100km WALK in 24 HOURS
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 10. 12. 2020
- A very tough overnight distance challenge walk.
đ· INSTA: / josephxkendrick
I've wanted to complete a 24-hour walking distance challenge for many years now. Previously, I had set myself the goal of 100 miles and went for it on the longest night of the year. Unsurprisingly, I failed at around 30 miles / 50km and of course that mileage seemed ridiculous in hindsight, especially for a non-runner.
A few years later, I find myself inspired to give it another shot. This time lowering the target to 100km / 62 miles. I wasn't intending to run a single step of it. I also decided to use the local canals which offered the perfect conditions of being traffic-free, having easy directions and almost zero hills. Although, the unique aspect of this attempt would be that I'd carry everything I'd need from the very start. This means I would be completely independent and I'd need no outside assistance whatsoever. This was to bolster my self-sufficiency mindset, but also somewhat due to the current pandemic lockdown the world is facing.
Upon leaving the house, my backpack was weighing it at around 17kg / 38lbs filled with food, drink, electronics, clothing and other supplies. My shoulders definitely felt it but I had been training with some walks with weights in my bag so it wasn't a total shock. The positive aspect to this was that it could only get lighter as the event progressed. Something my back and feet would be very thankful for as the pain steadily increased.
Setting off at 1pm, I immediately tucked into some of the junk food I had with me. Crisps are annoying to carry so I got rid of them first. A handy bin relieved me of about 10 grams of packaging weight. This was technically my breakfast as I had stayed up late and snoozed as much as I could. This is to bring the night hours closer to the start of the walk which in theory makes the lack of stimulating sunlight, and the tiredness that brings with it, easier to handle.
I spent the first hour listening to rather trippy ambient music. Strangely setting the tone for what would be a very tough quest - both physically and psychologically. I knew it was going to be hard work, and I know never to underestimate these things, but I was in for a ride.

I'm Joseph Kendrick and I create videos about challenging myself. I love to push my limit with cycling and hiking. I have circumnavigated Australia on a fixed gear bicycle solo & unsupported as well as being the first person to complete an Everesting attempt on a fixie, riding multiple 24-hour time trials, Everesting on a road bike, cycling the USA west coast, bike touring through The Alps, finishing the South Downs Way and Hadrian's Wall hikes both in four days each among others. I use my channel to share these adventures with the world to inspire others and also as motivation to raise my expectations of myself and generate more ambition. I am constantly dreaming up the next big idea - from walking across countries, to cycling to extreme points and competing in ultracycling bikepacking races - so stay tuned to see what I come up with next.

Awesome effort mate. Mustâve been torture at the late stages.
I'm going to do this upcoming sunday so watching your video to get some tips and tricks!

Hello Joseph, good to see you. Feel like I walk 100km another time with you.

Thanks for this!
Great effort bro, well done đ«Ą
Dude you are unstoppable
Congrats to get the 100k done. And from personal experience I can tell itÂŽs harder to make it in 24hrs than in 20hrs or less.
Finally itÂŽs the time on the trail which is killing the mind and the joints.
My longest hike was a 26hrs solo with 120km. Trying to beat myself failed. So far.
Curious, if you will try it again. Subscibed.
Yeah, pushing to the 24 hours is brutal. Last winter I did a thirty-one hour bike ride (no sleep) and the Goggins Challenge. Now I'm thinking about doing another attempt this winter - maybe actually use shops along the way this time so I don't have to carry as much weight. 26 hours for 120km is insane bro.
Just discovered your channel recently. Saw your last post on Strava, hope your recovery is going well. Sending you my best wishes.
What happened to him?
@@simonstal8800 he had an accident towards the end of 2020 on some ice. His friend jack has confirmed heâs still doing alright.
Wow really interesting challenges man! Congrats on the 100 km!
What motivates you to do these things? And how do you keep you mind calm/busy on a trip like that? When I'm doing solo trips I sometimes have a hard time "entertaining" myself, like, what to think about, and how to keep calm and not worry about whatever.
Inspiring
I hope you are okay. I just discovered your delivery videos yesterday and realised you stopped posting on all social media in December after your IG post. đđœ

Hope he is okay. If he is then it's kind of a dick move to leave all his fans in the dark like this.
That's definitely a success! Your goal was to see how far you could go in 24 hours. You covered 100km (with a 3.5 hour break at the end)
Yep! Tbh, my legs were so restless in bed that I was basically still walking

