I loved that last episode of forced shunning.
The utter irony was that the main character was a selfish jerk, but when he comes out of his punishment, he reaches out in kindness to a woman who is also ‘invisible’.
So he’ll serve his time again, simply for being a decent human being.

@@FeverDreamlandTheater So No Her Pilgrim Soul for you anywhere? I have Nightcrawlers at 1, Her Pilgrim Soul 2, probably To See The Invisible Man at 3. I loved the irony of the ending of that one. The fact that him being more caring and acknowledging someone deemed invisible risked him being sentenced to more time being invisible.

It's my fave from the 80s series too. One of the greatest sci-fi love stories ever told. Especially because it is about other, non-romantic forms of love, which is criminally rare. Makes me cry everytime I watch it.

I recently watched it over again first time with newer perspective and watching with intent. There were very clever reimaginings some remakes, the best was dead women's shoes which I think was actually an improvement on the original. I think they should've done a continuation with klugman losing to a new up and comer or else winning as the ending is a reverse of fates this time around. Episodes about b movie horror, and space were very fitting at the time. Some of my faves dropped a bit and some turned me around on them and were elevated.

Just one other episode that always stuck with me was the one about the demonic Grandma if I recall correctly who is taken care of by her grandson played by the same child actor from the Never Ending Story I think.
The fear I had for the grandmother built up over the entire episode until they finally showed her towards the end with an effective practical creature. It must have been effective to still be with me decades later.

"Profile In Silver" was one of my favorite episodes too. I also remember an episode (don't remember the name) where some astronauts landed on a dead star. They figured out that it was the actual Star that led the Magi in the Bible. Also another favorite (again I don't remember the name of the episode) was where a couple was pulled out of time and they found "elves' (probably not the right term) that were responsible for creating every moment of time we experience. Finally there was an episode where a man found himself in a world very much like his own but the language was different. At the end he got out a Primer and started learning the language from scratch. These might have been in a 90s version of The Twilight Zone though.

The last one you noted is definitely 'Wordplay', which was another good one from the 80s series.

@@FeverDreamlandTheater Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate the titles of those episodes. Definitely my favorites of that 80s series. I also remember one where a woman went back in time and became the nanny of Adolph Hitler. She was torn with killing the baby, thus stopping WW2 and not taking an innocent life. She and the baby died (drowned I believe) but the Hitlers found a homeless baby (mother was dead in a gutter) and they took the baby as their own. THAT baby became the Adolph Hitler of our history.

I liked the one where Colleen Dewhurst was the author of children's stories who felt obsolete. It had the same sweet vibe of "a Changing of the Guard", from TOS. The latter featured Donald Pleasance as an academy teacher also feeling obsolete after being nudged into retirement. Both of these gave happy tears and chills.
A special mention of Meg Foster's sad, heartbreaking performance in "the Picnic" [ I BELIEVE that was the title, anyway...]

A good list from one of the better revisits to the 5th Dimension, but I could be biased cause I watched this one before the original as a little kid back when it aired.
I know The Twilight Zone is kind of your bread and butter here but I'm curious if you've checked iut similar shows?
    Tales From The Crypt
    Creepshow
    Tales From The Darkside
    Night Gallery
Amazing Stories (Go To The Head of The Class is just superb)
Heck I'm even tempted to encourage you to check out The Storyteller by Jim Henson.
And while it's not exactly an anthology series Nightmare Cafe by Wes Craven is an interesting watch if you can find it.

I only saw one Amazing Stories and that was the WW2 one starting Kevin Costner and a few others, where a crippled fighter has to land, but one of the crew is trapped in the gunner's bubble at the base of the plane and the landing gear is broken (so the plane must land on its belly, which would deliberately kill the trapped man).
      A miraculous twist ending too.

@@FeverDreamlandTheater Nightmare Cafe was neat. It had the guy who played Freddy Kruger as a kind of narrator dude. The show was more about these two people who are "employed" by the cafe which is actually a living entity that appears to people who are struggling with the things they've done in their lives.
Sort of a Silent Hill meets Waffle House.

    An excellent selection.
I think my two favorites are: “Dead Run” and “The Devil’s Alphabet”.
Dead Run follows a young truck driver who is blackballed from commercial trucking because of too many accidents (insurance companies won’t touch him) so he goes to his father’s friend for help. The job? Carting souls to Hell. It’s a haunting and yet touching look into the themes of rigidity, morality, sinfulness and redemption.
The Devil’s Alphabet on the other hand is a period piece involving 7 members of a college fraternity who swear to not only continue meeting but get together every year even after death. One of the members commits suicide and the survivors come to realize that their oaths are still binding. It’s a spooky ghost story combined with a cautionary tale and will leave you haunted.
Fun fact: The Devil’s Alphabet is based on a short story (The Everlasting Club) by Sir Arthur Gray, a contemporary of MR James, who is credited as the father of the modern day ghost story.

@@FeverDreamlandTheater I was able to find it on (I think) Project Gutenberg.
A little heads up though, I liked the story but there’s an important part of it that requires a familiarity with Latin (although I had someone who told me what it meant) and a lot of it is left up to the reader’s interpretation, which isn’t a bad way to go but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

  • @kali3665

80s Zone is better than it's often given credit for. Certainly better than the 2001 and 2022 series. It's hard for me to choose the best of the 80s series, but you touched most of them. I do have an issue with Dealer's Choice - they explain how to play Lowball as if we're children and there's too much dialogue - but the episode itself is classic. Dan Hedaya is perfect as Nick, but the entire cast is wonderful.
Nick: Norman's out visiting a sick uncle. [checks his watch] 'scuse me - make that a dead uncle.
A Little Peace and Quiet is kinda 80s Zone's version of A Kind of a Stopwatch, and it's SO much better. We actually cares what happens to Penny, and no one cares about McNulty in the original. Nice little gag at the end of the episode.
About the only flaw I have with To See the Invisible Man is that the Mark of Invisibility looks ridiculous, IMO. Other than that, the special effects are cheap, but effective - especially the watcher droids. Cotter Smith starts out very obnoxious, but as the punishment begins to take its toll, you really start to feel for him. He learns his lesson and the story works - it's a classic second chance story, and, in many ways, that's what the Twilight Zone is all about.
Very good take on these classics. I am looking forward to your reviews of the individual episodes.

It was called "The New Twilight Zone," by the way ~~~~
A memorable early episode starred Robert Klein. His use of language starts to erode --- Over the course of a few days, all the words he uses, (and the audience understands,) now have different meanings to everyone around him. In the end he must start from scratch to learn to communicate. Disorientation, isolation, and (slow) recovery. Touching, and relatable.

"To See the Invisible Man" is probably #2 on my personal list. My #1 is "The Cold Equations", which is for my money the best version of this particular story, though the comic precursor, "A Weighty Decision", is also very good. The pilot of an emergency dispatch spaceship carrying medicine needed to treat a disease outbreak on a distant colony discovers he has an extra passenger: a 14-year-old girl who stowed away to visit her brother.
I also like "Button, Button" a lot; it changes the ending from the Richard Matheson short story, and in the process improves it quite a bit. The original ending depends on some not so clever wordplay, while the Twilight Zone version changes it to be a logical, if horrifying, extension of the premise.
