From actual research instead of childhood rumors. "The band ZZ Top's name came from an idea by guitarist and lead singer Billy Gibbons. Gibbons noticed that many performers' names used initials while living in a small apartment with concert posters. He was particularly inspired by blues legends B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill, and considered combining their initials into "ZZ King". However, he thought that was too similar to the original name, and eventually came up with "ZZ Top" as a way to signify "reaching the pinnacle" of their journey. "
It is a testament to talent on how these guys transitioned from the "classic" ZZ sound of the 60's/70's and adapted to the 80's. And those ladies from the 80s... WOOFTAH!!! I miss the 80s! LOL
No band has ever been nor will ever be cooler than zz top. The beards, the voices, the cars, the cool ass lyrics, the way they dress. Everything. legends
A little trivia for those who do not know it, ZZ Top did the same spinning of the guitar and bass in the movie Back to the Future Part III ... using acoustics since the movie was set before electricity.
When they were filming the Festival, a piece of equipment broke. While they were waiting someone asked ZZ Top to sing a song, After AN HOUR of performing, the singer asked if the equipment got fixed, the Director said yes.....
Yea, I gave up and just see maybe 6 bands that share and own that TOP overall. But if you want to narrow it to "80's" then ZZ Top might stand alone, esp on the Mtv circuit.

@markdrechsler5660 yeah, he hasn't done "Tube Snake Boogie" & "Pearl Necklace " either. Wait until he does those & figures out what they're about. "Tush" too
These guys were absolutely not afraid to change their sound. They were always unmistakably ZZ Top. And would have a song or two, at least, that goes back to their roots. Like "My Head's In Mississippi" from 1990.
I’ve gone to 4 ZZ Top concerts and they were all amazing and so fun. My brother went to school with Frank Beard (for context my brother is 75 and I’m 59). In the 80s in my late teens early 20s they were BOMB!
If you want to see how much talent this band has watch them play "Le Grange" live on the Howard stern show. It will blow your mind. Whether you show it on your show or just watch it for yourself. Trust me it's amazing.
Unrelated fun fact... The actor who played the kid that tried to steal the guitar from Ray Charles in The Blues Brothers, was the limo driver Argyle in in the movie Die Hard.
We all loved ZZ top. Girls boys. We were and still are a generation of " togetherness." What a time to live never meant to be forgotten. Never. Rock on Gen X.
Its crazy to think that Billy Gibbons was an opening act for Jimi Hendrix back in the day & here we are decades later & BG is still rockin' . His longevity is to be respected & admired . As far as i remember JH loved his guitar playing a lot .
I was in the Navy when this came out. Partying in a field, listening to home made mix tapes, and singing at the top of our drunk little sailor lungs ... good times.

The car is called the "Eliminator" car and was featured in several music videos. It has a corvette engine in it. Its been on magazine covers as well. It was used for the album cover to their album called Eliminator. That car is like a 4th member of the group. Lol I believe Billy Gibson of ZZ Top is/was a car collector.
ZZ has always been in my top 3 favorite groups. I've seen lots of their concerts with the first one being in the mid 70s. Their music never gets old. There isn't one single song they've ever done that I don't like. That's saying alot! Thanks for you reaction!
The first time I saw them on TV, I couldn't figure out why they weren't showing the rest of the band. I didn't realize 3 people could make that much Music.
I was the same way when I first saw them on TV. Kept trying to find the rest of their band and the day that I finally realized that the three of them was the whole d*mn band, it totally blew me away!
They became pop stars in the 80s, but the quality of their music (like this) took a huge hit. Check out their 70s stuff, albums like "Tres Hombres" or "Fandango." That was peak ZZ Top.
Did you know zz top makes an appearance in back to the future 3? They're the band playing at the town celebration. When they spin the guitars watch Marty's face!! Also - the one with the name beard - doesn't have one - the drummer. Last time i was in the rock and roll hall of fame - they had the car there.
