You are more patient with gerber than I am. They just keep dropping the ball
It is sad 😢
Agree with you completely
Gerber: it has Rockwell hardness.
Brawndo! It has electrolytes!!! It’s what plants crave🙌🏼👍🏼
All steel has a Rockwell harness, it’s a unit of measure. Looks like the Gerber here is probably 48-50. That’s poor. Consumer knives are usually between 52-62 hardness.
the rockness of this knife is wellhard
This had me in tears
@@aldeluca5079went right over your head huh? If you stood up it would of hit ya
Gerber Principle had slight deformation Sith oak, Mora, Marttiini, had no problems. Mora 2000 would be a good camp knife. I have several Kansbols and 2000s.
I didn't even make it half way through the video. Stopped at 440A. That's like old silverware.
I am 100% sure that knife was for sale on aliexpress in 2015
Maybe slapping their logo on random stuff by price point,
Gerber just needs to go all-in with a Strongarm 2.0, sticking with what works
I'm not disappointed by this at all. I fully expect Gerber to make overpriced, poor quality knives using budget materials. So Gerber - job well done! Sharp blades all.
_Good Entertainment!_
Love the fixed blade content man! Hope all is well and take care!!
Thanks! You too!
Thank you, Aaron, for the great information. I was actually looking at that particular knife. But thanks to you and your dedication to us, your viewers. I was able to steer away from it. Please keep up the fantastic work.
I can remember when Gerber had a good reputation. Back then, they were highly regarded...as companies like Tops or Spyderco is today. It was never a custom brand name, but it had a solid reputation for making good knives. Somewhere along the way, Gerber jumped on the same row boat that took Schrade down river.
Very well done review. Appreciate the honesty, positives and negatives
Website says lifetime guarantee. Get it fixed and do an update video.
I would be interested to know if these brands reach out to you after such a poor review and if so, how do they react?
Neutral handle with a forward finger choil for choking up is my favorite handle configuration on both fixed blades and folders. Hot spots are a lot less common if a knife is configured this way. PM2 and Stretch 2 is one of the best examples of this.
I really wanted to like this because it looks like it belongs in Family of The Terracraft and The Principle so said its the step child.
That surprises me considering this is the same company that made the Strongarm which I love.
I just took mine out to Yosemite for a camping trip. I have small hands so it felt good. The blade did dull out by day 3 cutting thick boxes and some branches, the point did hold up great, for the sheath I modified so it has less retention and it was perfect easy draw
Picked up a twenty dollar SOG field knife out of tractor supply that seems better than that Gerber. I kinda like it for a camp knife.
This is why I will never buy a another Gerber knife not knowing what I'll end up with. I have an old Gerber made with ATS 34 steel. It's a great knife.
Oh nice!!
ATS34 is just a analog to 154CM… both great steel.
Cedric and Ada recently had a very similar edge problem with the Principle in 420HC
Good choice 👌 to review. Thanks buddy
Looks good and nice price. Strange steel choice. List here more ideal steels they could have used instead.
That's pretty much all Gerber uses, they've been riding on cutting edge 1980s steel technology for way too long
I can Rockwell test that knife for you. I work in a metrology lab.
Recently bought a BUSSE Dog Soldier 6 and ready to live the rest of my life with it
Never been a Gerber fan don’t own any and that’s saying something for me and an American knife brand. That handle might be good for someone without large size hands😊. FYI Don’t say delicious when talking about looks 👌🏼.
I saw this one in a store locally and liked the look of it. I checked the steel and price and decided against it. I'm glad I did. That's asking too much for such a low grade steel.
Come on Gerber is like reverse Benchmade at this point. Super low prices 0 capabilities. Benchmade is 2 inch blade $300.
Great content as always!
Appreciate it!
Thanks for the review. Hope Gerber finds there way home.
Gerber in the 70’s was great. USA made, I’m still using a chef knife purchased back then. A sheath knife with cocobolo wood was my camp knife and was great for that time with 420 Steel of some kind. Since then, Gerber has been all about mass marketing and despite a couple of great designs, the LHR combat knife with design input by Bill Harsey and Chris Reeve, never fully improved their steel choices. Even the LMF is 420HC. Now owned by Fiskers, its just another big international company more concerned with production quantity, not quality.
