I had planned for some time to walk the 20 miles of dry, part-watered and watered section of the Lancaster Canal, from Kendal down to Carnforth.
The day was excessively hot as had been previous days, so I opted to cycle instead as I didn't think I'd complete the route in the time I'd alloted myself.
As it happened, the first 7 miles wasn't cycle friendly at all despite much literature claiming it was, so much like an obstacle course.
I lost much time having to detour to buy drinking water and also through re-tracing my steps as the route signage was lost in undergrowth at times and thus was missed.
I managed a pint in the Crooklands Hotel - Crooklands, the Smithy Inn - Holme, Longlands - Tewitfield and the Canal Turn - Carnforth.

in 1971 I had the great experience of going through Hincaster tunnel in a glass fibre Dinghy ,I touched ropes on the side of the tunnel that turned to powder in my hands. I understand I and my two pals were the first persons to go through the tunnel since 1942 when the area was cut of. The tunnel is a work of art and should be grade listed , when you think there is no maintenance still standing for very nearly 200 years that's not bad.

      Cool.
That must have been a great experience? I'm planning on canoeing through an old canal tunnel I came across exploring the old and long gone Leominster Canal in Herefordshire.................. It is viewable in my video 'Leominster Canal Exploration Pt 1, 6 mins 40 secs in.............Obviously times are different now, but that would have made a great video clip, paddling through the Hincaster Tunnel.
Brilliant comment that mate. Thanks for sharing it. :)