You gotta keep in mind, This was at a time when Mtv just launched, so artists felt like they needed to have the best video out there for the music. Same as content creators feeling like they're next video has to raise the bar! No different. Platforms changed but goals stayed the same.
This is when MTV actually played music videos. Stuff through the 80’s was stellar. I watched the very first episode of MTV sitting on the couch with my best friend. The rocket blasted off every hour, and that’s pretty much how we told time. Everything was new and amazing. Yes, I’m old, but I’m glad my music era was 80’s & early 90’s.
Man I’ll never stop loving hearing those dudes play. I grew up playing around in a shop where they built and painted show cars and they constantly blasted ZZ Top. 🤟
ZZ top came into the industry like. So we're gonna look like Wizards with guitar's, but we're gonna sing like Angels! 😂 Let them wrap their brains around this!
Zz Top formed in 1969 in Texas as a blues/ rock band. Cpl fun facts: Jimi Hendrix was a big fan of Bill Gibbons' guitar playing and that is something. Everyone told them if they wanna make it in the music industry they have to go to New York. To which they said " no, we are staying right here in Houston". They became really popular in the 80s with the introduction of the Car, storytelling videos and the Album ELIMINATOR. To hear their more blues and raw stuff, check out " Tush" as many mentioned, and " Jesus just left Chicago". Love, love your reactions. And mostly your commentary instead of just watching. Keep up the great entertainement.
At this time , ZZ Top were headlining at Donington Monsters of Rock in UK , a sunny Sunday evening , drinking scrumpy cider with some Hells Angels ( no idea ) , they flew the Eliminator hot Rod about 200 ft above the crowd , slung under a chinook helicopter. Those were the days !
My first concert was Journey at 17 and my second at 18 was ZZ Top. Two of the BEST concerts ever. ZZ Top played for a really long time, more than anyone else I saw.
This is how a ragged trio of Texans conquered MTV during the synth pop period; great music and great videos. Unlike a lot of hard-core ZZ top fans, I love their 80's stuff. You still have to listen to La Grange, Jesus Just Left Chicago, or Blue Jean Blues to hear their true genius. Gotsta get paid is also as cool as it gets. They teamed up with Rick Rubin and did a song based on the 90's rap song "25 lighters". I don't know the song because the only rap I really do is rap/jazz fusion; Digable Planets, or Us3.
Loudest concert I ever attended...ZZ Top 1990 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento. OMG. My ears are still ringing to this day. Amazing how much sound 3 guys can make...
The name (Zig Zags and Tops rolling papers) is an urban (suburban?) legend. Reverend Billy himself said it was named after their hero of the Blues ZZ Hill. ZZ Top is probably my all-time favorite band. They got funk, soul, the controlled chaos of distorted guitars and pinched harmonics-sublime. And that red ‘34 Ford was in many of my fantasies as a teenager lol
This band was one of those that used a video outlet, MTV, to strengthen its career. The 70s were massive enough for ZZ, Top with hits like Tush, La Grange and Jesus just Left Chicago. The 1983 LP Eliminator put the boys from Texas at a whole 'nother level. Besides Legs there was three other mammoth hits off here: Gimme All Your Lovin, Rough Boy and the ultra huge Sharp Dressed Man.
ZZ Top is just one of those bands that just keep making hit after hit through out all the years. Also, fun fact Jimmi Hendrick rated guitarist Billy Gibbons as one of the greatest guitarist of all time.
Yes, girls do love this song. I love all of their songs, especially the earlier stuff from the 70s, into the early 80s. I love Legs, too, from ‘84 or ‘85. I was going to g into 12th grade. They are awesome. That Lil’ Lo Band from Texas.