There you go again protecting us again your content is excellent Keep it up . Bravo sir .
Thanks so much!!
Most of my day use/edc knives are Gerbers and I take a Principle and a Strongarm on backpacking trips and like all of them. I just got the Scout folder because I wanted a folder that’s a little beefier than the Fastball and Griptillian. The Scout is a folder Mora kniv to me and incredibly ergonomic. Sad to see the new fixed blade is bad, granted it’s $50.
Great video brother
Shame they didn’t make a larger principle. I do wonder if the edge grind angle was 17degrees or less. It would be interesting to re-profile and then see how it holds up. I really liked their downwind for the $ and on sale this could be in the same price range
The problem might be just garbage steel and or poor heat treatment. There are to many quality knives with a decent price to waste time buying this.
That company is like Jekyll and Hyde. For every good thing they pump out of Portland, some goober at HQ signs off on 10 total garbage knives totally at odds with the brand.
I couldn't agree more. I have a place in my heart for them as the Gator was my first folder and it is a good knife, I also have the pack axe..... yeah the pack axe 😒
I couldn’t agree more, I saw your Principal video. Good stuff. Mine seems to hold a better edge than yours. Closer to moras “recycled” steel. But that shows their QC maybe off. Keep up the good work, I always check to see what your experience with a steel is! You have some of the most consistent edge performance standards around!
I have similar size hands as you, so this would be a no-go for me. Thanks for the video Aaron. Well done, as usual.
Thanks for watching Kenneth
Great!!! Thanks for the info my man. Are going to review the Esee 4 or 3 in s35vn sometime? I would like to know your opinion on them.
Thanks again.
I don’t understand why gerber can’t stay consistent, especially for how long they have been in the game.
The Gerber EAB Utility is the best box cutter I've ever owned and will likely be the last Gerber I buy since Fiskars took over the brand. It feels like they're being heat treated in an Easy Bake Oven...
Idk about you but mine was perfectly fine. Ive used it as a screwdriver, prybar, normal knife, and its fine. Sure i have to strop it every day but i do that with every knife regardless
Great video! Would love to see an updated EDC video. Also, does your wife have an EDC? Do your kids carry their own bags hiking or do you mostly carry stuff that they use too?
Yes they do, good idea
Thanks for being honest
Always! You all are the reason!!
Thanks Aaron, I will avoid that crap. I was searching for something bigger than my EDC Izula, and I think I will order an ESEE 4.
I wish that Gerber had a premium line of knives, I mean like bark river, fallkniven and lionsteel level.
I bought one last weekend before a camping trip. I wasn’t even looking for a knife, just a sleeping bag at Academy. I always browse the knife section and saw this blade. I had just sold my Ontario Rat that was my EDC. I sold it ONLY because I was needing cash until payday.
Anyways, I bought the Convoy ONLY because it was small and compact, which was perfect for EDC.
Normally, I ALWAYS check steel and compare it to price point. $50 for stainless? At the moment I didn’t care.
It sharpens decently and looks decent. It will do just fine for my cutting chemical containers and boxes
Wasn’t everyone hating on the Ganzo you reviewed a couple months ago? I’d rather have one of those.
You have the only video on this knife.
I've given up on Gerber & think the last good things they put out were the Suspension Multi-Tool & the Gator fixed blade.
Go with BPS knives, I did.
Shame they dident use the 420HC like the strongarm ????and add some thicker reprofiled scales .
Why is there a screw on the front of a tube swedged knife?
My go-to is still the gerber terracraft
Contact Gerber about their bad batch of heat treat. They could re release that knife with a different steel and/or improved handle.
My 2 words: heat treatment!
cool❤❤❤
I really like the design of this knife but I've just got away from buying knives..I have a couple drawers full and you can now buy reliable firearms for the price of quality knives anymore so ive started growing my gun collection..Im a gerber fan as well but the knife companies have been ripping off the community in my opinion but i still enjoy watching your reviews Aaron thanks
That's bad but the Dual-Force is worse. I'm on my second one. Both have failed. The first one broke the first time I used it right in front of the guy who gave it to me. The plier head broke just taking a hose off of a pressure washer. My second one has blade play and is super dull after an hour of box cutting and the wire cutter chipped just cutting wire for my friend's vape. It's sad that Gerber is going back downhill because I love my MP600, Center-Drive, Prodigy, Sedulo, and Strongarm
Me too!
