- Join us as we explore Folkestone, a charming seaside town in Kent. This is our third visit to the area, and we're finally checking out the place our friends Jason and Josh recommended. We start our day at the harbour, where an old train station has been transformed into a vibrant pedestrian area with food and shops. We then head up the Creative Quarter, a steep street filled with independent shops, and enjoy some well-deserved cream tea. We take a walk along the cliffside and down through the zigzag path and make our way back to the Harbour Arm to try some delicious food from local vendors.
Any other places we should visit on the South coast? Leave a comment and let us know!

Theres a lot of "picturesque" seaside towns/villages in the UK. St Ives, Tenby, Whitby, Mousehole, Robin Hoods Bay, Portmeirion, Salcombe and Bamburgh. To name a few
They’ve been to a few of them already.
...But Folkestone isn't one of them...
sidmouth! and pretty much any wee seaside town in cornwall. looe!
I'm not sure I'd count Bamburgh as a seaside town, apart from those weird Rubik's cubes on the beach. Not been to Robin Hoods bay or Salcombe, so thanks for heads up.
I like how you pronounce British place names properly. I was bracing myself for "folk stone" but you got it spot on with "FOLKst'n".
almost...the L made an appearance. There is no L in folk
Wonderful to see you enjoying our wonderful South Coast
The harbour wall is really nice, but where those monstrous new build apartments are, their used to be a really great amusement park. The centre of which had a listed building called the Rotunda, it was ‘accidentally!!!!’ demolished, the same guy that owned it was a very unlucky person as so many of his places caught fire over the years!!!!!.
There also used to be a really good nightclub in the seafront called la parisienne.
I had a summer job on a funicular railway one year. I quite enjoyed it, but it had it's ups and downs!😂😂😂😂😐
Folkestone is one of my favourite fossil hunting spots, great for ammonites.
Kudos to your volunteer guides, that was very good of them to show you around.
I live in Folkestone, used to live in Falmouth where you've also been! Both are beautiful places, but Folkestone has so much going on and it's so close to London too, and France for a little day trip.
I loved Folkestone in my teens. Tofts, Leas Cliff Hall, The Grand, Odeon Bar and if missed bus home, tent down the Warren. Such different times. Pleased to see what they've done to it now.
Love when you go out with Jason and Josh! Feel better Jeremy~ ❤❤❤
Whoa!! My childhood memories right there! My grandparents lived on the Leas on Clifton Crescent. I was born in Sandgate, just down the road. We would go down to the Rotunda Penny Arcade through the park and back up via the funicular. That was over 50 years ago. We went back recently, so I know it’s so good in Folkestone these days. Best seaside town? It’s certainly a contender. I love seaside towns! I sort of collect them by visiting. I also love estuary villages and towns.
did you get your 1/2 pint of whelks from chummy's on saturday? plenty of white pepper and chilli vinegar - good times. used to live on sandgate high st just down from the now saga building. jimmy godden was a local legend back then.
Fab lil video of my home town. I hope you were able to see France, i still never get get bored of that
Thank you! We've been to Paris briefly a couple of times. We need to go back and make a proper visit.
Would love to see longer-form videos from y’all! It would be such a treat ❤
I am so glad you enjoyed visiting Folkestone my hometown. It's a superb place and hope you return again. Hopefully in the sunshine although it's also cool when it's cloudy and windy.
I enjoy your videos very much
I must admit that I've never heard Folkestone described as being 'cool'. Perhaps I should revisit at some point as it definitely looked rather run down and derelict last time I was there. Come to Eastbourne sometime if you haven't already been, but probably best in the summer. The seafront from the pier and to the west is rather nice and then the walks around Beachy Head and the cliff edge overlooking the lighthouse has some stunning views
Millions have been spent on Folkestone in the last 10 years and it has been totally transformed.
Give it a visit.
As someone who is growing up in Folkestone, the image of us being some old harbour town that's gone to shit is kinda the image of what we (at least the people I've spoken to) want put out there. Lots of money has been put on the town but it's mostly eh looking art projects that have been put in odd locations or out of place modern buildings that make it look ugly. Partially the fact that lots of people are coming here is the fact so much development has been going on and that's why we don't want people coming. A town gotta grown one way or another but this I think is a little forced
Big drug problems...crack heads...my friends moved there few years ago.