Saw them 3x's. The Recycler tour with the stage made to look like a junkyard was fuckin awesome and my fave of the 3. 1990. One of the greatest 3 piece bands to ever do it. RIP Dusty 🤘😎
RIP Dusty Hill, ZZ Top's bass player for 50 years, and RIP Kimberly Herrin, the actress and Playboy Playmate in the red top, who just recently died of cancer. She had roles in movies such as Romancing The Stone and Ghostbusters. The other two women are French model Danièle Arnaud and "Real Housewives" Jeana Keough, former Playmate and formerly married to Oakland A's pitcher Matt Keough. The "make-over girl" is Wendy Frazier. ZZ Top was heavily influenced by Mississippi delta blues from the 1930s and 40s, but played in a boogie-rock style. They had their first major success in the 1970s, but their success began to fade with the rise of Disco in the late 70s, but their Eliminator album - using then-new tech of drum machines and synths, and largely written by guitarist Billy Gibbons in the studio along with the engineer - was a breakthrough, and their innovative early MTV videos were massive hits and caused a decade of resurgence for the band, with their albums Eliminator, Afterburner, and Recycler all being top 5 albums in the 1980s. You really should check out some of their pre-video-era hits. Songs like their signature song "La Grange" (written about the famous "Chicken Ranch" brothel in La Grange, Texas, which also inspired the Broadway musical and subsequent movie "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas'), "Tush", and the funk/blues 1-2 punch of "Waitin' For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago" (these two songs are always played together). Other favorites are "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" and their cover of "Dust My Broom", both from the universally great Deguello album. If you like blues-rock, often with some added funk, you'll never go wrong with ZZ Top.
ZZ Top was on the bill for a free military concert at Camp Pendleton. My platoon got tasked with setting up the stage, sound, lights, etc. for the promoter. We all got crew passes, and were able to hang out wherever we wanted before, and during the concert. I gave one to my wife, who loves ZZ Top. She got her own personal concert! She was chilling in front of the stage when they came out to do their sound checks, but hey ran through heir whole set. Later, she ran into Billy in the green room area, and got his autograph and a bunch of pictures with him. It was her first concert, and will probably be her best.
ZZ Top has been around for a long time. They were the king of cool and a three man band. The eliminator car the old Ford is awesome and iconic and I do believe that was their wives in the video. RIP Dusty Hill
If you haven’t done their song La Grange yet… it’s gotta be next! 🙏🏼 It’s a vibe & we used to put it on in my 1st apartment & dance around w/ all the friends! 😂 It’s a GREAT one!! ❤
ZZ Top's 80's stuff is straight fire (as were the 80's in general), they were a band made for MTV. I strongly urge you to check out some of their mostly older heavily blues influenced songs like Waitin for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago, Blue Jean Blues, My Head's in Mississippi. They have an amazing catalog and I think you'll like the different personality of these tracks. Oh yeah, can't forget Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers!
I remain a ZZ Top fan, and it was so exciting to hear about and see these new videos when they came out. Every teen stayed up late for the only video show there was back then, Friday Night Videos, to see the new videos for the new songs that we were hearing on the radio. MTV was a thing too, but where I lived we didn't have cable, so there were just 4 different channels to watch unless you were rich and had one of those giant satellite dishes.
Yo, BP! Always great content! On that note, I grew up in the 80s & 90s circa '78. As you grew up a hip-hop head,. I grew up listening to just about everything rock/metal since the 1950s on up. Most of your reactions are childhood memories of mine when the songs came out if not then shortly after. Seeing people of different ethnicities, social & economical circles vibing over the same music I grew up with kicks A$$! Rock/Metal in all it's forms belongs to all peoples! God Bless & Much Success!
Something you would probably like - ZZ Top covering a rap artist! They shared studio space with the rapper Z-Ro here in Houston, liked his "25 Lighters", and did it up as a ZZ song in "I Gotsta Get Paid". Awesome song, with a slammin video.
I’m 70 in a couple of days. When I was 17 in 1971 I bought my first car and drove into town like a king. As I crested the hill into my UK working class northern town. Z Z Top Boogie came on the analogue radio. I’d never heard them before… it was about 1971… My mind was suitably blown.
The guitar player, Billy Gibbons, toured with Jimi Hendrix in 1968 and they became good friends, Hendrix loved his playing and legend has it that Jimi said in an interview Billy was his favorite guitar player. And at the time Billy was just a teen from Texas.