I haven't seen you this irritated in sometime.. I've been a sub of yours for a little over nine years now and it's nice to see that your conviction is still the exact same way now 💯 as it was then
Thanks so much for long standing viewership!! Really appreciate that. And totally 👍
Why modify it? Why carry it unless you need a dedicated butter knife? Gerber knives have always been a bit softer than I prefer.
I have a CRKT Tighe Breaker that magically has finger grooves that fit me,... every other finger groove on a knife has been either annoying or downright in the way like this Gerber.
That thicc bevel is almost big enough to class it as a scandi
Gerber has sullied their name, quality and reputation for so many decades that it's doubtful to me that they'll ever be able to crawl out of the odoriferous outhouse hole they've dug and dwell in. Their brand, quality and blades are now synonymous with chrome plated oatmeal. ... Other iconic American cutlery brands like Case and Buck were several decades behind the industry power curve and seemed destined for oblivion. Unlike Gerber, Case and Buck are attempting to right their listing ship, by offering quality steel, properly heat treated, attractive designs and real value in the rapidly evolving, incredibly competitive market place. ... It's now the Golden Age of cutlery. Rennaissance masterpieces are being created and marketed at a bewildering pace. ... Gerber is still dabbling with finger painting - rearranging the deck chairs on their sinking ship. It's doubtful to me that they'll survive what they've wrought.
Gerber should be listen to the ....
That's been the frustration with Gerber. Anyone who remembers their golden days hopes for a return to form, but they actively seem to be getting worse. CRKT and Kershaw were getting left behind a bit by some of the new brands and they're both seeming to be in the middle of turning that around, so at least some of these classic, easy cost PNW brands are getting their game together again.
Sadly, Gerber has become the Remington of the knife industry.
Good review but you should check what a combo grind actually looks like 👍
Hi do You send question to Gerber in these topic?
Okay...so tell us how you really feel! LOL I'm not interested in wasting my money on this knife. However, I did purchase the Hardside Water Systems and some extra accessories. They are great. I got them for me and my family. They are great to keep in the Jeep. I can use the tube to get a drink without having to fumble for a bottle.
Awesome! And yes I couldn’t agree more!!
Well, it’s a Gerber. No surprise there.
Any one surprised Gerber goofed up on a knife. It always baked in at this point
Yeah, that’s what I think whenever I see anything Gerber, besides the strong arm and a few select others.
In my Army days back in the 80s-90’s Gerber was the go to knife for guys who didn’t want to carry either the KBar or M9 Bayonet for field use . They were great durable knives that you could get a great edge and use for just about anything. Sadly , today the 20-30.00 fixed blades you get from Amazon have better steel , better durability , better sheaths and hold a better edge . Gerber designs and QA today are mediocre at best
Sad how good of a company gerber used to be and now we are left with this mess.
They should send more prototypes to people who use knives .👍 they’d till did the strongarm . So does anyone know for sure of the ones on Amazon are real strongarm s for $50 or fakes ? Someone said the boxes are different . I feel the community needs to once and for all about the Amazon strongarm s. It’s listed under the gerber store , has good reviews and bad reviews saying it’s fake ?
They are fake. Don’t buy from Amazon
I bought a strongarm on Amazon. It came on a skinny box with no cardboard insert. The knife was in the sheath wrapped in bubble wrap. And the instructions were wadded up and shoved into the box. I contacted Gerber, and they said they never wrap any of their knives in bubble wrap and the knife ships in the sheath and that is held in place by a cardboard insert. The Gerber representative said it was definitely a counterfeit strongarm. The thing is it looks exactly like an original. It came almost razor sharp, it looks totally legitimate.I payed almost $60.00 for it. I contacted Amazon they just said return it.
@@hunterglaspell thanks 😊
@@boblewis3444 thanks for responding .
Introducing the new Gerber… now made with Chinesium. 😂
Nothing new you discovered there. 90% of their knives have been made in China for the past 20 years.
