when a veggie oil vehicle drives by, it smells ......like french fries.

    Wonderful! But where do you keep your food/pantry items and where do you keep your clothes? Biofuel sounds great - a wise use for waste products.

    Let's not forget: vegetable oil is taxed the same way as diesel and this can run you in some issue depending in where you are. Do you research people! ;)
    Also, this conversion might not follow your local guidelines and laws for safety.

      I like it when people feel so inclined to stick to rules they make up while they go.
      Hope that gives you a safe feeling. Don't draw outside the lines, you might one day do something extraordinary!

    She seems like an awesome person! Your videos are so very interesting. I'm planning on buying a used large van and convert it to a camper. My only worry is that there aren't many trailer parks and sewage hookups in my area.
