As an artist, I am a total digital convert. Love drawing & painting on my iPad Pro. Not only for the cost, but no more expensive paints or brushes! Plus the ipad is so convenient. So easy to edit & change things. I love it. I will definitely be buying the ipad mini 6 for when i want to travel light. Perhaps there will be some days I will do some traditional drawing & painting. But for now I am all digital.
I have to say not having to clean up after painting is great about digital....the beating your eyes take is not so fun....for me anyway, the strain on my eyes is felt.
Two weeks of using Ipad mini and i can say i'm enjoying my time creating art with this wherever i go. Its really a helpful gadget for an artist like me, who loves to go outside most of the time to draw places and people. I love the size of it so perfect for my small bag
Very talented. Digital is cool but at the end of the day all you have is a digital file and only satisfies one of the senses. Real painting not only visual but has real feel, sound, feel, and smell.
I’m the same way with notebooks for journaling. I think digital would be great but I just never can make that switch. But that iPad mini is fantastic looking and your work is great.
I’ve always been a big proponent of digital art. The options are endless and you can use all sorts of tools that you wouldn’t necessarily already have access to. Traditional art will always have its place, but I believe art and artists with it need to change with the times.
I ordered an iPad mini 4. Along with a drawing stylus. I orded it because I was really starting to get into digital art, and I wanted an iPad, but all of the ones that I wanted like the 12 inch one. Didn't fit my budget. So I got this one. I was worried it was too small to even draw on, but then I watch this video and you can still get a great amount of details.
That is great! Glad you are getting into digital art! Keep it up. Yes the mini is a suitable tablet. A big screen is not always needed. Glad this video was helpful!! 👍😁
Both. Every time. Both are fun both improve your skills, each of them has a benefits and downsides def do both. These days I do more digital because I strive to do it professionally and it makes more sense for me to work that way, expecially since I switched from painting to scupting, but I am using a small table easel for my Wacom Cintiq Companion 16. That tablet doesn't have good options for stands, and the tiny easel is perfect for it. It's my little nod to my traditional background besides the fact that when i paint digitally I try to make it look as much like oils as I can.
It’s great to see you again Brandon! I think that I would also prefer the traditional pad to sketch on. I prefer the tactile feedback of pencil or pen on paper. Granted that I have never used a digital version, but I have tried a few sketch apps on my iPhone. I just am not adept at it and will always resort back to paper and pocket templates.
Thanks! . . . If you get the chance to use the Apple Pencil it is surprisingly very nice. Plus they have some new screen protectors that "Feel" like paper. And there is even some company making a "tip cover" that makes the Apple Pencil feel more "tactile."
That's what's been bothering me, I've tried huion tablets and I don't like the feel of it, much prefer the feel of pencil on paper. I'm wondering what the iPad feels like.
Nice video and awesome artwork as usual! I would say that traditional is more challenging than digital because it’s easier to undo mistakes digitally. Plus you have unlimited tools, you can zoom in, etc. Traditional is more difficult especially if you work in media like pen and ink or watercolor.
This is exactly the video I was looking for. I need to save space and weight on my motorbike camping trips. I think it's worth mentioning that you can create large scale paintings on the ipad mini without carrying a large sketchbook I think traditional is better in many ways but not as practical
Awesome! I am glad this video is helpful!!! It is indeed a great tool and very portable. And just like you said, practical and capable of large scale work. 👍 Thanks for watching and commenting!
It’s traditional its tangible it exists in the real world and thats what i like to do is be a real artist that works on palpable surfaces ,these words were enough to convince in believing that digital is optional
Thank you for watching! I am glad this statement was helpful. Never feel compelled or forced to create art a certain way, Do what you like, do it for you. 👍
Las dos maneras de dibujar son hermosas, creo que para empezar esta bien tradicionalmente, después si quieres vender tu trabajo digital es mejor en el iPad, los dos me gustan y usaría los dos.
I use both traditional and digital. However, having cerebral palsy and chronic pain, I do more digital now. The iPad mini is lighter for me to carry, unless just using a pen and sketchbook. I have a pro that I use for larger projects and can send files between the two. I definitely use it as a mobile sketchbook and portfolio. Especially, since I can’t drive due to cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Even my watercolor supplies have become bulky since using a walker, so the iPad mini works better for every day carry. I also still use traditional techniques, the work is still being drawn by hand, just on a glass surface. Most of my work is done using one layer and I rarely use the undo button. Less pressure on the iPad is better on my wrists with carpal tunnel and doesn’t aggravate my rotator cuff and spine like large work does. I think they both have their place. I’ve exhibited and sold prints of my digital art. I sell and exhibit traditional art. I don’t think it’s an either/or. Even painting on glass isn’t new. I’ve always seen things with intense light and color being autistic and take advantage of that with digital work. My favorite traditional media is pen and ink, but I also work in watermedia and oil. When I want more physical feedback and my body cooperates, I do traditional. But for me, as a disabled artist, digital is an assistive device that keeps me able to make art and what really matters is that we create, regardless of the medium. And I’m excited to be able to benefit from the technology in this way.
