Today we'll be talking about the development process of the videogame, My Little Pony: A Maretime Bay Adventure! Thanks to an animator who worked on the game, DJTHED, we'll be going over why the game is the way it is... Will this new behind the scenes information change your opinion on the game? Let's find out ^^

DJTHED is a based creator. I may not like the games he animates for, but I have a lot of respect for his work.
It's honestly impressive that 17 people made that game in 11 months! For reference, the 2023 Spiderman video game had a team of hundreds, and cost $300MILLION. Of course a team of 17 cannot match the expectations of gamers used to hundred-million-dollar games. But just by making the kind of 3D game they did, DJTHED and MELBOT were punching way above their weight class! Well done, guys!
After 14 years they still don’t know they have an older audience. Well, they used to. The ads for example are sometimes targeted to older people. But it feels like a new manager is coming on it’s place every 1 year not knowing anything about the fans of the franchises Hasbro owns.
They even made Episode 100 as direct fan service to the older fans, debunked and confirmed ships etc. They knew, they just like to pretend they don't.
@@LarsaXL no that’s the people that work and develop the products. It’s the managers and higher-up. Just like shown in the video. The level got more simple just because it wasn’t playable for 4 year olds. That’s what the managers decided.
I don’t even expect those middle aged business men to understand that adults want a my little pony game, or what ships are ect
@@FluoFall I wouldn't trust a businessman to understand anything that wasn't a cost cutting measure.
@@FluoFall they ended g4 how stupid can you be?
Knowing that kids spend so much time with touch screens to the point they couldn't operate a controller any more is so sad.
I feel like if they already had the more complex level design, they could've still included it by having a play with parents angle. Otherwise, I feel like maybe they should've gone the full minigame collection route with a more polished focus, similarly to Moshling Zoo and Theme Park.
If they went with the second option, then at least the mini games could have more replay value and could have more value even to older audiences as long as they made the presentation cute enough.
Sounds about right for most tie in games, honestly not surprised it turned out as rough as it was for the gameplay, but its a pleasant note to hear there was an actual fan who did the rigging and cutscenes at least.
this is a true underrated mlp channel seriously the vids are so well made!
If you thought Adventure Maretime Bay was the way it was due time constraints and development issues, then take a look at the Sega Master System game ALF. It has been heavily criticised as one of the worst SMS games in existence, but what many people don't know is that so much went into the game at low budget and rushed shipping time due to the programmers of Nexa Corporation's poor quality coding, which complicated the project. It would be nice to see after market changes to Adventure in Maretime that would enlighten us, especially better textures and colour choices on the Mane Five.
when I saw the trailer for the sequel game, I didn't even know it was being done by different people till having seen this video.
I found your comment about there being a market for MLP games (anything, in this case) for fans over the age of four quite interesting.
Clearly the source material is very family-friendly, but time after time, I see communities centered on MLP that remain very family/kid-friendly. It got me thinking, the show is like, ten years old. That means that a fan who joined when they were 14 is like, 24 now, and I imagine the constant family-friendly communities may not really be what they’re looking for. A fandom should grow with the fans, and sure, there will always be the young fans, and accommodating them isn’t wrong, but I think the mindset of ‘The older fans don’t matter because they aren’t the intended audience.’ is pretty foolish. (If for no other reason than the older fans have actual disposable income to line the pockets of corporate execs that young fans don’t and we all know corporations want money lelelelel)
As one of those 24 year old bronies, i just ask for a story with some depth. Mlp isnt competing with cocomelon, god forbid anyone on the higher ups of this brand should think that my little pony has to compete with cocomelon.
would love to go into indie game development someday so knowing you can put out a game with such a small team
even if it isnt the worlds best game
its actually super encouraging! (also BILLIE BUST UP MENTION THATS SO COOL)
Honestly I just hope the next game is longer :(
Love your stuff. Love your style. Keep it rockin'! :D 💜
maybe not a good game, but god damn 17 devs working on a huge franchise with only 11 months to do so and having to likely change a lot in short amounts of time for children to be able to play the game easier is insane, incredible there is as much of a game as there is at release
DJTHED wanted the ponies to look good because he's a FAN of PONIES. An adult fan. Hasbro, why don't you seem to know we exist anymore? Was ALL the fandom interaction from the FiM team? You'd think at least a few execs would realize the goldmine of the massive adult audience for pony content that they have squandered so much. "Them's Fightin' Herds" could have been waaaaay better and more feature-rich, focused and polished, if Hasbro had picked it up and supported it, instead of trying to shut it down. They had to make a brand new IP and make a ton of new assets. It was called "Fighting is Magic" once upon a time, and I still remember those days. The more symmetrical hitboxes were better for balance, and that first beta I played was leagues better than the new version. I bought it for support and interest, but it doesn't hold a candle to what it used to be. Games with that level of love are all sitting in limbo, waiting to be made if Hasbro would just WAKE UP and hire their adult fans to make pony stuff for the teen and up demographics.

