In January of 2020, SmartPakers took a trip to Aiken, South Carolina to meet up with Team SmartPak Rider Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg, aka “Thomas”. The pair was coming off an incredible competition year in 2019 and is determined to carry on that momentum. While Thomas wasn’t everyone’s first choice when he arrived at Boyd’s to ride, the “little fuzzy pony” knew he had something to prove.
Horses with Heart is the second story in a new SmartPak video series, bringing you into the barns of unique horses - from therapy horses to the underdog turned Olympic hopeful - showing how they’ve made an impact on the lives of their riders, and why we at SmartPak continue supporting these horses and riders through their journey.

Thomas is once in a life time horse. I know I got to take care of one myself. I am crying like a baby. This is the best ever. Proud of you all.
So good! I'm not crying, you're crying!
This is such an amazing video! Boyd and Thomas are one of my absolute favorite pairs to watch! I sadly haven’t had the chance to meet Boyd yet, but I hope to meet him at some point and do a few clinics with him because he is one of my biggest riding inspirations! I am a 12 (almost 13) year old eventer running Novice with my Quarter Horse mare, Lena. When I first got her, I would have never expected us to move up to Novice within the first year of us being a pair. When I purchased Lena, our future of competing in eventing didn’t look promising, and I don’t think many people thought we would get this far, but after our first show (in which we got eliminated and didn’t get to finish) I was determined to win (i didn’t know this at the time but our first show was lenas first show which i found that out recently). I put in the work and fast forward a few months, we placed 3rd in our second show, fast forward some more and we were consistently placing top 5 every show! Then, unfortunately this year we had a pretty bad experience when we left our barn and Lena had a month of stall rest to put weight on because she wasn’t being fed properly and was malnourished. We recently started showing again and won our first BN back then got 6th at our 1st Novice back in a competitive division. We are trying to qualify for AECs 2023, and although it isn’t looking promising, if we don’t qualify that just means i will need to put in more work to get better to qualify for AECs 2024 and this video just motivates me to do so, so we may have a chance of qualifying for AECs 2023 🤞🏼🍀
