  • Dinah Shore and Ethel Merman sing each other's hits in this special TV duet from 1958. They both sing "Hostess With the Mostes' on the Ball," which Dinah recorded on the original cast album, because of a contract conflict. Ethel did her own album for Decca.

    When television shows were truly entertaining. Black and white, small screens, little definition on the CRT, but did it matter. Not when you had an antenna on the roof, no monthly service charges, no remote and maybe six channels to choose from with the turn of a knob. I was a kid then, but I remember it well.

    Aw, this is great to see - I always felt that Dinah's musical talents really never got the recognition which she was due. Ethel Merman (who never appeared in a Broadway flop) was about to set sail for her biggest Broadway success ever - with "Gypsy." As another poster mentioned, these two ladies were riding the crest of a wave. Cheers to all - and thanks to Alan for bringing us these!

    Why oh why do we not have the pleasure of witnessing such musical magnificence as this today? Sure, I get that music & musical tastes changes over the course of time, but live entertainment of this calibre is timeless & will always be appreciated!

      Because today's young people 35 and under have no clue to what great entertainment is all about and never will! It's horrible that most think this way now and what's more, it's unforgivable too !!!!!

    I think lovely Dinah was responsible for Ethel appearing so natural, appealing. Many times on TV the great Merman just plowed thru her hits like a truck driver. Here they are both classy entertainers with a lot heart and--spunk!

    What a treat! And due to Ethel's strict Decca contract Dinah wound up singing Ethel's role on the original cast album of Call Me Madam while Ethel did her own version on Decca. Wow! Both "Sally Adams" in this amazing duet. Thank you for another rarity!

    Best part about all of Dinah's duets on her show was that she was so clearly having a terrific time. Check out the Ella Fitzgerald or Peggy Lee clips, too. Not to mention her duet with, of all people, Mahalia Jackson. It's one of those things that should work but works beautifully - as does this.

    I love how Ethel used the like "some like that perfume from spain" rather than "I get no kick from cocaine" To avoid the mention of drug use. I wonder if that's an actual line of the song or an improvisation...Wonderful performance from both singers, thanks for sharing Alan, and thanks for your constant posts in the Patti Page Facebook group...God bless.

    • @jmdocs
      @jmdocs Před rokem +1

      That was the "standard" line for recordings and radio broadcasts for years, not an improv. I'm sure Cole Porter hated it, because he, of all people, would have known that there really wasn't any such thing as good "perfume from Spain" - but that's a tough rhyme scheme to rewrite - not only rhyming "plane" but also "sniff"...yikes! But thus it went for many recordings over the years...

    • @patrickhamilton6207
      @patrickhamilton6207 Před rokem

      Yes. Sinatra and many others HAD to use the alternate line. I'm guessing Porter supplied that other line, of course at the insistence of censors etc... The original "cocaine" lyric (1934) started appearing again in the 70s. Merman recorded a great version in 1972 with the original cocaine line. Merman HAD to sing the alternate line at the opening of the 1936 ANYTHING GOES movie with Crosby. Sadly, Sinatra made up his own lyrics to this fantastic find and subsequently used by other singers probably assuming it was written as such. Example, "you give me a boot" Frank injected into his version. He also made up, "mere alcohol doesn't MOVE me at all...". The word should be thrill. Lyricists toil over choosing just the proper word. I don't like it when singers take those liberties. Merman ALWAYS sang a song as written exactly by the composer.

    • @jmdocs
      @jmdocs Před rokem +1

      @@patrickhamilton6207 Her original 1934 recording (on CZcams, no surprise, and you've probably already heard it anyway) also used the "cocaine" line. Listening to it again, it has that great subtle alliteration on "kick from cocaine" - those three "k" sounds in one bar - which of course Porter knew Merman would hit really hard - another sign of his genius.

    • @patrickhamilton6207
      @patrickhamilton6207 Před rokem

      @@jmdocs I do beg your pardon. You said the 1934 recording. Yes indeed. The cocaine line was used. Cocaine was rather popular and chic for the cafe society set that Porter traveled in.

    • @jmdocs
      @jmdocs Před rokem +1

      @@patrickhamilton6207 Precisely! Broadway could handle cocaine; Hollywood, definitely not, post-Code enforcement. I'm sure you know Tallulah Bankhead's line: "When I came to New York, my father warned to stay away from liquor and men. He never said anything about cocaine and women."

    Despite all the joking, Merman could sing softly and tenderly: think of "Small World" in Gypsy. Not to mention her gentle rendition of "There's No Business Like Show Business" when she's trying to cheer up Fozzie on The Muppet Show...

    I'm guessing GM has the full set of Dinah Shore kinescopes and videotapes, the last several years of which would be in color. Why they're sitting on a shelf somewhere I don't know. I know there are issues with performance rights clearances from various estates, and if that is the issue, it's an argument for streamlining existing copyright law.

    • @jmdocs
      @jmdocs Před rokem

      The show wasn't owned by GM, it was owned by Dinah's production company - thus by her. She did in fact maintain the color videotapes starting in 1958. Apparently NBC contacted her and said that all of these huge, bulky, expensive 2" videotapes are sitting in our vaults and we have no rights to the shows. So either you pay us for the videotape stock or we are going to erase them and re-use them. Dinah paid for the stock. Look around CZcams for some great color clips. As for release - they ran for a while on JLTV (Jewish Life TV - Dinah was Jewish) - but the copyright issues for all of those songs in particular make it really hard to clear for further release.

    • @dmiller1000
      @dmiller1000 Před rokem

      @@jmdocs I've seen some of the clips - I want to see more. I guess some future generations will get to see this stuff once the rights expire, after 95 years or some such period of time. The other route would be the nonprofit route - donating them to Library of Congress or something like that.

    • @jmdocs
      @jmdocs Před rokem

      @@dmiller1000 Yeah, current copyright law is - let's just say ridiculous and leave it at that (the original term of copyright in America was 14 years with an option to renew once...) As for the non-profit route, there are actually many of them in the UCLA Film and Television archive (the estate may have donated everything; I don't know) - but that doesn't end the copyright issues. Even if the materials were donated *with* the copyright (as was done by Universal Newsreels when their library went to the National Archives) there are still the tangled music-rights issues for these. That's one reason "The Carol Burnett Show" (1 hour) was syndicated as "Carol Burnett and Friends" (½) hour - they cut all the musical numbers due to music clearance costs.

      @@jmdocs Ridiculous is a good word. An attempt at fair compensation for artists' work(and protection of valuable rights) which has resulted in the work only being seen by 'scholars' and 'archivists' and descendents of the creative artists earning nothing.
