Final boss was pathetic and i love how the ending blatantly sets up a sequel despite the fact that it's a remake of a game of a series with tonnes of sequals which started to get mediocre after Overdose.
I see some major plotholes in this mediocre story. First the obvious. Eve. This story confirmes that BOOH is canon. But there is no mention of Alastor or how Eve is freed from his powers. It says that Eve wanted to take over Lucifer's position after Daniel killed him, but they talk like Alastor never happened. Next is Samael. We assume that Overdose is canon, but even then Samael never betrayed Daniel. He betrayed Belial. After Daniel presumably killed Alastor, completing his part of the deal, Samael was acually fully willing to reunite him with his wife and even said that she is waiting for him. It was Daniel who refused to go to heaven. But in HD Daniel says he was betrayed by angels and demons. The only angel he ever saw was Samael and he never betrayed him. And he was never betrayed by a demon, unless he means Asmodeus, who was actually Lucifer in disguise. The ONLY one to ever betray him was Eve. And now both of them act like that wasn't that big of a deal? Even back then Eve offered him the chance to reunite with Catherine, but Daniel again refuses in favour of taking down Eve. And now he sacrifices his reunion with Catherine to save Eve AGAIN. Of course the Grimm Reaper can't be trusted, but still. Also, I HATE Eve's new design. And the voice acting. OMG. Even Resurrection had better voice acting. Aside from that, the gameplay is alright, but fighting the same bosses again (especially Alastor) makes no sense. It's nice to see an actual cinematic story telling after Resurrection, Redemption and Recurring Evil, but I expected more.
He said "Angels and demons tricked me". So yeah, Lucifer tricked him... Anyway, I don't think they really cared about the story. In the first Painkiller, even though the story was not that important, at least we could see that the developpers had still put effort into it. But here? No, I don't think they really cared.

Got halfway in this version. So in the orphanage sequal level, the game would just bug out on the butcher. He wouldn't die! So I ended up just having to quit. Even restarting the level did nothing. So i'll stick with my original painkiller and expansion cds!
Ok i watched this and i've found only one thing that's better than the original - main menu background. Feel sad for the developers. Guys, i know you can do it better.