Id live to know has anyone transitioned from only ever using the 12.9 to the mini and prefered it? (From an "professional" artist perspective) im considering going smaller! I love smaller form factors, just minimizes bag sizes and space! and not to mention theres nicer options for cases and accesories! ☺
I think it all depends on what you are creating, and what your expectations are. Both devices are capable of producing the same end result. It is just a matter of how much work space you want, and what resolution/screen quality you prefer.
I love my Moleskines and find they have many advantages over the iPad, like they don't break when they fall, they're harder to get stollen, they don't require battery and they can be returned without Find My - just write your phone number on it and the person who finds it will probably call you - it happened to me once! BUT... Maybe by the end of the year i pick an iPad Mini. Why? Because it's the same size of my Moleskines, it's MUCH easier to pass drwings to the computer and I really enjoyed using the late Paper on my iPad Air. The problem with the iPad Air was its size, too big to carry around. The Mini is a lot easier and don't attract that much attention. I'm not a pro, I'm an art director who uses Macs at work and home. I find the Mini will be useful to mix my drawings and ides, being easy to share between devices. Screen size is not a problem as the Mini's screen is almost the same size of my Moleskines. What I draw is more to a cartoon style then more elaborated drawings/art. Sometimes I play with watercolors on my "slices of life". But to carry everything around things begin to get bulkier so I pack ony the Moleskine and a pen (0.5 or 0.3) and go light, adding color later if I want. I won't abandon this, i like the "one shot" need of the pen and the way it teaches us to deal with "mistakes". You lean a lot from it! The iPad Mini and ProCreate will open many other possibilities I find very interesting. Sometimes too much is not good but we have to learn to deal with this also. In the end, these are too medias which has its pros, cons and conveniences. Like film and digital, which I enjoy both also. That's the point: enjoy what you have at hand, what counts is the result! Thanks for the video, it was HARD to find something like this, not focused on hardware only! My best!
I am not able to feel to control and uncertainty of the brush strokes of real at all in digital, but digital has its own fun, mostly undo and adjusting capabilities
I like it compact but that's a really hard decision not because of the comparisson to traditional media Apple's products are well rounded and have a great depth to them but the real dilemma is the price being not that different to the Ipad pro or air
I am torn bet. This and the Pro models :3 aside from drawing i like also gaming on the iPad maybe this is the perfect gadget for me

I am thinking about buying this one. I do think it’s alittle small. Like I’ve been drawing in my phone lately, but you know what I think I want to try this one
You should definitely give it a try before you buy, especially if you have the opportunity. It is much nicer to draw on than a phone, but does feel a little small compared to the larger iPads. Good Luck. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Yes. If the end goal is to convert the traditional sketch into a digital sketch. For sure, you could do that. However in this video I was attempting to demonstrate the use of the iPad as sketchbook. Not a means of conversion. Thanks for watching and commenting! 👍
Thanks. I don’t watch drawing tutorials and I don’t know if there are any in my style. But I am working on creating some more for my channel. Maybe they will help. What particular aspect of drawing are you looking for?
Thank you!! I really appreciate the feedback. I’m not sure which part you are talking about. Many times I draw the same thing more than once to get certain shots. Or it could be that layer was imported as hidden / private. 🕵️♂️👀
I have not. They sent me one to try but have not had the chance to try it. Maybe I will soon and let you know what I think. I am pretty comfortable using the standard screen and Apple Pencil. Not sure if I would like the “drag.” I’ve seen “Pen Tips” that simulate the sensation of paper. Need to try those too. thanks for watching and commenting!
Yes. For sure. I think it is pretty great, especially for it’s portability. I would definitely recommend if you have the opportunity, go look at them, experience it first hand and compare for yourself. 👍😁
Yes I would say that with the right software it is good for both of those types of art creation. There are plenty of videos that demonstrate this with different version of the iPad. And the iPad mini is an iPad. It is no different than the regular one, the air or the pro. Except for it's size. Some will debate the screen quality and processor, but when it comes to being able to draw or create visual "Art" it works great. 👍

Not to mention that you can always make the Digital traditional by Printing it.