Back in high school I had a 1985 GMC S15 with a 350 in it, also a decent stereo. Believe it or not the ZZ Top greatest hits cd back then had good base. They have a lot of legit songs.
I used to live next door to the base player for ZZ Top dusty Hill, The original name of the band was moving sit was a 5 piece band and they cut it down to 3 members, Right out of Pasadena Texas
Ironically the drummer Frank beard is the only member that didn't have a beard, Gillette razors offered a million dollars a piece if they use their razors to shave and they refused
ZZ Top was the longest-running rock band with only its original members. Small wonder! You should check out the video documentary "That Little Ol' Rock Band From Texas" to get a good look at where they came from and how they got to the top. They played that "shuffle" sound for all it was worth: hard, fast, and lots of fun.
I went to my first ever concert when I was 16. It was a ZZ Top/Doobie Bros concert. I didn't know either band, but left a fan of both! The music was amazing! What the guys do in this video, spinning their guitars at the same time and such, they did live as well. It's a concert that set the bar high for all concerts after that! (RIP Dusty!)
I really respect your decision to do spontaneous videos. There are so many channels now that only do paid ones. Thanks so much for being random & eclectic!
Now go back and watch Back to the Future III and pay attention to the band at the town party. Watch them spin their guitars, just like this video. When it came out, it was super cool to see them in the movie. We knew they did Doubleback but we didn’t know they would be in the movie.
I saw ZZ Top in concert after Dusty died. He's the lead on legs. As tribute they used his vocals from his last show while they played. Fantastic concert
R.I.P. Dusty Hill

I Need You Tonight by ZZ Top awesome drumming in this song 🔥😎
ZZ Top has been around for a long time. They were the king of cool and a three man band. The eliminator car the old Ford is awesome and iconic and I do believe that was their wives in the video. RIP Dusty Hill
1971 was their first album
Gotta love the MTV Generation! The coolest thing about this video was ZZ Top!❤❤
If you haven’t done their song La Grange yet… it’s gotta be next! 🙏🏼 It’s a vibe & we used to put it on in my 1st apartment & dance around w/ all the friends! 😂 It’s a GREAT one!! ❤
I second this request!! 🙌🙏
I was lucky enough to get to see ZZ Top years ago. Cincinnati Ohio! They were the king of cool 😎
Saw your face light up when the girls 1st got out the car! Us 80's chicks knew how dress!
Aqua Net to the rescue
These guys are the real deal when it comes to rock and roll. They are INCREDIBLE!
Ironic how the only member of the band that don’t have a beard is the drummer and his last name is Beard.
I was a Sr in high school when this album came out. ZZ Top videos fueled many a teenage boy's dreams.
Saw them 3 yrs ago at our State Fair... they rocked it still.
OMG, you've got ZZ'itis!! The only treatment is MORE ZZ Top. That rabbit hole is medicine for the soul...
ZZ Top Blue jean blues...gotta hear it. And Kiss Unplugged "I still love you"...great videos!
I had the pleasure of going to see ZZ Top live a couple of years ago in Manchester, it was ELECTRIC. Nothing better than hearing them live.
80's music videos were the best!
I had that key chain! I made it into an earring! Sucker was heavy!
I always get the craving to hear their old announcer anouncing That Little Ol' Band From Texas.
Love, love, love ZZ Top!
Tina Turner also did this song regularly as part of her legendary live shows ,she loved the song
Oh, everyone made a beeline for the dancefloor when this track came on, back in the 80's! LOVED IT!!
Saw them in concert great guitarists
Amazing how THREE guys create this incredible sound
Closing your eyes to listen is what made music on radio so phkn good 😂
I went to my first ever concert when I was 16.
Texas never disappoints when it comes to blues/rock bands.
I saw ZZ Top in concert after Dusty died. He's the lead on legs. As tribute they used his vocals from his last show while they played.
Fantastic concert
I went to a ZZ Top/Skynyrd show a couple of months ago, and Gibbons is just the most effortlessly cool dude you could imagine.