2 of my favorite and 2 of my most hated knives are made by Gerber.
they cater for all your emotions😂
More than fair. Shit on one knife, but push for another Gerber. You'd think they'd had someone troubleshooting their prototypes .
Yeah 440 is pretty ds since a lot of these chinese budgets pop out at the same price with d2 or something you can use for more than 5 minutes.
I like gerber multiools, but their import knives are never that good. I do really like my sedulo expect for the edge grind being pretty bad but it doesnt seem to effect performance enough for me to do anything.
Great review. This knife is really attractive to me as well. This sucks to hear. I also just want Gerber to succeed.
In that price range I'd rather go with the cold steel srk or the sog seal pup. Waaay more bang for your buck.
I don't get Gerber's problem.
The Gerber Spine was using 7Cr (very similar to 440A) but edge geometry and heat treatment seemed to be more than decent.
Of course it was budget fixed blade, nothing crazy about it, but it was ok ! Even the sheath was intetresting.
And it was made oversea too...
This model seems to confirm Gerber's wrong direction has taken in many aspects.
You lost me at “$50 Gerber”
Hahhaha
Love the blade but I can tell just by looking at the handle that I hate it. They need to stop trying to use this handle design on everything the do recently. The blade is nice and flowing and deserves a more organic handle, not a geometric mess. 6:54 you can tell the handle is paper thin.
Back to the drawing board Gerber. It's junk yes
Just saw this at REI: was like, wow, Gerber is stepping it up, I could get behind that; but my experience stepped in: I should search reviews on that first... Wow, dodged the bullet on that one. 😂 I've had multiple Gerber products since, but my last favorite Gerber product was the Gerber Firestorm. Sigh
It's almost a good design, they just need to make a v2.0. Add colored spacers underneath the scales, two-tone would give it some pop, and extra thickness. Make that single finger groove smaller. Make a new stealth, where the clip has a hoop on it, so you can flip the stealth around for ambi usage
And also, change the name because this model just crashed and burned. Basically, just make a whole new product. 😂
Yeah, really sad could be a great design with a few modifications.
When you're a knife company, you should be able to make a knife that works. That's just not Gerber.
"This knife represents a case study in how the ball can get dropped between the design phase of an item and the final finished product..."
Bruh it's not just a case study, that's literally Gerber's standard MO these days. 😂
Thanks for the review, I definitely could have been suckered into buying this one based on the attractiveness.
Hahah!!
thanks a great review , but personally, I would like to see Gerber start to use better steels and move more products to the USA , BUT Im done with Gerber , not going to spend any more of my money on them .
I really wish the same.
440 A? Whaaaaaa????
Finger indexing not needed.
Really do feel bad for their design dept 😅
For real!
Gerber used to stand for American made decent priced tools now its almost all crap as far as the knives go WHY lol and they keep doing ittttt
440 steel isn't actually that bad of a steel. It's just rarely utilized to its potential. Apparently even Gerber hasn't figured out how to do that yet...
440A steel isn't bad for a $25 knife. For a tiny $40 knife, it's bad, really bad.
Gerber - We Make Space Age Knives from Bronze Age Materials. You're welcome.
it would seem they don't even test their knives, and/or their Q/A dept is non-existent
If using stainless steel wasn't bad enough, the geometry and profile of the handle looks seriously uncomfortable. Fewer and fewer production knife makers are making a few prototypes to be tested in the field before continuing with mass production.
Ya it is kind of silly.
I bought a 15$ wartech eBay knife similar to that one for my kid to play with but he wanted something better so we upgraded him lol this one seems overpriced but 30$
The baby food brand name is bad enough as it is.
Thats a shame.....Blade shape/ size perfect. Nice full tang..... Hope they redesign or eliminate handle finger grooves. Upgrade to 420 would be fine. 440c probably a little more money....Thanks for the review.....As is...a big NO!
So you're kinda sorta not entirely happy with the pile that Gerber is trying to pass off as an actual knife. I'm glad you're reviewing it because by looks alone, I'd buy it. Not now. That's like some of those Chinese clones I saw DBK testing.
Ya very sad!
You'd buy a Gerber? 🤦