That new build on the beach is the one with the noisy balconies I saw on the news, apparently the wind whistling through makes this really irritating hum that's driving nearby homeowners nuts😂
As an adopted Folkie I'm so glad you've finally visited! One thing you didn't mention was that it's home to the UK's largest collection of public artworks. Some of the things you saw - the seagull and the wording on the lighthouse for example are a part of the collection.
I used to live in Folkestone! 😊
Loads of history and beauty.😊
I live in that classic circuler building, it's got amazing views
My favourite place in Folkestone is the sandy beach with the arches. In the 70's I loved the rotunder. Does anyone remember the Dalek that kids could ride Fairley near to the sandy beach>
Kids could ride a Dalek!? I want to do that as an adult! 😂
I used to leave bearby but never visited Folkestone. Im so thankful that you shared this
If you want to visit a great seaside town, you should visit Teignmouth in Devon. It's also the birth place of the band Muse.. if that interests you. It's close to Torquay and Exeter. The train goes from Paignton to Plymouth with loads of stops on the way. Teignmouth is really central and has great connections to neighbouring towns and villages.
Agree I don't think there's better places in England than Devon and Cornwall both stunning
There are some lovely places along the south coast of the country. Folkestone is one I haven't yet been to and I've lived 50 miles away for decades. Thanks for the recommendation!
So, in the First World War, British soldiers left for the Western Front from Folkestone. Nearby Dover was reserved for the returning troops and wounded so those going out would not see the condition of those coming back. The "St Louis Arch" is actually the "Short Step Arch". It is the point where the marching troops were ordered to "short step" as they descended the hill to the Harbour Arm to board their ship. For many, this was the last time they would ever set foot in England. The hill is currently closed owing to a landslip but the railings are decorated with memorial poppies. So moving.
Enjoyed all your videos.
I'd say that Barmouth is my very fave UK seaside town but there are so many out there... I must visit Folkestone one day, thanks for the recommend!
looking forward to hearing about your travels on the continent.

Hi, just reading an old magazine and read an article on Arundel in West Sussex, might be worth a look, nice looking castle as well.
See my comment Portsmouth
Great video although Folkestone is spelt with an e in it 😂😂so pleased you enjoyed the town we love it there
Whitstable is nice and Broadstairs. Ramsgate is worth a look too. Margate use to be nice but its a bit rundown now, but it’s changing again overtime with new investment in the area. A lot of our seaside towns have suffered neglect and lack of investment due to cheap package holidays abroad.
Very nice
Thanks
Great video. Really sorry your husband rolled his ankle, that really hurts, hope he gets well very soon xx
always love your videos sorry I’m late.I hope Jeramy is felling better.❤
If you haven't already tried it you should go to a fish and chip shop and ask for a deep fried Mars bar! You might be asked to supply the Mars bar? But this is a fun treat, but don't eat it straight away, the sugar in the Mars bar is incredibly hot, let it cool down a bit before biting into it. I love the beer batter around the Mars bar.
I live in a village on the white cliffs you can see from the Harbour Arm. Folkestone is really a town of two halves the Upper Leas is a lovely promenade walk with many buildings reminding you of its Edwardian heyday, In fact the West of Folkestone is quite nice. The Lower Leas Coastal Park, Harbour Arm, The Warren and the Creative Quarter around the Old High Street are; well worth a visit. The High Street area (Sandgate Road) is not great though and the east side of Folkestone is a bit run down. Id say worth a weekend or day trip definately.
You should check out the eden project, thats quite an interesting experience
I did love your channel, guys.. Thank you very much for your videos.. they have helped me a lot. I am going to the UK next year and I am getting many ideas of places just because of your amazing videos. Thank you so much.. Is there any chance you would visit these places?
- The Island of Man
- Chester
- Blackpool
- Derby
- Preston
- Inverness
- Blackburn
I am looking forward to seeing your next videos and what you guys are up to..
That took me back...I haven't been there in years...the Funicular was working then
Mr GST grew up in this neck of the woods and he doesn't remember Folkestone looking so nice!
When you're back in the UK, we'd love to share Cambridge with you 😊
My home town for the first 17 years of my life!
Ahh no way 😊 I am a born and bred Londoner, early memories of a family holiday down Folkestone when my nan was still alive, sometime around 1993 🙂 my first and only visit to Folkestone 30 years ago 😂
Just noticed you spelt it wrong in the title 🤣🤣🤣
"I hope there's no bears in here" lol
It could be Portsmouth or Paris or even Thailand but there is only one place and that's Stoneybridge for the Highland
Games
Visit Portsmouth... that's a seaside town with so much history you won't know what to do with yourselves. Charles Dickens, Henry VIII Gunwhart... Southsea... IOW for a day... you will never forget it ❤
Guess what. Nottingham Castle officially reopened in June this year (2023). Shame it was closed when you went there. Next time you come back to the UK maybe ?. Folkestone looks very nice, never been there myself.
