On the road with Riley Baugus- playing old time music, listening to Motorhead and eating pork rinds. Riley built both instruments in the video. Eli Hetko is tour managing and shot the video.
We did this song for the movie Cold Mountain, me singing for actor Brendan Gleeson and Riley singing for Ethan Suplee in one of the most tense moments in the movie, they start singing. If you saw it at a theater and were annoyed at the people laughing in the back, they were probably friends of ours cracking up to hear our voices coming out of their heads.

I wish, I wish my baby was born
And sittin' on its papa's knee
And me, poor girl, and me, poor girl,
    were dead and gone
And the green grass growin' o'er my feet
I ain't ahead, nor never will be
    'Till the sweet apple grows
On a the sour apple tree
But still I hope, but still I hope
    the time will come
When you and I shall be as one
The owl, the owl is a lonely bird
It chills my heart with dread and terror
That someone's blood, that someone’s blood
    There on his wings
    That someone's blood
    There on his feathers
I wish, I wish my love had died
Send her soul to wander free
And we might meet where ravens fly
Let our poor bodies rest in peace

I meant just that we recorded it for the film. The first two verse are, indeed, old, while the last two were made up by our dear departed friend Anthony Minghella. Riley and I both thought they were kind of lame at first, but came around to appreciating Anthony's poetic take on things. (I think I can speak for Riley on that, but you should ask him as he surely has his own take on it.)

my life has been, as I'm sure it has for many, one long musical journey. as I go along I always discover something new, after all the years. it started with what was on the radio, and I swore off music completely. but when I was about 4 or 5, I was turned onto 90s grunge by my brother, and classic rock by my parents and their friends, and I realized what music was about. the next 20 years were discoveries mostly within those genres or stemming from them, but a few years ago I was introduced to folk music, which led to anarcho folk punk, back to folk, and finally to whatever you call this strange form of perfection. life has been different for me, not altogether good or bad. not easy. In all the music I listened to, I related to some extent but always felt there was this thin veil, this small bit of a lack of understanding between myself and the words I was hearing. there was one emotion that was missing that I still don't have a word for. but I found it when I stumbled upon these tunes. Appalachian music? mountain music? the name doesn't matter for me. as far as I am concerned my musical journey was meant to lead me here. and I'm grateful for it.