I got a 100km walk in a couple months and been training in my hoka runners. What would you recommend for this distance as Iâm not sure they can hold up due to getting blisters already. Thanks and great video!
You need the right socks too. Try a pair of toe glove socks under a decent pair of walking socks
The longest Iâve ever purposely walked was about 3 1/2 to 4 hours. At least that I can remember. This is nuts man but I very much enjoyed watching it. It is inspiring and it makes me want to do maybe an eight hour walk. I know my feet would be dead afterwards.
I built up to this with a 10km, half-marathon (21km) and marathon (42km) walk in the weeks leading up to it just so my legs (and mind) had some sort of adaptation and warm-up haha! You could probably get a marathon done in about 8 hours!
@@josephxkendrick I could... but would my wife let me be alone that long while she watches my 1 year old son? Thatâs the real question đ€Ș
@@Clarkfamilyorchards the longest ive done was 2.5 hours and i thought that was impressive lol. 17 mins/mile too
Iâm gona have a crack at this. Iâm doing a 1200 km walk from Brisbane to Sydney right now and this looks like my next challenge
Watched this just before turning into your stream. Nice vid. Shame you didnt complete then 24 hours. If my wife was there spurring you on with a loudspeaker, you would have done 48 hours! đđ
What that speaker do
Hey Mate how are you going these days I heard you got an injury? Psychologically can be hard when it takes away what we love hey
You inspire me to hike
That's awesome. Enjoy!
Inspired, I might try it đłđ€Ł
đ
You are a bad ass ! Whatâs up with those canal boats ? Do people live on them ?
Yeah! People live in them, I think they have to move a certain distance every few weeks. Quite a different way of life. Know a few people who do it. Quite fun!
thanks for this.... im about to do a 24hr challange tonight at midnight... wish me luck ill be a little more prepared so im hoping my feet can handle it....
Big! Have done a fasted walk, would be nice to see how far you can walk in 24hrs fasted - less to carry!
I actually did a half-marathon walk in preparation for this 24 hours fasted! Broke my fast when I got home. Took about 4 hours.
Thatâs a right stomp fasted. Keep up the good work, looking forward to whateverâs next
I have my fourth ultra challenge trek coming up from London to Brighton, Iâm hoping the weather will be good. I find mental strength takes over the last 20 miles, I must be crazy x
Heck yeah! Good luck. It's almost 100% mind over matter with ultra.
Where you at bro?
Well done on the challenge. Did you change your shoes or socks during this?
Nope! Kept them on the whole time! Didn't want to even dare take the shoes off because then just invites more pain, I find haha! Just kept moving!!
@@josephxkendrick I heard 1000 mile socks are good. I haven't tried them myself.
I'm walking 100k on the south coast September 3rd. Only walked marathons so far and its tough. Fairplay to you.
That'll be beautiful!
Just discovered your vlog. I used to walk long distance when I was working in the city. What brand of shoes are you using? Are you using a running trail shoes?
I think I used a hiking boot for this so mud and puddles wouldn't mess my feet up. Did some training and a lot of hiking with Altra shoes though.
Can I give you a code for my weward??
One of the worst things you can do when walking long distances is not taking breaks. It's a common rookie mistake. In the military they take 5-10 min break every hour, at first that might seem unnecessary, but believe you me, when you walk 100-150-200 km, those breaks really adds up. Its about giving the body rest, before it's completely worn out.
It's also very helpful to lie down and elevate your legs.
THe 100 km is definitely impressive, big congrats :)
It's best not to stop for breaks to be honest . Once you stop that's when you start getting pains and stiffness . If you do need to stop make it less than 30 seconds if possible . I have done several 24 hr walks . Last wk I did the Hadrian wall path
Hey! Im preparing for the same challange and I was wondering, could you give me some advice, something you wish youâd known before the walk? I would be very grateful! :)
ive done 84km in a day my advice is book a motel halfway in and have a nice shower and relax for abit
Thank you for taking us with your walks, while others just talk and talk and talk and talk..
Hey Joe any news? where are you bud?
where are the new videos boss?
Have you considered long distance hiking? Like the Appalachian trail or the Te Araroa?
Yeah! The PCT looks incredible!
@@josephxkendrick I did the PCT last year and couldnât recommend it enough!
Hi , great effort!
Iâve ran 24 hours 10 years ago, but now aged 62 Iâm planning a 24 hour walk next month, what was your daily / weekly average step count leading up to this ?
Did it ! 50 miles/24 hours đ
Not sure about step count but I slowly worked-up with some weighted fast walks. Built up to a double-marathon distance before attempting this over the course of 6 months or so. Hope it went well for you again!
For anyone else that wants to do this or maybe a bit shorter: Pack light. Pack water. Pack snacks (bars/chocolate not coke). That's it. Starting out with 16 kg is overkill to say the least. without not counting water you should not carry more than 1kg.
You should ride the same route on your bike and see how much faster you can do it.
I'm planning to do 100 km in 2 days and then continue walking 20-30km a day with a 6,5 kg knapsack. Any thoughts?
What is knapsack?
Damnnnnn! You looked freakin WRECKED at the end of that 100km! :D Fuckin AWESOME!! :D
Yep!!!! Hahaha
Dear Joseph I think is about time you start posting content on CZcams again.
With a few walking partners every couple of hours you'd have done the 24 without realising
Yeah, solo definitely makes the time go by in a rougher way if you're not fabulous!
@@josephxkendrick for sure, good boots will help the pain as well. I did 36 hours with three friends a few years ago with good boots and it's exhausting, but fun with other people.

Goooooooooooo go go!!!

Probs good idea you didn't do the full 24 h don't wanna do perm damage.
You need some hills next time. The Lakes or maybe Hadrian's Wall.
Lots more hills, Everesting-walk next?
Ha! I was explicitly trying to avoid hills. Every little bridge I went across felt like Mount Everest!!!
I've actually done Hadrian's Wall in 4 days (marathon distance a day). Videos from that are on my channel somewhere!
Im bou to do it to today, cheers from isreal
Nice! Good luck. Leave a reply with how you go! GO GO GO!!!
Joseph! We need new videos bud!
I think the Australia videos are mythical
I did this a couple of months ago, I gradually worked my way up each weekend before going from 50,60,70 then finally just did the 100km in about 21 hrs. I did massive loops and came back home to eat, didnât have any weight on me, felt like a bit of a zombie at night, completely zoned out haha
Heck yeah dude, that sounds awesome. I did a few marathon and a double-marathon distances as prep for this too. Thinking about doing another 100km+ in 24 hours again this year... maybe less weight and use the shops along the way. Walking in the dead of night has a beautiful peacefulness to it - even if you're pushing yourself hard.
Nice video â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžđ

Thanks for the Sub! Love your channel, I've only ever done one walking challenge before (100km) in two days and I was DESTROYED after haha so I can only imagine how difficult doing it in 1 day would be đ

in 2 days im going to walk 24 hours non-stop too, my goal is 200km in one day
That's not possible. You cannot walk 8.3 km an hours for 24 hours straight without breaks, and if you want breaks, you have to walk 9 km an hour.