Have you done Cornwall & Devon?
Great vid guys. I’ve lived in Folkestone since 1979 and feel so proud to still be here. I think it’s one of the best places in the southeast 👌
I thought Folkestone Harbour Station was infinitely more cool when you could walk straight off a train onto a Channel ferry, as I did on a school trip back in the late 1960s. I will admit that watching your luggage being slung aboard in a net with a derrick was mildly disconcerting, but foreign travel still retained some sense of adventure back then.
IMO Scarbrough is UKs best seaside town
No way your in my Hometown did you try Sandy's best fish and chips around and those new flats are called tinnitus Towers because when winds they make loud whistle sounds
@1.39. remembrance road, i think it's called ah road of remembrance. called so because it was a road used by the troops on their way down to the harbour to board the ships to france. ok there are some historically cool places there. just the locals that make it bad lol.
i can say that as i lived there for 10 years. @2.36 the leas lift tracks. i had to abseil down there to clean the foliage on the tracks and to the right of there about 100 yards, i spent 6 months hanging off a rope to level the cliff bank down and turf it. was great fun.
Its a shame you are both leaving the UK, as its been great having you here. When you go to Europe next good luck if you end up in France, you'll need it. Get plenty of wet wipes and sanitizer!
hmmmmmmm folkestone cool? had a cool job the though back in 2001ish stablising landslips along the leas by the leas lifts. my son and daughter still live there but yeah cool? not quite. though during the summer the harbour is nice to mingle about
The residents of those new apartments with the metal balconies are complaining about a loud noise that occurs when it's very windy there at nighttime.
ah dang. i'm a 10 year immigrant here! i bloody always get names wrong. i thought this was FOLK - STONE. no idea it was folk - stun. cornwall? nothing is said as it looks! lol.
A resort without a sandy beach can't be the best.
There's a beautiful Sandy beach in Folkestone called sunny sands and it has one of the highest sun indexes in the country there's also a stunning natural Sandy beach called the Warren they obviously didn't have time to visit
It does have a sandy beach round the back of the harbor!
I've visited seaside towns all over England and Wales, and they are all very beautiful. However, I'm always partial to the Northeast coast, Whitby, and surrounding areas.
Its a bit too chilly up there tbh.
We are world renowned as a nation of dog lovers! You can even take them in pubs as long as they don`t serve food.
Come to Portsmouth which is the home of the Royal Navy for some proper British history and some new friends.
I’m my opinion St. Ives is the best seaside town 😊
No.
(Went to junior high school there and hated it)
Ref Title: Probably not to be honest.
Sorry you guys, but St. Ives Cornwall has to be the best and most picturesque seaside town. Only my opinion of course.
No. Blackpool guys
No. 😊
No deai just up the road is by far
I used to live there for 4 years and I can safely say It's definitely not the best seaside resort, my analogy is that they have tried to spray air freshener on dog poo.
I’d say that Folkestone isn’t the best Seaside Town. It looks a bit run down to me.
Is Folkstone the best English seaside town?? 😂😂. You must have become prone to English sarcasm! Few Brits would put Folkstone among the top 50 English coastal towns. There isn't space here to list 50 better towns, but start with Weymouth, Poole, Wells-Next-the-Sea, Dartmouth, or Shanklin.
Folkestone*
The Times and Telegraph have both named Folkestone in their top 10 it's changed a lot in the past 10 years
The last few years Folkestone has really come a long way. It's a really nice place to live, there's a lot going on,it's arty and there's a fast train to London for work or pleasure 😅 I love it.
No it's not.
Tips for Folkestone:
1:Don’t go to party bar
2:Don’t go out at night
3:don’t go there
4:don’t speak to Eastern Europeans here
absolutely not. it’s a crack den.
I heard that...most UK seaside places are shit tips
No, no it’s not.
Hahahaha You have got be joking Folkestone is a dump, closed shops , litter, graffiti, drugs, and run down areas Folkestone is finished
Personally I don’t rate Folkestone at all. As for UK’s Best Seaside town? That’s has to go to Bournemouth, St Ives, Margate, Newquay to name but a few…
Margate and Bournemouth are druggy