"Hello, children who are barely out of nappies. Please playtest this game for a console aimed primarily at kids over 7. Kthnxbi"
Could you Imagine if My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic was a Mid-90s cartoon and there was a series High Quality Action-Platformer Games made by talented game studio to Rival Mario, Banjo Kazooie, and Kirby For the PS1/N64 Era and then in the future there would other Video Games and Cartoons that would Rival MLP's success in the PS2 Era onwards and they would've made very successful Franchises.
Lion King got an excellent platformer for the SNES. Probably the best licensed game of the era.
About 10 years ago, DuckTales got a modern retro-themed platformer. Definitely worth checking out.
Oh absolutely. If you've played Them's Fightin' Herds, which was a fangame that Hasbro shut down you can tell that if it had been released around year 2000, it would have been a cult classic still played today.
there are some things i would like to implement into a game like this, and that would be to make it a choice matters type of game. like the tell tale games did for some of the IPs they made games for.
I love your channel and i'm looking forward to more videos from you~!
I hope you're having a great day c:
As a backer of Billie Bust Up this was an unexpected way to learn about someone on the dev team.
Nice video! I always wanted to know more of DJTHED involvement in the game.
i love watching your videos!
i have a maratime bay adventure on playstation 4 and enjoy playing it a lot.
LEZGOO NEW VIDEO,,

Interesting vid. Just came across your channel
What do you have planned for the channel?

these look a bit familiar...
I played the game and almost 100% it in under 4 hours, it's not a bad game to be honest.
Yeah, really short, simple and boring at times, but considering they had only 11 months and a team with only 17 people, they did a lot, the animations are pretty good (actually better than the MYM show at times), and some minigames are quite fun, i had my fun with the game, if they had more time, and less limitations (let be honest, who is gonna let a 4 years old todler to play alone in the computer/console) the game could actually been pretty good.
I hope that the next one is less limited in that regard, i will probably play it when it comes out.
I love the little silly pinky pie character you have! what did you use to make it?
Outright Games wanted this to be outright simple (HA)
Personally I think if not a Banjo Kazooi style platformer, then something in the style of Paper Mario Thousand Year Door or LEGO Batman would be a perfect fit for the MLP license. Either gen 4 or 5.
I thought it was very fun but cruelly too short. The animation was pretty good which is all to DJ
Ngl first time i saw this game i thought it looked one to one with the show. To me at the time it blew my mind a lil.
The animations are super pretty and i hope we get more mature games some time
Still crazy G4 didnt have a console release
you have such a good energy
Can't wait till the next upload (─‿‿─)
That is why youtube reviewers are not above profesionals as the claim to be using "periodist stuck in tutorial" as evidence.
Profesional people are careful to inform themselves, be respectful and take the effort to know the product and how the industry works before publishing something.
11 months for fulll game?! As FQA (fancy name for game tester) even testing of almost ready games takes longer! I know it's a simple game but that still is hella short amount of time!
I am so glad you learned about game development! I've seen a lot of reviewers just never try to research anything happening on the back end of a game. This was great follow up
Hasbro: "STOP MAKING FAN GAMES OF MY LITTLE PONY!!!!"
Also Hasbro: "Too bad there isn't a demand for MLP games for people older than 4 years old."
Imagine having a position as a top paid video game programmer working on high profile projects and then you quit... for this studio's trash
"The game was made for pre-schoolers" You don't say???
This gave the feeling that 4 years old shouldn't be introduced to video game 😢 therefore anything targeting them is shovelware 😐
I swear they need to replace dj's renders with the ones in the show.
Real tine graphics and 3d animation pipelines are not the same. If anything those models are amazing for a video game.
I platinum it. I enjoyed it for what it is.
I never played the game, but I kind of had a positive opinion on it just from watching DJTHED passionately talking about his work. But games aren't my thing anyway, I literally don't even have any device that could run this one.
Pushing for the game to be dumbed down after playtesting a graybox level is crazy to me. Set dressing and lighting play a huge part in guiding the player, even when dealing with 4 year olds that have never used controllers before. 17 people working full time should be able to come up with something more entertaining than this, but knowing Hasbro and having dealt with publishers before I'm assuming they did not exactly have full creative control...
Too bad honestly. I refuse to watch the goyslop that is G5, but DJTHEDs work in this game looked really good, and the final product does not do his work justice.
The levels at the time were not fully completed. They weren't all completely one solid color unlit levels. They were just levels that didn't have the final art beauty pass, so to speak.
Also during the time of development of this game, there were like, 9-10 people on average working on the game, only slightly going up from there near the end, just for the record.
@@DJTHED That seems more reasonable. Sucks that you guys didn't have more resources or time to iterate, your animation work deserves better gameplay to back it up. Not trying to shit on your game too much or anything, but there was so much more potential there imo.
Maybe when the >target audience is a little older the venture capitalists will try to capitalise on nostalgia and give us the game that we ponychads truly deserve.
@@hermanssecretponyaccount Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the game is great. We all know what type of game it was a the end of the day. Wish it could've been better, but it is what it is when it comes to licensed game development for children.
Their target audience was.. kids who’d NEVER picked up a controller? So you’re saying they betted on the niche market of young kids who have never used the console they’re putting the game on AND ones that just happen to like mlp too? Be fr, they were setting themselves up for a loss ☠️ which is a shame bcs this game COULDVE been good. Mad respect to the animator tho, their work is stunning and Im def gonna keep an eye on their work
?what?wtf?why?this is so confused?, i truly unable to understand them
i still think you're being too harsh on the game. it's fine for games to be aimed for a very young audience and not an older audience, especially with ips like MLP. little kids need introductory games that are simple and easy to control.
Even with the game's demographic, it doesn't excuse the poor story.
If they playtesters can't even hold a controller, they probably don't own one.
If they don't own the console, they most likely won't buy the game.
Isn't it logical?
